Match Group to Acquire Hyperconnect for $1.7B

Matchgroup hyperconnectPR NEWSWIRE – Feb 10 – Match Group is acquiring Hyperconnect for $1.725B in cash and stock. The transaction is expected to close in Q2 2021 pending customary regulatory approvals. Hyperconnect is a leading social discovery and video technology company based in Seoul, South Korea that operates Azar and Hakuna Live. Azar is the highest grossing 1-on-1 live video and audio chat app globally, allowing users to connect with others from around the world, instantly translating voice and text. Since launch in 2014, Azar has tallied 540M downloads. Hakuna Live is an interactive, social live streaming app that enables group video and audio broadcasts with various features including virtual gifting, AR powered avatars, profile enhancements, and communities built around shared interests. Since launch in 2019, Hakuna Live has been downloaded ~23M times with strong momentum in South Korea and Japan. Hyperconnect is profitable and generated ~$200M in revenue in 2020, a 50% increase from 2019.

Dating Apps Made $3B in 2020, Tinder Tops Spending List

Dating app turnoffs surveyTHE HINDU – Feb 9 – Consumers across the globe spent ~$3B on dating apps in 2020, up 15% YOY, according to App Annie. Tinder secured the top position in terms of consumer spending worldwide, while Bumble and Pairs took the second and third spot. Dating apps witnessed a total of 560M downloads over the year. Tinder was the top ranking app in India and the U.S., having the highest annual overall consumer spend among non-gaming apps in 2020. It also ranked in the top 10 in both China and South Korea.

Tinder Partners With Deliveroo for Valentine’s Matchmaking Service

TinderdeliverooCAMPAIGN.CO.UK – Feb 9 – Tinder has partnered Deliveroo for a Valentine's dating service that prints the profiles of local singles on food deliveries. The initiative comes after Tinder reported an 84% increase year on year in user bios featuring the word "takeaway". When ordering from one of five Wingstop restaurants on Deliveroo, customers will be able to opt-in to the "DeliverDate" service, meaning their delivery will arrive with QR codes for Tinder profiles of six people printed on the box. 1K profile boxes will be available on orders from Wingstop restaurants in the London areas of Battersea, Kentish Town, Gloucester Road and Croydon, as well as in Birmingham, on 13 and 14 February. Thirty singles are being featured across the whole campaign.

Video datingVANCOUVER SUN – Feb 9 – "I think most of the stigma of meeting online really is gone," says Justin McLeod, the founder and CEO of Hinge, during a virtual conference. "Meeting through an app is the number-one way that people are meeting their partners." The pandemic is certainly helping to accelerate that percentage, and now users are finding a new way to get acquainted with potential partners: video dates. 81% of users who try video dates reported the experience was "not at all awkward", and a third of people say that they are open to dating someone exclusively who they've only met on video dating. Another benefit to the video dating boom, experts say, is that ghosting is down by ~20%.

The app has achieved certification for its Information Security Management System (ISMS) under the ISO/IEC 27001:2013 standard following an extensive impartial external audit. Virtual Dating Could Save UK Singles £3K a Year

Virtual dating pic1YAHOO SPORTS – Feb 8 – According to research by Ocean Finance, dating under lockdown has on average saved singletons up to £3,224 ($4,442). Ocean Finance also found from a survey of 1K singles that almost 2/3 (64%) would prefer to date in-person – suggesting that money doesn't matter when it comes to finding love. The research also showed that only one in 12 (8%) would continue dating virtually when life is back to normal.
