The Tech Billionaire Who Is Putting Women First

Posted on April 8, 2021

Bumble whitney wolfe herd screenshotBBC – Apr 8 – The co-founder of dating app Bumble, Whitney Wolfe Herd, has joined Forbes list of the super-rich. The 31-year-old became the world's youngest self-made female billionaire when she took Bumble public in February. Before Bumble, she was among the founding team at Tinder but after tensions with other executives – one of whom she had been dating – she left. The central focus of her app is that only women can initiate a conversation in heterosexual matches. She founded Bumble with help from early investor Russian billionaire Andrey Adreev, who also had a stake in Badoo, both of which he sold in November 2019. Ms Wolfe Herd owns a 11.6% stake in Bumble, giving her an estimated net worth of $1.3B. She also heads Badoo. The two apps have a combined 40M users, 2.4M of whom pay a subscription.

David Minns – Niche Dating Is No Longer Niche Enough

Posted on April 7, 2021

LTR – Apr 7 – The challenges of marketing online dating sites in a saturated market motived the development of niche dating with services tailored for smaller user groups and specific demographics or interests. With the rising popularity of these sites, the more standard niches have become saturated. According to David Minns, the Niche Online Dating Man, niche dating is no longer niche enough. Even more unique and focused approaches are needed to build and market a new brand in the current market. He has built a network of 14 niche dating sites, including Lisa50, Butterfly, and Joystick. Minns discusses his methods for navigating the niche market in the latest video in the LTR Conference series.

LTR stands for Love, Technology, Relationships and the online conference covers the Internet dating and Online Social Communities space. It is for members of IDEA and OSCA.

The January LTR was kindly sponsored by RealMe, vPaaS by The Meet Group, Utopia Analytics, Tawkify, Real Gifts & Courtland Brooks.

How Tinder Created an Apocalyptic Love Story for Gen Z

Posted on April 7, 2021

Tinder swipenightTHE DRUM – Apr 7 – 'Swipe Night' is Tinder's dynamic choose-your-own-adventure style experience – full of twists, turns and a range of real-life moral dilemmas that matched users based on the way they played. The campaign, created by LA agency 72andSunny, was so well received that it ranked 6th in this year's World Creative Rankings. The team wanted to "make Tinder feel alive". The second goal was to provide users with the control they had been demanding. Finally, Tinder wanted to connect users in fun, new ways based on their preferences and tendencies. 'Swipe Night' was directed by 25-year-old filmmaker and actress Karena Evans, who made a name for herself directing music videos for the likes of Drake, Coldplay and SZA.

In the Age of Rising Cyberstalking, Dating Apps Fight Digital Abuse

Posted on April 7, 2021

No cyberstalking picTIMES OF INDIA – Apr 7 – According to Tinder, 38% of women report being bullied online, compared to 26% of men. 26% of women aged 18-24 reported being stalked and 25% reported being a target of online harassment. Bumble is releasing a safety guide, in partnership with Safecity, Red Dot Foundation's flagship public safety platform, to identify, prevent and combat digital abuse. The block and report feature has made it easy to block and report anyone who makes them uncomfortable. The photo verification feature helps prevent catfishing. The AI, Private Detector is able to capture, blur and alert users that they've been sent an unsolicited nude image. Tinder uses tools like automatic scans of profiles for red-flag language and images; manual reviews of suspicious profiles, activity, and user-generated reports; shadow-banning suspicious accounts; as well as blocking of email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses and other identifiers associated with bullying and harassment.
