Finding Love for $300K: Behind the Scenes of a Luxury Matchmaking Business

Posted on February 11, 2022

Kelleher International Amber Kelleher AndrewsLOS ANGELES TIMES – As co-CEO of Kelleher International, one of the country's largest matchmaking firms, Amber Kelleher-Andrews, 52, has been pairing off super-rich singles for more than half of her life. There is no minimum net worth required – being able to pay the $300K membership fee is proof enough – but clients must be serious about wanting long-term commitment. Kelleher-Andrews and her mother, Jill Kelleher, who founded the company in 1986, panicked at the start of COVID, fearing it meant the demise of their business. Times of crisis have often translated to an unexpected boom in business for the company. People are reevaluating. The majority of the firm's 800 inquiries a month come from online search traffic, and about a third from referrals. To make the cut, Kelleher-Andrews and her team probe a potential client's finances, education, marital status, dating history, family background and career trajectory, and conduct interviews to gauge commitment and charm. Fewer than 5% are accepted.

Bumble’s First Acquisition Raises 3 Red Flags

Posted on February 11, 2022

Fruitz and Bumble logosTHE MOTLEY FOOL – Bumble recently agreed to buy Fruitz, a French dating app that lets its users express their intentions with four fruit-based metaphors: cherries, grapes, watermelons, and peaches. On the surface, Bumble's acquisition makes sense. It only operates two main apps, Bumble and Badoo. However, the deal also raises three red flags about Bumble that can't be ignored.

  1. Bumble needed to buy more growth
Bumble ended Q3 of 2021 with 2.89M paying users across its two main apps, which represented 5% YOY growth. By comparison, Match's paying users rose 16% YOY to 16.3M.
  2. Fruitz probably won't add many paid users
Fruitz has been downloaded ~5.6M times globally for iOS and Android devices, according to Sensor Tower. And we don't know how many paid users it actually has.
  3. Selling Badoo makes more sense
Bumble generated more than twice as much average revenue per paying user than Badoo. Instead of acquiring another European-oriented app to offset Badoo's slowdown, it would have arguably made more sense to sell Badoo and reinvest that cash into Bumble's overseas expansion.

Tinder Introduces a Way for Members to Go on Virtual ‘Blind Dates’

Posted on February 11, 2022

Tinder Blind DateTECH CRUNCH – Tinder is bringing back the idea of the "blind date" through a new in-app feature, launching today. To use Blind Date, members will first answer a handful of icebreaker questions before being paired with someone else based on commonalities. They'll then enter a timed chat where they won't know any of the details about the person they're messaging, beyond their answers to the multiple-choice prompts. When the timer runs out, the two members can view each other's profile, then like it if they want to make a match and continue getting to know each other.

Bill Requires Dating Apps to Have Safety Warning

Posted on February 11, 2022

ParagrafFOX13 – A new bill introduced in the Utah State Legislature would require online dating sites to post a safety warning if they don't do background checks on customers. "Give a warning to people that they don't necessarily do background checks and just safety reminders to people," said Rep. Angela Romero, D-Salt Lake City, who is sponsoring House Bill 352. A pop up with a warning and safety tips, if they have users in Utah.
