Dating Is Broken. Going Retro Could Fix It.

Posted on September 30, 2022

MatchmakingNEW YORK TIMES – A slew of matchmaking companies and articles declare matchmaking is hot again. Netflix shows: "Indian Matchmaking," "Married at First Sight," "Bridgerton." In today's online world, burnout, opacity and callousness define dating. Options, filters and low barriers to engagement often don't translate to high-quality interactions.

[with matchmaking] a mediated match connects people who are looking for the same kind of relationship education, religion, values and may ease the difficulties of approach. Matchmakers add accountability.

Intermediation is best combined with another hallmark of traditional courtship: early, transparent communication about values and long-term goals. In practice [online dating filters] aren't used well. It's not uncommon to date for years without broaching the big questions about marriage and children. Sex tends to be embraced more quickly. A 2010 study (APA Journal of Family Psych) found that couples who waited until marriage to have sex reported less consideration of divorce and higher relationship satisfaction

Meeting someone through a 3rd party like a friend, parent or matchmaker, creates accountability that discourages bad behavior. They are mentors who can look at the matchmaking process "from an objective place". Many of us go on dates seeking the spark of chemistry and tumble into bed, or relationships, often without ever determining whether our prospective partners pass the most basic of compatibility tests.

Mark Brooks: The online personals industry needs to be more personal. Computers aren't quite enough for many people, who will pay for human guidance and encouragement. The critical services are pre and post-date feedback and careful, customized guidance and encouragement. I am backing matchmaker.com (in development) to help the dating industry connect with the matchmaking industry en masse.

Inner Circle Adds a Suite of Anti-ghosting Features

Posted on September 30, 2022

Inner Circle anti ghostingTECH CRUNCH – Inner Circle, a global dating app, is trying to put a stop to the hurtful online dating experience where people cut off contact with another person without any warning or explanation. Inner Circle dubbed this new group of features "The Date Conscious Suite." The new toolset includes things like anti-ghosting reminders, end conversation options, closure messages, pinned conversations, and decision prompts. Match Group announced a feature in 2021 that nudges users suspected of ghosting so the user can unmatch or send a message that they're not interested. Also, Hinge has a "Your Turn" feature that reminds users when it's their turn to respond. The video-first dating app, Snack, has an anti-ghosting feature that reports users that ghost too frequently. The more someone ghosts, the less a user's profile gets seen. There's even an anti-ghosting dating app called Elate, specifically designed with features that help prevent ghosting.

OkCupid’s Global Head of Comms on Using Data

Posted on September 30, 2022

OkCupid Michael KayeRAGAN – Michael Kaye is the global head of communications at OkCupid. He shared some of his thoughts on data in storytelling. "For me, communication is just as much about strategy as it is about execution," Kaye said. "I like taking a hands-on approach. That includes how I think about data when it comes to telling the OkCupid story." One of the first things he did upon joining the comms team was sit down with the data and analytics team and learn how they work. Kaye urges communicators to remember that data can come in all forms, not just numbers. OkCupid obtains much of its data in the form of worded answers. When someone joins the platform, they answer a series of questions that matches them with potential dates based on the compatibility of the answers. Kaye's incorporation of data across all aspects of his comms strategy is a reminder that there's always a story within the data. 70% of OkCupid's earned media coverage in the U.S. included data points from in-app questions.
