Joel Simkhai – Challenges and Opportunities

Posted on April 27, 2023

LTR – Joel, an Israeli-American tech entrepreneur, founded Grindr, a dating app for gay and bisexual men based on location. Grindr became widely popular after its launch in 2009 and transformed the way people connect in the LGBTQ+ community. Simkhai was the CEO of Grindr until 2018 when he sold the company to the Chinese gaming company Kunlun Group. He was recognized as one of Forbes' "30 under 30" in the Technology category in 2012 for his work on Grindr. Recently, Joel launched a new gay dating app called Motto, which is different from other dating apps as it only shows users a limited number of profiles per day. Motto is mainly targeted toward casual dating and hookups within the LGBTQ+ community.

Joel discusses the challenges and opportunities of the dating industry. One of the advantages of starting a dating app today is the availability of technology that simplifies building the app and scaling it. However, a major disadvantage is the highly competitive and crowded market space. Simkhai also emphasizes that it is essential to focus on marketing and growing the network to gain more users. He predicts that the future of dating apps will prioritize the value of the network and the authenticity of users. Finally, he predicts that software development will become more accessible and iterative, which will make it easier for anyone to build an app.

The April LTR was kindly sponsored by technology providers Livebox by The Meet Group, Courtland Brooks and Matchmaker.com

India’s Court Shields Bharat Matrimony in Google Dispute

Posted on April 26, 2023

Bharatmatrimony logo 2020MONEY CONTROL – The Madras High Court has temporarily prevented Google from delisting Bharat Matrimony and its affiliate from the Play Store over disputes regarding Google's new payment policy. Bharat Matrimony claims Google is misusing its dominant position in the Play Store ecosystem to force app developers to comply with the uneconomical billing policy. The court has granted a stay until June 1, 2023, giving Google time to respond to the allegations. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) previously imposed a penalty on Google for abusing its dominant position and directed it not to restrict or discriminate against app developers using third-party billing services. However, several Indian startups have accused Google of trying to circumvent the CCI's order with its new policy. The Delhi High Court directed the CCI to consider the startups' pleas, with a hearing held on April 25, though the outcome is currently unknown.

Tinder’s Verification Process Will Now Use AI and Video Selfies

Posted on April 26, 2023

Tinder photo verificationTECH CRUNCH – Tinder is rolling out an AI-powered update to its Photo Verification feature. In the past, users would take pictures of themselves, posing as instructed, to become verified and receive a blue check. Now, Tinder is requiring a video selfie instead of photos. Plus, it will soon allow users to restrict their chats to only those members who are also Verified. Tinder says it's working with a third-party partner to manage the video selfie verification process, rather than running it in-house, but declined to name the vendor.

Snack App’s AI Chatbots Offer New Way to Navigate Online Dating

Posted on April 26, 2023

Snack logo for social mediaLOS ANGELES TIMES – The dating app Snack introduces AI chatbots to help users navigate the initial stages of online dating. Users train their chatbot avatars to answer questions and engage in conversation on their behalf. Snack's CEO, Kim Kaplan, believes this approach can reduce the stress and time spent on back-and-forth messaging. The article highlights some issues with the AI implementation, such as bots making plans without the user's knowledge. While some experts see potential in AI chatbots for improving dating app experiences, others question their ability to accurately represent users and foster authentic connections.

LOT Network Provides Startups With Protection Against Patent Trolls

Posted on April 26, 2023

LOT Network logoCANADIAN LAWYER – LOT Network, a non-profit organisation, offers startups protection against patent trolls that acquire patents without producing any goods or services or conducting research and development. Patent litigation initiated by patent trolls has increased consistently since 2016, holding steady in 2022 compared to 2021. The study by High-Tech Solutions and commissioned by the LOT Network analysed the behaviour of these companies that account for almost 60% of patent litigation worldwide, and some sources say that reaches 88% in the high-tech sector. Attacks from patent trolls can deter investors and derail financing initiatives, including IPOs. The LOT Network provides immunity against patent litigation stemming from those assets by providing a license to all other network members. The members range from market leaders such as IBM, Toyota, Visa, Canon, Google, Red Hat, Tesla, Cisco, Amazon, Microsoft, Alibaba, and Salesforce, to smaller companies across industries, including dating app ChristianCafe.com, and deep-tech enterprise Meta Materials Inc.

Automated Dating: the Rise of AI Tools for Romance

Posted on April 25, 2023

Rizz iconWASHINGTON POST – Several start-ups are using AI to optimize and automate online dating with tools like Rizz, YourMove.ai, and Keys AI. These tools help users with everything from creating opening lines to generating responses to messages. AI dating tools can help people with social anxiety, difficulties reading social cues, and help users stand out on dating apps. The lack of personalization is a significant challenge, but founders of these start-ups believe that as AI technology improves, these tools will become more authentic and tailored to a user's personality.
