Gen Z Is Breaking up With Dating Apps, Ofcom Says

Posted on November 29, 2024

TinderTHE GUARDIAN – Ofcom reports a decline in the use of top UK dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, and Grindr, with Gen Z increasingly favoring real-life connections. Tinder lost 600K users, and Hinge dropped by 131K since 2023. Analysts suggest the novelty of dating apps is fading for younger users, who now romanticize in-person interactions. Apps still appeal to younger adults, reaching 18% of 18-24-year-olds, but challenges like safety concerns and overwhelming choices persist. Match Group acknowledges the shift, aiming to create lower-pressure, more authentic experiences for Gen Z users.

Study: Relationships Formed Online Are as Strong as Those Formed in Person

Posted on November 29, 2024

Dating appsPSYPOST – A recent study published in the journal Social Sciences suggests that romantic relationships initiated through dating apps are not significantly different in quality from those formed in person. Using surveys of 233 college students, researchers assessed relationship satisfaction, intimacy, and trust. Results showed comparable levels of satisfaction, suggesting that the stigma around online dating is diminishing as apps become normalized. However, the study was limited to a single university, highlighting the need for broader research.

MillionaireMatch Reveals the Importance of Timely Responses

Posted on November 28, 2024

MillionaireMatch logoBUSINESSWIRE – A MillionaireMatch survey reveals that most users expect replies within two hours, with delays reducing interest. Peak engagement times include 8–11 PM, 12–2 PM, and weekends. Prompt replies during these periods boost connection chances, especially during holidays like Christmas and Valentine's Day.

Inside Raya: the Exclusive Celebrity Dating App

Posted on November 28, 2024

Raya logoDAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Raya, launched in 2015 as a dating app for creative professionals, is known for its exclusivity, requiring referrals and social media clout for membership. Despite its reputation for attracting A-list users like Ben Affleck and Cara Delevingne, the app's allure is fading, with fewer celebrities active today. TikTok and Reddit have demystified Raya's elite image, revealing mixed reviews about its matchmaking and user experience. While some see it as a status symbol, many find it impractical due to distant matches and lack of genuine connections, questioning if the hype still holds up.

New Dating Apps Betting on Matchmaking

Posted on November 28, 2024

Cheers logoBUSINESS INSIDER – Several new "matchmaking" dating apps have launched in the past year, addressing dating-app fatigue. Sitch is an AI matchmaking app launched in New York in November. Cheers is an app that lets friends play matchmaker in a social-media feed, launched in October. Facebook Dating even launched a matchmaking feature last month. Tinder's cofounder and former CEO, Sean Rad, said on a September episode of the 20VC podcast that he had always imagined the dating app moving beyond swiping and into matchmaking. In 2017, Hinge launched a stand-alone app called Matchmaker that lets friends swipe for each other. It appears to have since shut down. Tinder, also owned by Match Group, launched a similar feature in 2023.

Loop is a matchmaking app where everyone can set up their single friends. Only a third of the user base are singles; the rest are friends and family members or even professional or hobbyist matchmakers. Loop launched in 2023 and is currently free for all users.

Arrange should launch in December and will let users link their profiles with a "scout," a trusted friend or family member, who can talk with potential matches ahead of time and vet for compatibility.

Amori is a dating-advice app with characters users can chat with, is experimenting with matchmaking using a personal assistant (though it isn't live within the app yet).

Bumble Stumble: How Its 2024 Rebranding Led to Backlash and Lessons for Startups

Posted on November 28, 2024

Bumble logoJUMPSTART MAGAZINE – Bumble's rebranding woes signal a need for deeper market insights. Bumble's 2024 rebrand, communicated through a seemingly anti-celibacy campaign backfired. The "Opening Moves" feature allows women to set up to three pre-composed icebreakers on their profiles, a significant pivot from Bumble's original model, which empowered women to initiate conversations.

Bumble also rolled out a new logo with bolder fonts and a modern color palette aimed at appealing to Gen Z, with the new tagline, "We've changed so you don't have to." In a controversial 30s ad, now unlisted on YouTube, a woman considering becoming a nun and swearing off dating is tempted back into the dating scene by a shirtless gardener and a phone with Bumble installed. This ad, along with billboard slogans like, "You know full well a vow of celibacy is not the answer" and "Thou shalt not give up on dating and become a nun," sparked significant backlash.

Bumble admitted to its mistake and donated to the National Domestic Violence Hotline and other organizations. Here are 3 lessons: Understand your audience's sentiment. Stay true to your core mission. Acknowledge mistakes swiftly and take corrective action.

The End of an Era: Reflections on Venntro Media Group

Posted on November 28, 2024

Venntro logo 2021ROS
S WILLIAMS – Aug. '24 was the end of an era. Venntro Media Group, my 21-year venture, was placed into administration. This decision was difficult, coming after years of navigating an ever-changing industry and mounting challenges that ultimately proved insurmountable. We overextended, stalled, and couldn't recover. Venntro, at peak, employed nearly 200, with revenues of almost $50m/yr, and EBITDA of nearly $8m, all bootstrapped. I want to deeply apologize to our shareholders, staff, and creditors who have been affected. In the final months, I injected all my personal funds into the company. Just under £200,000. My wife used up her savings to support payroll in the final month. I was irrationally optimistic, and when the tide turned, it turned quickly. The assets and operations of Venntro have been acquired by another company that I will continue to support.

Here’s How Socializing Will Change Under Trump

Posted on November 27, 2024

Trump
MEDIUM – Every president brings societal change. Hot topics in 2025…

Radicalization Leading To Loneliness – Hate propaganda works, and it sells. Unfortunately, it's addictive and changes who the users are as people. It makes finding new friends harder than before. My remedy for this is simple: be aggressively friendly.

Rise of 'Lavender Marriages' – i.e. Heterosexual marriages between two homosexual people, often with the goal of hiding the spouses' sexuality. Traditional, romantic marriage has become a major risk, especially for women.

MINOs – Women increasingly don't want to bother with marriage. Divorce is more expensive and difficult to obtain. Women will want to have relationships with men, but not make it legal. They may do a Civil Union or become MINOs – Married in Name Only.

Invite-Only Social Media + Private Dating Apps – More people are questioning their social media use. Social media is pretty poisonous. There will be new social media sites that require an ID to join, and invite-only dating apps. e.g. Raya.

The 4B Movement – 4B is no marriage, no children, no dating, no sex. Dating has become risky, especially for women who have a lot of good things in their lives. The rollback of women's rights will lead more women to eschew relationships with men altogether.

Private Social Clubs And Lounges – People are nervous about approaching people the old-fashioned way. I've seen private invite-only workspaces, private nightclubs, as well as private dinner clubs pop up. Privacy is a major selling point. People [need] a place where they can feel safe socializing.

Monetized Interactions – With dating becoming an increasingly risky endeavor, you're going to see a lot more people paying for human interaction. Both men and women will increasingly be willing to pay for AI chatbots. Chat services from adult entertainers and models. Parasocial relationships. Paid dates and escorts. Monetized scheduled outings where people dine together as a way to meet new people.

Mark Brooks: A dystopian viewpoint. Is this realistic? Some of my team members would agree, alas. There's an opportunity to meet people where they're evolving towards, with truly insightful and enabling product design.
