OC REGISTER – July 18 – In January, Mark Brooks, a national consultant to Internet dating sites, asked executives from many dating sites to talk about the impact they were having on society. Among the conclusions: In 20 years, people will want to go to the Internet to find a permanent partner and not rely on a chance "real meeting." Last year, Brooks estimates that Americans alone spent $1.7B trying to connect.

Turning Love Into Money in China
WSJ – July 5 – Chinese online dating market is expanding fast. According to Oppenheimer & Co., there were 19M visitors to Chinese dating sites in 2010, only a fraction of the estimated 156M single adult Internet users. That number is expected to increase to 60M by 2015. Market leader Jiayuan, which claims 44% of sector revenue, operates a fee-for-results model. Second- and third-place rivals Zhenai and Baihe require an upfront fee or provide a personality matching service. Internet consultancy iResearch projects total revenue from China's online dating will expand from $74M in 2010 to $290M in 2015.

Online Dating: No Longer Just for Youngsters
SMART MONEY – June 30 - According to IBISWorld, baby boomers now represent about 20% of online daters, and growing: The number of online dating site users 50+ jumped 8% from Feb '10 to Feb '11 according to comScore. In response, the $1.9 billion online dating industry has developed several sites specifically for older Americans, including SeniorPeopleMeet.com, SilverSingles.com and OurTime.com, which IAC (the owner of Match.com) launched last month.

Time Spent on Mobile Apps Has Surpassed Web Browsing
TECH CRUNCH – June 20 – According to mobile app analytics firm Flurry, the average user now spends 9% more time using mobile apps than the Internet. In June users spent an average of 81 minutes daily on mobile apps, compared to 74 minutes on the web. This compares to 66 minutes on mobile apps daily in December of 2010, and 70 minutes spent daily on the web. Games and Social Networking categories dominate, capturing 47% and 32% on consumer time spent daily, respectively.

Dating Online the Second Time Around
ASSOCIATED PRESS – June 2 – Dating online the second time around – after divorce or the death of a spouse – isn't always second nature among the nation's 78M boomers. They often have unrealistic notions of how to hunt for love and companionship, said Pepper Schwartz, a sociology professor. In addition, Schwartz said, "Men are very interested in women being self-sufficient. Women are deathly afraid of becoming nursemaids. Boomers ages 55 to 64 are the fastest-growing age group since 2000, jumping 43% to ~35M. On eHarmony.com, people 50 + are one of the fastest growing segments. The same goes for Match.com, with 25% of its members are between 50 and 65. Boomers on Match have grown 89% in the last five years.

Playboy Survey Reveals Internet’s Impact On Sex
DIGITAL LIFE – May 18 – According to a recent poll by Playboy, more people are watching porn (78% now, compared to 40% in 1983). Online dating sites are here to stay, with 33% of men and 23% of women engaged in hot pursuit, even if they're already in monogamous relationships. 41% of men and 47% of women have suspected a partner of cheating.

Online Dating Despite Recession
THE INDEPENDENT – May 18 – In a time when many social activities have cut as unnecessary expenditures, online dating is thriving. The industry has proven itself recession proof, as more singles than ever look to the internet to find love. According to LoveGiest, 96% of singles are looking for emotional security rather than financial security. According to Oxford University, 30% of people have tried online dating and 15% of those have met their current partner online.
More Chinese Singles Are Looking For Love Online
TIME – Apr 25 – Chinese parents commonly expect their sons or daughters to be married by the time they're 30. The pressure has been blamed for rocketing divorce rates, which reached a new peak in 2010. ~2M couples registered for divorce last year. Dating pressure is also driving a major boom in online dating. China currently has 180M bachelors, up to half of whom are thought to be looking for love online. According to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, by 2020 there will be 24M more men of marriage age than women. Those numbers mean big business. It's estimated that online dating sites attracted 3M paying customers last year, who collectively spent ~$150M. "Revenues are rising fast. We expect to take in 200 to 300M RMB ($30 to $45M) this year," says Li Song, founder of Zhenai.com, one of China's three largest dating sites.
