Posted on July 4, 2016

Huggle logoBUSINESS INSIDER – July 2 – A new survey, carried out by social app Huggle, has found that 62% of people say dating apps like Tinder make them feel self-conscious and depressed about their appearance. Huggle doesn't use "face-swiping" and matches people based on the locations they go to. It works in a similar way to French dating app Happn. Huggle has received investment from Andrey Andreev, the Russian entrepreneur who cofounded dating app and social network Badoo. Huggle was founded by model Stina Sanders and gardening blogger Valerie Stark.

Gather, Cloud-based Matchmaking Service

Posted on June 9, 2016

Gather screenshotJAKARTA POST – June 9 – The app is designed with Asian users, especially women, in mind; to optimize processes of IRL meetings. Gather lets users organize on-demand social "Gatherings", be they group gatherings or individual meet-ups. To host a Gathering, women choose one of four social activities: lunch, coffee, drinks or after-hours. They set the Gathering time and location and invite other friends to cohost. Users are able to discover nearby Gatherings, see cohost profiles and apply to stop by. Hosts will then be able to decide the number of guests they want to meet. The app recently formed a strategic partnership with local food and beverage conglomerate Ismaya Group and is currently in the seed round with US$500K investment from Silicon Valley angel investors.

Despite Debt & No Revenue, Philippine Dating App Scores $500K

Posted on May 23, 2016

Peekawoo screenshot bigFORBES – May 21 – Valenice Balace of Manila started an online dating service, Peekawoo, with $640 of her own money. People get to know each other through games and questions. The service has 200K users, 40% active, but has never made money. She has no monetization scheme. In June 2013 at an e-commerce conference, she met a venture capitalist who invested 30K in her business. 6 months later he poured in another $105K. Peekawoo later hit a wall of debt steep enough to make Balace feel depressed and consider shutting the service down. But another venture capital investor from San Francisco suddenly e-mailed this year and offered money without even a pitch. That sum was $500K to be spent over four years.
