Matchmaking in China

Posted on March 30, 2007

Chinese_singlesCBN — Mar 29 — A social institution from the early days of the Song Dynasty until the Communist Revolution in 1949, the matchmaker lost favor along with arranged marriages and other traditional customs.  Chinese matchmaking has come back into fashion. There are now 20,000 matchmaking industries legally registered with the Chinese government.  According to iResearch, the Chinese matchmaking industry in 2004 grossed ~$11 billion RMB (~$1.3 billion), exceeding the $1 billion matchmaking industry of the U.S. But unlike the U.S. industry, Chinese online dating sites only accounted for 0.3% of the market, but is expected to grow to 4% by next year. Match.com recently purchased Chinese site eDodo.com.

Shaadi SEAL

Posted on March 28, 2007

ShaadiSHAADI.COM — Mar 28 — Shaadi offers members the option of verifying their own identities. "SEAL is short for Screened, Examined & Attested Label. If your profile has a Shaadi SEAL, it means that Shaadi has screened your profile and also obtained documentary proof of: Name, Photo, Age, Residential Address, Telephone Number, Email Address, Marital Status if Divorced/Annulled. View sample Shaadi SEAL profile. It's FREE! Send us documents supporting key data elements in your profile. You can upload scanned copies of the documents or post them. We will examine the data and attest them against the documents. If all your data are found in order, you will be the proud owner of a Shaadi SEAL." This is about as simple as it gets. It's probably not too difficult to forge documents, but then again, it's better than nothing. The cost for providing this service is minimal. ConfirmID.com is FriendFinder's effort to do the same.  Unfortunately, even though it was bundled with the Gold membership, very few people opt to send in their documents.

Chinese Matchmaking Site Cuts Down Deception

Posted on March 14, 2007

Baihe20logoSHANGHAI DAILY — Mar 12 — Beginning today, Baihe.com will screen its eight million online daters against an ID authentication system it jointly developed with the Ministry of Public Security, said CEO Jason Tian. "In the long run, we'll arrange dates only for those who are proven to be telling the truth," he said. A survey by China Computer World Research showed 32% felt it was risky because prospective partners misrepresented themselves online.

The full article was originally published at Shanghai Daily, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Baihe.com is China's equivalent of eHarmony.

Mark Brooks: The Asian internet dating conference will be in Shanghai in May. Last year CEO's of Bharat Matrimony, YeeYoo, Baihe and other leading Asian sites were present. Small crowd, very high quality. I recommend attending it this year…and spending the ensuing weekend enjoying Shanghai. It's at the Four Points Sheraton in Shanghai, which is reasonably priced. Check out sidestep.com for the best pricing.
