Match Acquires Netclub and Edodo

Posted on February 27, 2007

Edodonetclub_1PRESS RELEASE — Feb 27 — Match.com has acquired Netclub in France and edodo China. Match had record revenue of $311 million in 2006 (up 25%). Global market development contributed greatly, most notably in the U.K. and Scandinavia. Match operates 35 country sites in 15 languages. Netclub is the #3 French dating site. According to JupiterResearch, European online dating is expected to grow 30%.

There are 64 million online singles in China. iResearch.com forecasts the online dating category will nearly double in 2007. Social networking site, eDodo has 180,000+ paid members and gains ~3,000 new paid subscribers each day.

Mark Brooks: China offers a lucrative long term opportunity. Acquisition is the sensible way to enter this market. Netclub is #14 in Canada, down from #6 in October 2006. I don't see them in the French Alexa top 100, but I'm sure that will change soon. See OPW left bar.

USA Love Brokers Eye China

Posted on February 16, 2007
Asian_dating_3REUTERS — Feb 13 — Match.com has secured Love21CN.com , one of China's biggest online dating service providers, as its main target for a potential stake purchase or business partnership. eHarmony is also looking at potential partners in China. In November, China.com said it would team up with Meetic for business promotion. Meetic in July also launched a localized Chinese site called "Mi Tang," or "Sweetie" in English. A Meetic-led venture capital consortium is also expected to invest $20 million in Yeeyoo.  iResearch expects the Chinese online personals market revenue to grow by ~60% annually to 653 million yuan ($84.21 million) by 2008.  MySpace will launch in China within months. GSR Ventures and U.S. fund Mayfield jointly invested $2 million in "Baihe" — "Lily" in English — in late 2005.  In December, Baihe began charging 1,980 yuan per person for its high-end "Golden" service.  Most Chinese dating sites are free.
Mark Brooks: I have an interview with the CEO of Baihe.com lined up for OPW in March. Online dating has a casual connotation in China and is often referred to as 'friends-making.' The Asian internet dating conference is scheduled for May in Shanghai. See idate2007.com.

Online Dating in Pyongyang

Posted on February 5, 2007

ECONOMIST — Feb 1 — North Korea’s dictator, Mr Kim, believes there are three kinds of fool in the 21st century: smokers, the tone-deaf and the computer-illiterate. One of his young compatriots said, "Officially, our computers are mainly for educational and scientific purposes," he says, before claiming: "Chatting on our web, I also met my girlfriend." N.Korea launched a nationwide intranet in 2000. Known as Kwangmyong ("bright"), it has a browser, an e-mail programme, news groups and a search engine. Only a few thousand people are allowed direct access to the internet. FULL ARTICLE @ ECONOMIST

The Net’s Next Phase

Posted on November 7, 2006

I've inserted some commentary under MB

FORTUNE MAGAZINE — Nov 7 — In early October, at Fortune's annual Most Powerful Women Summit, blog queen Arianna Huffington led a panel called Understanding the Internet's Future, with Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker, Motorola CTO Padmasree Warrior, and Marissa Mayer, Google's VP of search products and user experience.

WARRIOR: The Internet is still in phase two. Phase three will be about making it pervasive, where everybody in the world has access to it. To do that, there's going to be a different kind of device. [She holds up a cell phone.] At Motorola we call this "the device formerly known as the cellphone." In the next ten years the Internet will follow you. It'll be in your pocket, in your purse, on you.

MB: Mobile dating will grow to be bigger than online dating, simply because people will eventually interface with the internet on mobile device more often th on laptop or PCs.  Mobile dating and matchmaking + webcam + location based services, will be at the heart of future dating company success stories.

MEEKER: The first computing experience for the majority of the world in the next two or three years will be on a mobile device. In 2006, 25 percent of the two billion mobile phones in use will be either 2.5g or 3g phones, broadband-enabled. The mobile market is kind of where the broadband market was two or three years ago. If we look at data-services global revenue for the mobile market today, it's a $70 billion market. Just the personalized ringtone, Screensaver, music part of the business, that's a $20 billion business globally – equal in size to the online global advertising market. That's equal in size to Yahoo plus Google plus MSN plus iVillage.

China has become the largest user of technology products and services in the world based on number of users. India will be the third-largest market some time in the next five years.

MB: Services like Baihe.com, eHarmony's equivalent in China, are getting massive user-ship. BharatMatrimony, Shaadi and Jeevansathi, along with Orkut lead the way in India.  Mobile services are also springing up and experiencing massive growth, especially amongst the younger set.

WARRIOR: We made $2 billion providing ringtones to service providers. It's interesting that people will pay $2 now to get two lines of a song to play when their phone rings, but they resist paying 99 cents for a full song on their PC or MP3 player. Why? Because it's personalizing the device. It makes a statement about who you are. Think about how to do that with video.

MB: Webdate has the best platform for webcam based internet dating. The problem with webcam based dating is that it's impossible for sites to police, and can turn XXX quickly. Still, it's the future. Voice and video are essential offerings for future online personals leaders.

WARRIOR: We just launched a device in China, where text messaging isn't possible because there are 3,000 Chinese characters. So we invented finger-writing recognition. With your finger you can write any Chinese character, and the device recognizes it. It's the fastest-selling device in China.

In India we're adding five million subscribers – like connecting all of Denmark every month – with a new low-cost device. Most people cannot read and write, so we went to an icon-based browser. As for the thumb typing, it depends on the generation. I have a 13-year-old son who types faster with his two thumbs than with his fingers on a PC. One of the things he said to me was, "Mom, why do you watch TV? It doesn't do anything with you. It just sits there." That generation thinks very differently than we do.

In China mobile romance is a huge business. People pay $2 a day for online dating on a mobile device. You put your profile on the Web, and you get an alert when somebody who matches your profile is near you at a party. You can text-message them. The statistics say that one in every six messages results in a date. They're bringing on 250,000 subscribers a month on this service.  There's something called text flirtation going on at parties.

WARRIOR: We have to think very differently about the next ten years. Today about 2.5 billion people are connected on a mobile service. There are four billion people waiting to be connected.  About a quarter of them are in India and China. About half of them are in countries like Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

MB: In ten years time, game over internet dating.  Mobile dating will have cleared the table.

Indian Bride Sites

Posted on October 30, 2006

Bharatlogo_2BUSINESS WEEK – Oct 30 — In September Yahoo and Silicon Valley venture capital firm Canaan Partners jointly paid $8.5 million for ~10% of BharatMatrimony.com, a nine-year-old marriage Web site that also has 50 offices across India to serve those without Net access. "BharatMatrimony will help us get a larger share of the Internet market" in India, says Yahoo India Managing Director George Zacharias. Microsoft hooked up with Shaadi.com a year ago, though it didn't invest any money in the site. "Shaadi helps attract huge numbers of users," says MSN India country manager Jaspreet Bindra. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers plowed $4.6 million into Info Edge, which runs matrimonial site Jeevansathi.com. Google is said to be prospecting for a partner. Some 7.5 million people use marriage sites, up from 4 million in 2004, the Internet & Mobile Association of India estimates. Registration is free. Users pay when they want to contact a potential partner. The sites are likely to take in ~$21 million this year. But there's plenty of room to grow. Indians lay out nearly $500 million a year for offline marriage services such as print classifieds. "Today the emphasis is on compatibility and being a professional, something the Internet lets you test, as opposed to the traditional contacts," says Anupam Mittal, Shaadi.com's founder.

The full article was originally published at Business Week, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: I have an interview with the CEO of Bharat Matrimony in the pipeline. There's a lot U.S. companies can learn from these innovative Indian sites.

Blatant Facebook Rip-Off Gets Acquired

Posted on October 25, 2006

Facebookclone_1MASHABLE BLOG — Oct 24 — Beijing-based social network for college students, Xiaonei.com (~1million users), was acquired by Oak Pacific Interactive (OPI), a Chinese Internet consortium. The plan is to merge Xiaonei with 5Q, OPI's own college social network. The two sites now serve 90% of the active online student population. Xiaonei is a one-year old startup founded by Tsinghua university graduate Wang Xing. Even the strategy was a clone of Facebook – Xiaonei focused on the top schools first, realizing that widespread adoption would follow. They received angel funding from investors that included an ex-CTO of Amazon.com. FULL ARTICLE @ MASHABLE BLOG
