AshleyMadison.com Seeks IPO In London

Posted on April 15, 2015

Ashleymadison logo new apr 2010BOSTON GLOBE – Apr 15 - AshleyMadison.com wants to pursue an IPO in London this year. Avid Life Media, the site’s parent company, which failed with a previous IPO attempt in Canada, said it is looking to raise ~ $200M. The company wants the new funds for marketing and international expansion. AshleyMadison has 36M members in 46 countries. While the US accounts for ~50% of its business, Europe is the only region where the company has a real chance of doing an IPO because of its more liberal attitude towards adultery. The company has also set a target that 50 – 60% of its sales will come from Asia by 2020, including Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.

Adultery Is Legal In South Korea, And AshleyMadison Wants Back In

Posted on March 2, 2015

Ashleymadison logo new apr 2010FUSION – Feb 28 – A top court ruled on Thursday that the decades-old law, which made infidelity a crime that could land offenders in prison for up to two years, is outdated. It could mean the return of AshleyMadison.com which briefly operated in the country before it was shut down for breaking the infidelity law. AshleyMadison actually filed a lawsuit against South Korea and CEO Noel Biderman is not prepared to drop it quite yet. “If I’m not instantly turned back on, I might have to consider my actions,” he said.

Which Dating Sites Received The Best And Worst PR In 2014?

Posted on February 7, 2015

Good press bad press post 2015CB – Feb 7 – A lot of companies that traditionally receive a lot of press hits appeared to be lacking this year, including POF, Badoo, SNAP Interactive and Zoosk. Tinder got the most press coverage in 2014, followed by Match.com. Articles mainly highlighted Tinder's impressive growth. It also scored some negative press, most notably the Whitney Wolfe lawsuit. We heard a little less about eHarmony last year, but they still received solid press coverage thanks to their new eH+ service and the announcement of a plan to launch a "jobs matchmaker". OkCupid, as usual, made the list along with AshleyMadison, Grindr and Hinge. There were also companies with more sad than good news. Cupid was one of them. They sold their casual dating sites in 2013, posted weak 2013 annual results, tried unsuccessfully to revive their business, and even launched new services such as LoveBeginsAt and dating app Tangle. In December the news came out that the company decided to sell the remaining mainstream dating sites and quit the dating business. It was not an easy year for Spark Networks either. After some bad news for investors, a fight between the company leadership and Osmium partners began, ending in July with Osmium appointing 4 new directors to the Spark´s board. CEO Greg Liberman left the company in August and layoffs began in September.

AshleyMadison.com Keeps Making Money

Posted on February 3, 2015

Ashleymadison logo new apr 2010FORBES – Feb 9 – Avid Life Media is a privately held Toronto holding company that owns Ashley Madison, CougarLife and other dating sites. Avid Life Media grossed $115M for 2014, up 45% from the $78M it grossed in 2013. Pretax profits will come in at $55M. Worldwide, Ashley Madison has had 31M total users over its lifetime, with 6.8M active users. CEO Noel Biderman says his company is worth $1B. Match.com is worth $3.8B, or 12 times estimated 2015 operating earnings, and Tinder $1.3B, or 18 times estimated earnings. A sale would be a healthy but not crazy-big payday for Biderman. He owns just over 10% of the firm after selling off most of it in a $40M round in 2007. Ashley Madison launched in Israel, Hong Kong, Turkey and India in 2014 and is launching next in Thailand, with plans afoot for Russia, Ukraine and Nigeria.

Risk Factors For Cheating: Age, Gender And Relationship Satisfaction

Posted on January 28, 2015

Infidelity threeWSJ – Jan 26 – People are more likely to cheat on a partner in the year before a milestone birthday, according to researchers who worked with Ashley Madison. This suggests that there is roughly a 10-year cycle for heightened risk of infidelity. Here are the risk categories. People who engage in infidelity typically fall into more than one.

  1. Gender – Men are more likely to cheat.
  2. Age – Not only 9-enders are at heightened risk of cheating. People 35 – 50 tend to be focused on careers and kids. So people younger or older have a greater chance of cheating.
  3. Opportunity – Researchers call this “environmental” risk. For example: traveling frequently without a spouse put people at a heightened risk for infidelity.
  4. Relationship Dissatisfaction
