Badoo Launches New AI Tool That Detects Explicit Photos

Posted on July 2, 2020

Badoo private detectorDAILYMAIL.CO.UK – June 30 – Badoo has launched a new safety feature that uses AI to detect unsolicited nudes that get sent through the app. Badoo says its 'private detector' has a 98% accuracy rate when covering up intimate photos. The AI identifies potentially offending photos, automatically blurs them and gives users a warning that they could contain 'inappropriate content'. The feature was introduced to the 'feminist dating app' Bumble last year, which is owned by the same holding company as Badoo.

Dating Apps in Balkan

Posted on June 30, 2020

Badoo logo 2018BALKAN INSIGHT – June 29 – Like the rest of the world, the Balkans has seen a rise in the use of dating apps during the pandemic, with data showing the length of daily conversations is increasing. While Tinder is the most popular dating app across Europe, in Romania and Bulgaria it is Badoo that is used the most. Created in 2006 by Russian entrepreneur Andrey Andreev, Badoo now has ~450M users globally, with daily messages sent between users exceeding 350M. "Our data shows that more conversations are happening now, with increases of up to 35%," said Tristan Pineiro, Badoo's global head of communications. In other Balkan countries, dating apps are used more sparingly. One such place is North Macedonia, where the use of dating apps like Tinder are still frowned upon. For some, Instagram functions as a dating app instead.

MagicLab Billionaire Andreev to Launch New Mobile App Business

Posted on February 1, 2020

Andrey andreev 2020 linkedinFINANCIAL TIMES – Jan 31 – Blackstone's all-cash acquisition of Mr Andreev's stake in MagicLab (Badoo, Bumble) closed this week, valuing the group at around $3bn. Mr Andreev (45) said. "It's given me ability, time and money . . . I don't want to retire." He said that one idea is focused on charity and donations – something he wants to make "more accessible . . . the same as what I did with dating". MagicLab is now led by Whitney Wolfe Herd. Andreev founded Badoo (now 425m+ users) in 2006 as a hybrid of social networking and dating and pioneered the "freemium" business model. A non-compete agreement with Magic Lab means that Mr Andreev will no longer be in the dating business. Twenty former Magic Lab staff have joined him in a new venture, based in Mayfair, that will retain Mr Andreev's longstanding focus on mobile apps and social networking. He plans to hire more soon.

MagicLab Told to Implement Workplace Reforms After Sexism Allegations

Posted on January 30, 2020

Magic lab logo with brandsFORTUNE – Jan 30 – MagicLab, the parent company of Bumble and Badoo, should reform its workplace policies following allegations of sexual harassment, a U.K. law firm has found. MagicLab hired Doyle Clayton, a British firm specializing in employment law, to investigate allegations of a misogynistic and hostile work environment for women raised in a July Forbes story. In its statement, Doyle Clayton said there was "a lack of credible evidence in relation to most" of 24 specific allegations Forbes raised in its story, including "the more serious ones." It did, however, find there was evidence to support three allegations, which it described as "minor".

Posted on January 8, 2020

Badoo video chat promo picMIRROR.CO.UK – Jan 7 – Badoo was the first dating app to test video feature in 2016, which can only be activated once both parties have matched and exchanged one message. The call happens through the app so there's no need to share any personal details like a phone number. Tristan Pineiro, head of communications, claims that the chances of a real life date being a success are higher if you've had a video call before.
