Dating Apps Say Sex Isn’t Everything in a Post-pandemic World

Posted on June 22, 2021

Hyperconnect logoREUTERS – June 22 – "There's a really interesting trend that has been taking place in the connection space, which is this desire to have platonic relationships," said Bumble founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd. Her company is investing in its Bumble BFF (best friends forever) feature, which it said comprised ~9% of Bumble's total monthly active users in Sep 2020. Meanwhile Match Group paid $1.7B this year for South Korean social media firm Hyperconnect, whose apps let people chat from across the world using real-time translation. Hyperconnect's revenue jumped 50% last year. Gay dating app Hornet, meanwhile, aims to be more of a social network focused on users' personal interests, rather than solely a hook-up service.

Behind Bumble’s Fight Against Unsolicited Nudes

Posted on June 14, 2021

Bumble icon 2020BUMBLE – June 14 – When Whitney Wolfe Herd founded Bumble back in 2014, safety was central to her mission. After learning one in three women using Bumble had received non-consensual lewd photos, Bumble introduced proprietary technology that automatically detects and blurs nude images. Bumble has been working with legislators at the state level to create penalties for sending unsolicited lewd photos. Now, the sharing of a lewd photo online without the recipient's consent in Texas is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500. This year, Bumble has worked with legislators to introduce additional state-level bills in both California and New York.

How Bumble Is Spreading Awareness About Unsolicited Fetishization

Posted on June 10, 2021

Bumble logo 2020ADWEEK – June 10 – Bumble recently conducted a survey finding one in every two respondents "[did] not have a clear understanding of what fetishization means as it relates to identities, race, body type, profession and more." In contrast, those most likely to experience unsolicited acts of fetishization showed a much clearer understanding of it. To break down its impact, Bumble released a short film revealing one-on-one conversations where each person discusses how this dehumanizing behavior has impacted them in and outside of dating.

Do Dating Companies Delete Users’ Data?

Posted on June 8, 2021

Delete1AVAST BLOG – June 3 – Match Group says that they don't share users' information between sites unless they ask them to, but they also say in their privacy policy that they might share that info for "limited and critical purposes, including for corporate audit, analysis and consolidated reporting, to comply with applicable law, and help keep our users safe." According to the Bumble Privacy Policy, they don't "sell" user data, according to the legal definition of "sell," but they do share demographic data and location with third party advertisers. They also share non-personal data with third parties for "research and analysis." So what happens to all that data when users leave? Unfortunately, the answer isn't so clear, especially for Match Group. But if someone deletes Grindr account, Grindr expunges everything they have about them after seven days. Spark Networks – the owner of Jdate and ChristianMingle – is based in Germany, which means they're subject to the GDPR. They are legally obligated to delete it. Bumble promises to delete users' data starting 28 days after they deactivate it. They say that they retain any information they might need for legal purposes.

S’More: “Tinder-fication” of Online Dating Is Over

Posted on May 26, 2021

Smore logoFORBES – May 26 – New data gathered by the dating app company S'More suggests that putting chemistry ahead of "hotness" and relationships over casual encounters may become the new norm in online dating, and some of the biggest players in the industry are getting in on the trend. S'More survey found that physical attraction was no longer rated as the most important factor when searching for a potential match. "Covid-19 certainly changed the equation," says CEO Cohen-Aslatei. "But beyond that, our data shows that people are starting to expect more from dating apps. They want real connections, not the fake photos and hyper-sexualization that has characterized so much of online dating over the past decade." S'More has developed a suite of features aimed to reduce the superficiality of online dating, and slow down the process. For one, users aren't able to view a clear photo of a potential match until they have had a meaningful conversation with that person. S'More is not alone in its effort. Tinder and Bumble recently added games to their video product, MeetMe added blurred video dating, and Chispa, a Match Group app for Latino and Latina singles, connects daters based on answers to trivia games. MuzMatch, a Muslim-focused dating app, also lets women keep their profiles blurred from men.

Why So Many Men Are Joining Bumble

Posted on May 24, 2021

Bumble bff iconYOUR TANGO – May 22 – The increasingly popular Bumble BFFs has become a surprisingly active place for men to seek out friendships. The launch of the BFFs service spiked male engagement on the app by 83%, in comparison to 43% for women. The app was originally made by women, for women, with CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd establishing the service to give women more control over their dating lives. Studies show that men lack friendships in general. A 2016 UK survey found that one in ten men couldn't recall the last time they made contact with their friends. Over half of the men reported having two or fewer friends they would discuss "a serious topic" with, and 19% of men over 55 said they lacked a close friend.
