Dating Apps Revolutionize Romance in India

Posted on May 5, 2021

India dating picNIKKEI ASIA – May 5 – Dozens of apps — other big names include Woo, TrulyMadly, OkCupid, Happn, Hinge, Tantan, QuackQuack and HiHi — are helping singles to pair up with partners of their choice. According to Statista.com, the online dating segment's turnover in India is expected to reach $783M by 2024 from $454M in 2021, making the country the second-largest national revenue generator for dating apps after the U.S. Currently, dating apps reach 2.2% of India's total population, with projections of 3.6% by 2024, according to industry surveys. Aisle achieved 3M downloads worldwide last year despite competition from Tinder and Bumble. QuackQuack, an Indian dating app launched in 2010, boasts 12M. TrulyMadly, another Indian app, claims 5M users. "Indian society is in a churn," says Delhi-based sociologist Bhavna Kapoor. "Rising education and financial independence among the youth, especially women, are making online dating more popular.

Is It Worth Paying a Premium to Find Love?

Posted on April 26, 2021

Tinder gold logoTHE GUARDIAN – Apr 25 – Tinder has three levels of subscription, Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum, each with different prices. The monthly fee is also linked to age. Users aged ~30 are being charged £27.49 or £29.49, while those under 30 are being charged £13.99 or £14.49. Tinder Plus seemed more random. Some users over 30 are being charged £19.49, most are being asked to pay £4.99, £8.99 or £9.99. Bumble charges £14.99 a month for Bumble Boost, and £32.99 for Bumble Premium. Coffee Meets Bagel charges £34 a month for its Premium service. Grindr also offers a more expensive package – Unlimited, at £31.99 a month. While most apps allow users to pay for premium services for just a month at a time, Plenty of Fish has a minimum premium subscription of three months for £39.99. The minimum time period to subscribe to eharmony's premium subscription is six months for £99.99. The dating and relationships coach Kate Mansfield argues that the most dateable people will be snapped up before they sign up for a paid-for service. Quality, confident people don't need to pay for matchmaking services. Instead of a paid-for app, she advises working on yourself: "Invest in coaching or therapy to get yourself in the best place possible and then use apps' free version to find love."

Why Bumble Has Lost Its Buzz

Posted on April 15, 2021

Bumble logo 2020THE MOTLEY FOOL – Apr 15 – After a highly successful IPO, shares of Bumble have fallen 24% from their highs. Bumble benefited from the pandemic-driven stay-at-home economy, as online dating became one of the only mediums to meet a match. Yet despite the seemingly perfect environment for its business, the company still struggled to generate positive earnings. The company faces a drag on its business from Badoo, whose revenue per paying subscriber fell 9.8% in 2020. Bumble suffered an overall net loss of $142.8M, which was in stark contrast to the $85M profit in 2019. The swing owes to a significant 74% ($292M) increase in operating expenses, which grew much faster than the 19% increase in revenue. Granted, some of the additional expenses may not recur in 2021.

The Tech Billionaire Who Is Putting Women First

Posted on April 8, 2021

Bumble whitney wolfe herd screenshotBBC – Apr 8 – The co-founder of dating app Bumble, Whitney Wolfe Herd, has joined Forbes list of the super-rich. The 31-year-old became the world's youngest self-made female billionaire when she took Bumble public in February. Before Bumble, she was among the founding team at Tinder but after tensions with other executives – one of whom she had been dating – she left. The central focus of her app is that only women can initiate a conversation in heterosexual matches. She founded Bumble with help from early investor Russian billionaire Andrey Adreev, who also had a stake in Badoo, both of which he sold in November 2019. Ms Wolfe Herd owns a 11.6% stake in Bumble, giving her an estimated net worth of $1.3B. She also heads Badoo. The two apps have a combined 40M users, 2.4M of whom pay a subscription.

In the Age of Rising Cyberstalking, Dating Apps Fight Digital Abuse

Posted on April 7, 2021

No cyberstalking picTIMES OF INDIA – Apr 7 – According to Tinder, 38% of women report being bullied online, compared to 26% of men. 26% of women aged 18-24 reported being stalked and 25% reported being a target of online harassment. Bumble is releasing a safety guide, in partnership with Safecity, Red Dot Foundation's flagship public safety platform, to identify, prevent and combat digital abuse. The block and report feature has made it easy to block and report anyone who makes them uncomfortable. The photo verification feature helps prevent catfishing. The AI, Private Detector is able to capture, blur and alert users that they've been sent an unsolicited nude image. Tinder uses tools like automatic scans of profiles for red-flag language and images; manual reviews of suspicious profiles, activity, and user-generated reports; shadow-banning suspicious accounts; as well as blocking of email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses and other identifiers associated with bullying and harassment.
