Christian Cafe’s Journey – Founder Interview

Posted on February 9, 2024

Christiancafe logo 2019 with marginsSTEP BY STEP BUSINESS – Sam Moorcroft co-founded ChristianCafe.com in 1999.

FOCUS – Our purpose is to connect people who say they're Christians and want to meet other single people of shared faith. We give them options to pick how involved they are in their local church and their denomination. From the beginning, we focused our marketing efforts on America. Now, we've added UK, Australia, NZ, Philippines, Singapore, S.Korea, S.Africa. Today, it's half American, ~15% Canadian.

TEAM & TECH– My average staff tenure is 20+ years. I hired my most recent employee in 2002. The original programmer is still here. I had the advantage of having some very clever and knowledgeable people start with me. As tech. evolved, they learned it. We got a grant from the Canadian government for $100k+ because we built Apple's first dating app. I believe there was no other dating app, and we were the first back in 2010. We had first-mover advantage. We have such a niche foothold that ~75% of our traffic daily comes from people who already know us. I learned that employees want to know that you care about them. If you treat your employees well, they will return the favor ten times. It's very expensive to bring someone new in. It's also upsetting to the whole team because you've got to integrate somebody else in. My wife is our CMO. we've been married for 20 years, and we have five kids.

MARKETING – We've had 25k+ marriages. It works. ~25% of our traffic comes from marketing. We do Google Ads, Bing, and affiliate (CJ, Pepperjam, and direct affiliates). We typically pay 40% of lifetime including renewals. We also do a lot of CPL and CPA deals. Also a ton of SEO work: backlinks and content for specific long-tail search results, like, "Austin, Texas Christian singles." Lately, we've been using AI a lot. Our site is unique amongst all dating sites when people come in because we don't give people a permanent free trial. We treat you like you paid for the first 10 days but cut you off afterward.

SAFETY – We built an anti-scammer tool that is behavioral-based. We kill them, but we don't tell them they're dead. We also give a network of volunteers free access in exchange for finding abuse.

LOT Network Provides Startups With Protection Against Patent Trolls

Posted on April 26, 2023

LOT Network logoCANADIAN LAWYER – LOT Network, a non-profit organisation, offers startups protection against patent trolls that acquire patents without producing any goods or services or conducting research and development. Patent litigation initiated by patent trolls has increased consistently since 2016, holding steady in 2022 compared to 2021. The study by High-Tech Solutions and commissioned by the LOT Network analysed the behaviour of these companies that account for almost 60% of patent litigation worldwide, and some sources say that reaches 88% in the high-tech sector. Attacks from patent trolls can deter investors and derail financing initiatives, including IPOs. The LOT Network provides immunity against patent litigation stemming from those assets by providing a license to all other network members. The members range from market leaders such as IBM, Toyota, Visa, Canon, Google, Red Hat, Tesla, Cisco, Amazon, Microsoft, Alibaba, and Salesforce, to smaller companies across industries, including dating app ChristianCafe.com, and deep-tech enterprise Meta Materials Inc.

ChristianMingle Saw 89% YOY Increase In Paid Members

Posted on March 1, 2013

Christianmingle logoBUSINESSWEEK – Feb 28 – The $30M advertising and marketing push had made ChristianMingle an unexpectedly popular dating site with 8M registered users, 154K paying subscribers at $19.99 a month. That’s almost double the 84K paying subscribers of SparkNetwork’s groundbreaking Jewish singles site, JDate. SparkNetworks.com was founded in 1997. JDate grew rapidly by word of mouth. ChristianMingle was launched in 2004 and remained small until 2010, when Spark consulted with local ministers and prominent Christian leaders about how best to serve their constituents. As a result, the company founded an advisory council of church leaders and hired ChristianMingle spokeswoman Ashley Reccord, a pastor’s daughter, to help conduct outreach. Then the company launched Believe.com, which features Christian editorials, and redesigned the site into something more devout-seeming than JDate. Spark reported the number of ChristianMingle paid subscribers grew 89% for the Q4 of 2012 vs. the period a year earlier. There are other suitors in the market for Christian romance; eHarmony and ChristianCafe.com.

ChristianMingle.com Growth

Posted on January 10, 2013

Christianmingle logoWASHINGTON POST – Jan 10 – ChristianMingle is owned by the same company, Spark Networks, that owns JDate, the wildly successful Jewish dating service. Indeed, JDate has been the engine behind ChristianMingle’s “God” campaign this year. Spark has plowed revenue generated by the older, more established JDate into promoting the Christian site. ChristianMingle is now the biggest of Spark’s 28 dating sites, each for a specific subset of singles. The company says ChristianMingle is the nation’s leading Christian-based dating site, with ~8M registered members. Spark Networks' Christian dating division had revenue of $22.9M during the first nine months of 2012, an increase of 111% over the same period the year before. (Its Jewish division had revenue of $19.4M, down 5%). Spark poured ~$30M into marketing and advertising for the division, more than double the year before. Overall, Spark lost $4.45M over the first three quarters of 2012 after a loss of $503K during the same period of 2011. ChristianCafe, which says it is the only Christian-owned dating site among the major players, has a marketing tie-in with Focus on the Family, the conservative Christian group founded by author and radio preacher James Dobson. Focus on the Family once had ties with eHarmony.com and its founder, Neil Clark Warren, but eHarmony has moved away from a Christian-centric approach in a bid for a broader market.

More Christians Seeking Love Connection Online

Posted on February 10, 2012

CBN.COM – Feb 9 – Sam Moorcroft is CEO of ChristianCafe.com, an online dating site solely for believers. He appeared on Christian television CBN.com this week. He said the "old ways" of finding a mate at church or through friends are "falling by the way side." "The advantage of using a Christian only dating site is that that's our entire purpose," Moorcroft explained. "When you're on a site like Match.com or other secular ones you have to troll through all of these other profiles to figure out, 'Is the person I'm interested in actually a true believer.'"
