The Secret Wife Of Walter Mitty

Posted on January 7, 2014

The_Secret_Life_of_Walter_Mitty_posterOPW – Jan 7 – Irena and I saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, complete with eHarmony product segments. It seems the movie had a not so secret wife in eHarmony.

Overall, its very solid exposure for eHarmony. One wonders just how much control they had over the scripting process. eHarmony is indeed thoroughly laced into the movie. From the opening scene, the interstitials of an eHarmony rep/matchmaker calling Walter, and a somewhat awkward segment towards the end of the movie where Walter actually meets the rep in person. Great exposure, but…

There’s definitely some artistic license in the portrayal of eHarmony services. A rep calling out? Really? The rep was very casual and gave fairly basic feedback, and disclosed info about other members incoming winks. The movie got 50% on Rotten Tomatoes from reviewers but scored 79% from users. It was a fun ride, and it was good to see eHarmony get this much-needed exposure.

I guess I’m most intrigued with their choice of character in the rep. It was a really uncomfortable segment when the rep met Walter in person. This really felt contrived, un-entertaining, and not a particularly good portrayal of eHarmony. The character just seemed hokey and daft, and not really a good reflection of the industry. On the other hand, the reality of the new matchmaking services that eHarmony will offer will surely over-deliver on this casual and homey depiction of their services.

Next, I wonder how Corbin Bernsen will write Christian Mingle into his new movie…named “Christian Mingle”, no less!? We’ll review it as soon as we can get a copy. – Mark Brooks

Ben Stiller’s Movie Promted eHarmony To Launch eH+

Posted on December 16, 2013

Eharmony plusWXYZ – Dec 15 – Ben Stiller's new movie "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" has prompted eHarmony.com to upgrade their service to offer one-to-one counselling from a matchmaker. In the film, comedian Patton Oswalt plays the voice on the phone trying to help Stiller's character find love by constantly editing his profile. eHarmony's VP Grant Langston realized it wouldn't be accurate because eHarmony was a self-serve model.

eHarmony Launches Counseling Service For $5,000

Posted on November 3, 2013

Eharmony logo new may 13MARKETWATCH – Nov 1 – eHarmony members can now pay $5K and they’ll get a personal counselor to help sift through matches. The site will also approach them on their behalf. "After surveying 15K eHarmony members who earn ~$250K a year, it was clear there was huge demand for such a perk, says Grant Langston, eHarmony’s VP of customer experience. "When it comes to paying thousands of dollars — instead of eHarmony’s $60 monthly fee — dating sites need to manage the already high expectations carefully, says Mark Brooks, a dating-industry analyst. “It was only inevitable that free dating sites started to add these kinds of premium features,” he says. Others say it makes sense to combine a matchmaker with a dating site. “Match.com hired some matchmakers in Dallas to experiment with higher price points,” Brooks says. “Then things went quiet, and they let the matchmakers go.” “People point to the sting of rejection and the time it takes to sift through profiles as two of the biggest frustrations of online dating,” Brooks says. “But I wonder how many users have the disposable income for that kind of help.”

Sam Yagan Defends OKCupid’d Body Type Filters

Posted on October 7, 2013

Okcupid.blocks_desktop_largeTODAY – Oct 4 – OKCupid lets users filter out people by body type for a fee (5 – $10). The site has offered this tool for several months but only recently began to make it more prominent, said Sam Yagan. "The body-type filter is an extension of what happens in the real world," said Yagan. eHarmony has no plans to offer a similar screening tool. Physical attraction does play a role in dating, but so does education level, religion, and their “outlook on happiness,” said Arvind Mishra, the site’s VP of product management.
