Twitter’s Now A Dating Tool

Posted on February 4, 2010

Social dating STRAIGHT – Feb 4 - Meeting a romantic partner on-line isn’t a new phenomenon, as dating sites like Lavalife and eHarmony have been around for years. However, social-media services like Twitter and Facebook are opening up new avenues through which people can make on-line connections. While profiles on dating sites may offer only select details, social media can enable people to gain more insight into other people’s personalities. The rise of social-media services doesn’t worry Kate Bilenki, the operations manager for PlentyOfFish. Bilenki told the Straight her company is confident that its service remains the best way for people to make a romantic connection on-line. Bilenki asserted that, for the purpose of looking for love, Twitter is inefficient, as it connects users with a vast number of people, of which only a small percentage are possible romantic partners. “A lot of people on social-networking sites are married, they’re in relationships, and they’re not looking to date,” Bilenki said. “On our site, they’re looking for a relationship.” FULL ARTICLE @ STRAIGHT.COM

eHarmony Settles Lawsuit Over Gay Matchmaking

Posted on January 28, 2010

Eharmony compatiblepartners loga SF CHRONICLE – Jan 27 - As a result of a 2008 settlement with the state of New Jersey, which sued the company for discrimination, men and women seeking same-sex matches were redirected from eHarmony to an affiliate Web site, Compatiblepartners.net. A separate class-action civil rights lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles in 2007, saying that eHarmony violated California law barring businesses from discriminating based on sexual orientation. The firm would establish a $2M settlement fund, with about $500,000 set aside for gay, lesbian and bisexual Californians who can show they were harmed by eHarmony's policies. The company did not admit wrongdoing. Plentyoffish vs Match vs eHarmony vs TRUE

Posted on January 23, 2010

OPW – Jan 23 – Real Simple magazine ranked four of the most popular internet dating sites. Plentyoffish is huge and free but has distorted images. Match is simple to navigate, allows keyword search, and has smartphone apps but has poor screening techniques. TRUE offers background checks but has tacky ads. eHarmony does the matching for members but is more expensive.

Daters Without Borders

Posted on November 30, 2009

International dating NY POST – Nov 29 - More and more New Yorkers are searching for love on European dating sites. Lillian, a 42-year-old Manhattan copy editor signed up for Meetic.com. She Skypes with a Parisian man from the site for an hour each day. Susan, a 22-year-old grad student, also struggled with dating locally, so she widened her eHarmony parameters. Even “Real Housewives of New York City” reality star Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen met through Matchmaker.com while living on different continents. Mark Brooks, editor of OnlinePersonalsWatch.com, says international romance is a growing trend, due to singles’ increasing pickiness about potential life partners. “The longer the shopping list, the further afield you should cast your net,” he advises. A single New Yorker four years ago, he flew to Prague for a European online dating conference where he met and fell for a Czech woman. They married last April and now live in Malta with two daughters.

Here are some of the most popular dating sites from around the world:

eHarmony Rapped For Misleading Ads

Posted on November 18, 2009

Eharmony-logo MARKETING WEEK – Nov 18 – eHarmony.co.uk has
been slammed by the advertising watchdog for misleading claims in its
television campaign. Five viewers complained to the Advertising
Standards Authority to challenge the claim that 2% of US newlyweds met
via the site. eHarmony said the 2% figure was extrapolated from an
online study of 7,000 respondents undertaken by an independent market
research company. The ASA ruled eHarmony’s ad was misleading because it
had made an “absolute claim” that suggested a “definitive figure” of
marriages based on an extrapolated 2007 online survey. FULL ARTICLE @ MARKETING WEEK
