Facebook Extends Its Dating Service to Mexico, Argentina

Posted on March 28, 2019

Facebook dating screenshots1CNET – Mar 28 – Facebook has added Mexico and Argentina to the list of countries where its matchmaking service is offered. The dating service launched in September for users in Colombia, with later expansion to Canada and Thailand. Facebook also gave a preview of some new features users can expect in the near future, including one that appears to be designed to address safety concerns. The feature, called Live Location Sharing, allows users to share their date plans and live location with a friend or family member on Facebook via Messenger.

Match: Dominance in the U.S., Poised to Conquer Asia

Posted on March 1, 2019

Match group logo jan 2017SEEKING ALPHA – Mar 1 – Match has achieved market dominance in the online dating space. The main advantage of Match are:

  1. The "Network effects" when it comes to online dating (i.e. the more users on the site the more valuable it is). New entrants to the market would need to quickly reach a critical mass in order to compete
  2. The "best" User Interface has already been settled on. There is little revolutionary improvement to be made to the "swipe right, swipe left" interface pioneered by Tinder. Similar to the situation with Facebook years ago. Google learned this lesson the hard way years ago with Google Plus. Furthermore, every time the Match Group adds a feature to its existing products or launches a new dating app it effectively fills a niche in the industry and closes off a path for potential competitors.

Facebook is a non-issue. Online dating and Facebook do not mix as well as Mark Zuckerberg would want you to believe. Asia online dating a tremendous opportunity. The current statistics of singles who have never used an online dating product in Asia shows massive market potential.

Posted on January 30, 2019

Facebook-Dating-Feature-LaunchSOCIALBARREL – Jan 30 – According to Jane Manchun Wong, Facebook users will be able to share the current location in Messenger, which will alert their friends and families to their whereabouts should anything go wrong. Users will also be able to share plans about their dates, with friends and family on Messenger. This should be viewed as a safety measure. Inside Facebook’s Dating Experiment in Colombia

Posted on January 7, 2019

Fb dating screenshotFINANCIAL TIMES – Jan 5 – At first glance it resembles other dating apps. Users set up profiles, add photos and write a bit about themselves. They set an age range and a distance range for the people they wish to meet. But instead of swiping left or right, users tap on a profile photo to reveal a profile and can then choose either "pass" or "interested". Tapping on "interested" obliges them to leave a message before moving on to view other profiles. The program suggests dates based on users' Facebook behaviour and interests, but users can also use Facebook's Events and Groups to find a match. Three months after it launched, Facebook is cagey about how many people are using the service, but said it has received "lots of useful feedback" that was helpful as it rolled the service out in Canada and Thailand in November. There is now a "Second Look" option that allows users to review people they rejected first time round and a "Pause" option that temporarily stops dating suggestions without a profile being deleted altogether. The biggest challenge to the success of the service remains Facebook's trust problems, following a series of allegations about its use of the data that it collects.

Where Is Facebook Dating?

Posted on December 27, 2018

Facebook-dating-appINDIA TODAY – Dec 25 – Delay in rolling Facebook Dating to other countries could be stemming from the fact that Facebook is taking precautions and making sure that its service follows the laws. Facebook Dating was made available to the 30M FB users in Colombia. Subsequently, its reach was expanded to Canada and Thailand in November. One possible reason why the company is delaying the roll out is because its focus is on mitigating the series of disasters including the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

First Week of Facebook Dating

Posted on November 29, 2018

Facebook dating screenshotVICE CANADA – Nov 29 – Vice freelance writer Ebony-Renee Baker tested Facebook Dating. After about a week of using it, she grew frustrated with the feature's algorithm. On Facebook Dating users can tap "interested" or "pass" on the profiles that are suggested for them. The app forces users to start a conversation immediately once they "tap" interested. Pretty much immediately after she started using it, she begin getting unsolicited messages on the "interested" page. One day she received 30 messages from guys who she hasn't shown interest in. At this point she is feeling less inclined to go back on the app.

Facebook Dating Launching in Canada

Posted on November 9, 2018

Facebook dating logoTHE CANADIAN PRESS – Nov 9 – Facebook Dating, which was previously piloted in Colombia, operates with users creating profiles that are separate from their Facebook ones and kept out of sight of friends. The company will recommend matches that users aren't already friends with, but who share dating preferences, interests and if they'd like, mutual friends or groups and events. Facebook Dating's Canadian roll-out comes as Facebook is embroiled in privacy concerns following a series of data breaches. Some experts said the dating offering will raise privacy concerns of its own and is unlikely to assuage worries about the platform. Users will have to opt-in for the dating feature instead of being automatically enrolled. There will also be a feature that allows people to be blocked and prevents users from messaging potential interests more than once, if the other person hasn't reciprocated with a response. If a user is overwhelmed with matches or wants to take a break from dating, they can pause Dating and if they decide the app isn't for them, they can opt-out and all their Dating data will be destroyed.
