Dutch Politicians Join Grindr To Pick Up Votes
REUTERS – Two Amsterdam local politicians have uploaded their profiles to Grindr to try and pick up votes for their liberal party ahead of elections later this month. “We are very fond of new technology and new media,” said Jan-Bert Vroege, an openly gay candidate for the D66 party. D66 is a progressive opposition party, which was an early proponent of liberal policies in the Netherlands, including gay marriage, euthanasia and drug tolerance. It ranked third in the most recent national opinion polls.

Holidays: The Busiest Time For Dating Sites
MARKET WATCH – Dec 30 - Zoosk typically sees a 26% increase in signups during the two weeks after Christmas. Grindr had a 15% rise in activity on Thanksgiving and ~30% to 50% increase on Dec. 25. Tinder experiences a 5% to 7% surge in users on Dec. 26. “Hanukkah, Thanksgiving and New Year are when singles around the dinner table think, ‘Maybe it would be better to have a partner,’” says Mark Brooks, a dating-industry analyst. “That’s when they start hitting dating sites in droves and go on dates before the indigestion sets in.” "Family should come first. They’re going to be around for you long after your relationships,” he says. “The trick with holiday dating is to make sure no one feels neglected.”

Grindr’s Performance Issues Could Doom Its Relationships
FORTUNE – Dec 6 – One serious glitch is all users need to abandon one service for another. Just ask the Friendster folks. Grindr's consistent user complaints are creating opportunity for competitors like Jack'd or Scruff. Yosuke Matsuda made Jack'd fast and reliable. 5.4M users registered for the app, 1M log on daily. That's still shy of Grindr's 7M registered users and 1.2M daily active users. But Jack'd began outpacing Grindr this spring, adding 100K monthly active users. Grindr's monthly active user base is growing ~200K over at least seven months.

THE ATLANTIC – Dec 5 – The online dating scene in India is primarily matrimonial sites. Shaadi.com is, intuitively, a wedding arranged via the Internet. 90% of marriages in India still classify as “arranged”. 1 in 8 singles use the matrimonial sites. The online matrimony market is valued at ~$81M with an annual growth rate of 30%. There are 44M Indians who now have smartphones, giving “hookup apps” like Tinder a huge market. Tinder is seeing ~4% percent daily growth in its Indian user base. Grindr has ~11K members in India.

Online Dating Is Popular In Argentina
CLARIN.COM – Dec 2 – According to ComScore Argentina, 6.6% of the ~18K people surveyed in Sep this year visited dating sites. 27% of women were 15-24 years, and 24 % of men 25 -34. "Online dating has become a more attractive alternative," says Mariela Stescobich, Match.com spokeswoman for Latin America. Match.com claims 2.1M members from Argentina and visits grew 185% last year. Popular mobile apps in Argentina are Tinder, Badoo, Down and Grindr.

HUFFINGTON POST – Nov 26 – Joel Simkhai, the founder and CEO of Grindr, believes he has an “opportunity to make a difference.” In 2011 he launched Grindr4Equality, an effort to use the app to help create awareness and organize. Grindr is the only option for men in countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan where gay men can go to jail for being who they are. That ability to connect gay men makes Grindr a powerful organizing tool. ~100K Grindr users signed a petition against Russia's “gay propaganda” law and users helped to raise $107K to stop anti-gay legislation in Singapore.

Grindr Considers Legal Action Over Turkish Ban
STAR OBSERVER – Sep 25 – Grindr has considered threatening the Turkish government with legal action over their ban. The app was blocked by Istanbul’s Criminal Court of Peace this month. Grindr is now working via its geo-targeted advocacy service “Grindr for Equality” with KAOS GL and online LGBTI advocacy group All Out to pressure the Turkish government into lifting the ban.
