A New Kind Of Love Story

Posted on May 3, 2011

Mobile-dating1 AD WEEK – May 3 – Not so long ago, you’d assume that a girl alone at a bar on a Friday night, furiously thumbing her smartphone, had been stood up. Now, thanks to apps like meetMoi NOW, SinglesAroundMe, and Skout, she could just be planning her evening’s assignation. While dating sites sift and sort according to compatibility, apps pre-screen for something else: instant availability. There’s another name for the inefficiency these apps eliminate: courtship. They might dance around it, but what the apps are really offering is the ability to order up sex on demand. One of the pioneering location-based apps is Grindr. Launched in 2009, it allows gay men to locate other nearby users. It claims ~1M users. The developers of Badoo, Facebook’s fastest-growing third-party app, liken its ambiance to a club. Friend.ly makes the search for love a more convivial experience by quizzing users about friends and interests. It has ~4M monthly active users. Among the newer apps is Singlesquare, a Foursquare offshoot launched in Jan.

Mark Brooks: Finally, location aware apps are gaining significant traction. Facebook has driven people to be more willing to share private info. The tech is now mature. Apple has driven the smart phone into ubiquity. iDating will morph considerably now.

Government To Censor iTunes App Store

Posted on March 9, 2011

Itunes_logo SYDNEY MORNING HERALD – Mar 9 - Australians will soon be able to complain about mobile game apps they take offence to and get them removed from app stores such as Apple's iTunes if they're deemed "refused classification". And if mobile game apps are classified anything above MA15+ and the government doesn't introduce an R18+ games classification (which it plans to vote on in July), then any game app rated over MA15+ will also be refused classification. What is unclear, however, is how the Classification Board will classify apps that aren't necessarily games like Grindr.

The Grindr Obsession

Posted on February 18, 2011

Grindr logo PHILLY MAG – Feb 17 – Phone apps like Grindr have really changed the way gay men are meeting up and, in many cases, hooking up. Grindr is by far the most widely-used GPS-based gay hookup, in part, to its availablity on iPhone, iPad and Blackberry. It won the iDate Award for Best Mobile Dating Site last month. Following the receipt of the iDate award, founder and president Joel Simkhai announced that his company, Nearby Buddy Finder is using the established and successful model to launch a site geared toward straight women in coming months. The straight version will include more information about members (like occupation) and it’ll be more searchable and less stripped-down, meeting the demands set by straight women. Looking For Love? Cupid’s Got Apps For That

Posted on February 14, 2011

Omnidate's virtual beach MIAMI HERALD – Feb 14 – The most popular are apps that use Global Positioning System to find a date near your typical hangout spot. Skout, an app for iPhone and Android, claims 3M active users. With an average user age of 25, the free app is more youth friendly than sites like eHarmony and Match.com. Such established sites have yet to incorporate such GPS tags; the idea of getting alerts from strangers who are physically nearby seems creepy and stalker-like to many users, says online dating business consultant Mark Brooks, editor of OnlinePersonalsWatch.com. Still, the category is growing. Grindr, an app for gay men, boasts 1.4M users and 300K log-ons a day, according to Grindr’s founder and CEO, Joel Simkhai. Though GPS-based tagging is this year’s hot trend, other technology-based matchmaking tactics may also facilitate finding the love of your life. For those who are shy, OmniDate.com lets users use an animated avatar of themselves and plops it into an animated chat room on the first date. OmniDate co-founder Ravit Abelman said it has been picked up by several dating sites, including Lavalife, TangoWire, JDate in Europe and the Facebook app Social Connect. She said it has been successful because it’s a way to break the ice beyond a bullet-list profile and lifeless e-mails.

Grindr App Goes Straight

Posted on February 7, 2011

Grindr logo GUARDIAN.CO.UK – Feb 6 – Grindr, the mobile app that helps gay men track their nearest potential date, is launching a new service that will allow women to turn their mobiles into GPS-powered dating tools. Joel Simkhai, Grindr's founder, said he had received tens of thousands of requests from women asking for a straighter, female-friendly version of Grindr. Project X, which will be named in the next few weeks, will be very different to the gay version. "Proximity is less of a turn-on for women than it is for men," said Simkhai. "For gay men just the fact that there is someone 400ft away and gay is interesting." But the new app will incorporate specific features to appeal to women. "For a straight woman, a guy who is 400ft away from her? So what. It happens all the time. We have got to provide more," he said. "Grindr is very photo-centric. Women obviously want to see someone that they might find attractive, but they need to know more than that." FULL ARTICLE @ GUARDIAN.CO.UK

Joel Simkhai, Founder & CEO Of Grindr, The Global Sensation

Posted on December 9, 2010

Grindr Profile View –Joel Simkhai-US OPW INTERVIEW – Dec 9 – Joel has quite a story to tell. He started Grindr on a shoestring budget and has driven the service to become a rip-roaring success. Next, he’s launching a straight version. Here’s my interview with the founder of Grindr. – Mark Brooks

I heard you got Grindr started for $5,000 just 18 months ago and now you’re at over a million users. Tell us more. What is the founding story?
I’ve been using online dating sites and services since I was a teenager. I would go to gay chat rooms and talk to other guys. Early on I wasn’t meeting anyone in those chat rooms but they helped me come out as a gay man. It was a pivotal experience for me.

One of the problems with online dating was location. There was no real emphasis on the people around me. So I was hoping to solve that problem. And that’s what we did with Grindr. Grindr allows you to see who’s sitting right next to you, who’s in the same room, or who’s just down the block. So people can meet very quickly as opposed to spending a lot of time online or on the phone. The idea is go meet them and see what the chemistry is like in person. If there is no chemistry, it is unlikely that there is going to be any kind of long-term relationship.

The 2nd generation iPhone was a big technological advance that made Grindr possible. We found a developer who did it for us as a hobby and we put it on the iTunes App Store. From there word of mouth fueled us and helped us reach over a million users in 180 countries.

Beyond the million users, you have an incredible activity level. Out of those million users, 250,000 of them are active and log in on average 8 times a day and spend an average of 1.3 hours each day using the app. That’s amazing! But what is your ad budget? What kind of ad budget are you working with to generate so much activity?
Our advertising spend is $0. We’ve done some promotional events. But in terms of our acquisition cost for users, we’re fueled by word of mouth and the press we’ve generated which has been organic. Our users are finding Grindr simple, compelling, and fun, and that has resulted in much of our growth. We are live in over 180 out of 196 countries in the world. So we’re global and we haven’t done any translation and that is a testament to the simplicity of the app. You don’t even need to speak English to figure out how to use Grindr.

You mentioned respect of your users. I would like to learn more about how that translates. How does that feel for the users?
We respect our users’ privacy. We don’t ask for their email addresses or their phone numbers because we have the ability to message our users within the app. Also, in terms of the experience, it’s really straightforward. We don’t constantly remind our users to do things.

What is the revenue model? How well is Grindr doing?
The majority of our members use our ad-supported, free version, which is called Grindr. Then we have a paid subscription version with no ads and added features like push notifications and more guys viewable, for $2.99 a month – that’s Grindr Xtra.. We’ve also held over 200 Grindr parties around the world to date. The venues buy Grindr kits and we advertise those parties for them.

How would you say Grindr is different from the likes of Manhunt?
The key differentiator is that Grindr is a location-based, mobile service. You can be anywhere around the world and find guys who are right next to you and meet them immediately. There is no computer required. While you’re out and about living your life normally, you can simply launch Grindr to meet and chat with guys right around you. We are also a non-adult service and we’re firm believers in being able to meet people in a non-sexual environment. We are largely a free service to our users.

I heard you were planning on launching a straight version. When do you think that will go live?
We don’t have a launch date at this point but it is something that we’re hoping to do soon.

Would you launch under the same name or would you launch the straight version as a brand extension?
It will be a brand extension under a different name.

What are your goals for Grindr for 2011?
We’re hoping to continue to grow the community. To do that we will have to be on additional platforms. We have already announced the BlackBerry version of Grindr, which is in the final stages of beta testing and will be available to the public soon. We are also looking at additional mobile platforms, and possibly a desktop version.
