Facebook’s Graph Search Would Make Online Dating Awkward
BUSINESS INSIDER – Apr 2 – When Facebook
announced Graph Search, industry experts said it could kill online
dating. That was before anyone had actually used graph search. Sam
Yagan, CEO of both OkCupid & Match.com
said, "I used graph search and it showed me people who meet my criteria
but that didn't mean I wanted to date those people." Neil Strauss,
author of "The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists,"
said "Facebook is doing a lot of strange things lately to appeal to
shareholders. Allowing guys or marketers to just reach into user's
inboxes is a threat to user loyalty. Sean Suhl, cofounder of Let's Date
agrees, "I would feel awkward about contacting a stranger or friend of a
friend on Facebook for romantic reasons because not everyone on
Facebook is there to meet people. Markus Frind, CEO of POF,
agrees, "Facebook isn't going to kill dating sites. Its all about
intent. If you signup to POF there are millions of people who made the
decision to signup because they want to be a in relationship." Facebook
is already one of the top places people meet and hook up. Dan Slater,
author of "Love in the Time of Algorithms"
points out, "We all know that people have already been using Facebook
for dating, and that Facebook is the biggest online dating site in the
world, even though it doesn't think of itself as an online dating site."

A Great Philosophy On How To Build A Startup
BUSINESS INSIDER – Jan 10 – At the end of the day, it's all about execution, not the idea. So far HowAboutWe is a success, raising $18.5M to date and hitting ~1M users since launching in April 2010. Co-Founder Aaron Schildkrout says it has everything to do with the process. "Brian and I did everything together. We were working 90 hours a week, but if you're not willing to do that, you shouldn't launch a startup. As a company leader you have to work diligently to avoid excessive siloing, and yet the more collaborative your environment is, the more complex your structures have to be. "As CEO you have a number of responsibilities, including making sure you have the right people. Make sure your personal contributions are the overall vision and overall company management. The obvious things are that you want people who are relentlessly driven and smart. Really talented people just don’t like to work inside broken processes. It feels dumb to them. Building a great process is very hard.

OKCupid CEO Shares The Social Media Strategy
BUSINESS INSIDER – Sep 27 – OkCupid has become incredibly popular in recent years. The tipping point was in 2009, when a strong social media strategy helped it gain traction, says CEO and Co-Founder Sam Yagan. One of the best ways to grow a business is to expand the possible user base. OkCupid tries to reach a broad audience with its blog by choosing interesting topics and great graphs that provide information as well as entertainment. OkCupid only has 18,083 Twitter followers and 12,860 Facebook page likes, which is nothing compared to how many people comment on its blog. Social media is just one piece of the puzzle. “There’s a rule of thumb in marketing that you have to have seven ad impressions before someone actually takes an action," says Yagan. "It’s reading an article on Facebook; it’s hearing the story on the news; it’s hearing from one of your friends who’s using OkCupid."
