Posted on October 23, 2018

Bumble yael cohen braunFORBES – Oct 23 – When Yael Cohen Braun's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, she made a shirt for her mom that said "Fuck Cancer." She also launched her judgment-free digital media property Motherlucker. Dating app Bumble today announced that Cohen Braun has joined the team as a senior advisor and that they have acquired the assets of Motherlucker. Blue’s Founders Learned To Make Their Startup Standout In A Crowded Market

Posted on September 28, 2018

Blue screenshotsFORBES – Sep 28 – Tai Tran, 25, Jesse Salas, 24, and Benna Iqbal, 25, created the app called Blue. Blue aims to make dating more conversational both online and offline through features like smart icebreakers and relationship literacy.

Q: What was the driving factor in developing Blue?
Tai Tran: To have a human-centered focus in online dating. One of our core features is Instant Match Live, where we ask three questions to users at 7 P.M. If two users respond the same way, they will receive each other as an Instant Match.

Q: How do you suppress bad behaviors and promote good ones?
A: To promote more positive behavior, we introduced a "smart ice-breaker" which gives users more control over how conversations start. Until both members answer the icebreaker, you can't begin to chatting with your match.

Lumen Is ‘Tinder For Seniors’ And It Just Launched

Posted on September 17, 2018

Lumen iphone screenshotsFORBES – Sep 16 – Lumen is the latest venture in Andrey Andreev's career with co-founders, Antoine Argouges and Charly Lester. Over-50's are Lumen's desired clientele. Andreev sees a massive mobile market for Lumen; he has invested +$4.5M in the app. All members are required to upload a selfie as part of the verification process, and an algorithm authenticates this against the other profile images provided. A nice touch and a tragic sign of the times and issues with online dating. Lumen uses AI and must have a minimum of three images on a profile. Lumen is available now on iOS and Android in the UK only but will be available internationally soon.

Ghosting – Dating’s Billion Dollar Problem

Posted on August 29, 2018

Ghosting1FORBES – Aug 28 – Ghosting is where one person completely ceases communication with the other without any explanation. According to a survey of Plenty of Fish users, 78% admitted to being ghosted at least once. Some people swipe on dating apps purely for the instant dopamine-hit of getting a match yet rarely (if at all) convert these matches to conversations. In the dating industry, these users are known as 'collectors' – with some users racking up thousands of matches. Ghosting is having a material impact on users' experience and ultimately their perception of online dating, both of which make it a threat to the industry.

The fund, which Bumble says it has committed ~$1M to so far, will invest checks from $5k to $250k in companies that primarily serve women, with a focus on female founders from diverse backgrounds. Bumble's fund has already made commitments to a handful of businesses on an ad hoc basis. Those include prenatal and postpartum healthcare company Mahmee, beauty startup BeautyCon and swimwear startup Sofia Los Angeles, which was a winner of a pitch competition Bumble put on in the spring. Bumble also has invested in several female-focused investment funds including Female Founders Fund and Cleo Capital.

4 Lessons Bumble Can Teach Any Entrepreneur

Posted on July 25, 2018

Bumble logo whiteFORBES – July 25 – After Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd left Tinder, which she also co-founded, she was determined to change the online dating game, and founded the women-empowering dating app that, while similar to Tinder in its simple photo-swiping functionality, differs from it in one very interesting way – Bumble requires the woman to make the first move.

  1. Go against the grain
It's better to be different and appeal to a smaller segment than to be like everyone else and only get a tiny piece of the pie.
  2. Keep it simple
  3. Expand gradually
A lot of companies expand too quickly, often to their own detriment. Know whether your ideas for additional products or services will even hit the mark with your audience before you invest the time and money in them.
  4. Stay in front of your audience

Women Thrive At The Bumble Hive

Posted on July 5, 2018

Bumble headquartersFORBES – July 4 – Launched in late 2014, by former Tinder co-founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble entered the market as an app to change the way people date online by putting women first. Today, the app has recorded 500M "first moves" and is valued at ~$1B. Bumble's headquarters in Austin is nicknamed "The Hive". Beyond the brick and mortar, and the office perks, Bumble also made it a priority to put into place fairly progressive policies for its employees – which now total 80 worldwide, with 85% being female. To best accommodate working women, the office maintains a flexible understanding of work hours and the ability for parents to bring children to the office as needed. They allow for "micro-agility" during the day to deal with the stuff that life just brings – meeting the plumber, running to a doctor’s appointment without having to take PTO.

Why Chappy Thinks Its The Best Gay Dating App

Posted on July 2, 2018

Chappy screenshotsFORBES – June 30 – Founded in 2017, Chappy aims to be a judgment-free space. It takes away the focus on height, weight and ethnicity, which have become the primary drivers for getting a match. Sam Dumas, Chappy's head of brand, discuses how the app stands alone, the goals it is trying to achieve and how online dating can go far beyond a one-time hook-up.

Q: How would you describe Chappy?
A: We're a dating app at our core, but represent so much more. We provide an inclusive, kind and respectful network for gay men to form meaningful connections.

Q: Who would you say is your biggest competition in the gay dating space?
A: I truly believe that we stand alone.

Q: What is the purpose of "The Chappy Pledge," and how are you regulating the actions of users?
A: It is our commitment to changing the way people treat each other online.

Q: How would you describe the stigma associated with gay dating apps, and why do you think it is so pervasive?
A: The market is oversaturated with one-sided hookup driven apps. At Chappy we are breaking down the perception that gay men are only looking for one thing. We are certainly fighting against the stigma by recognizing that gay men are looking for more meaningful connections, whatever that may be for the individual.

Q: Where do you see Chappy in the next five years, and how are you looking to get there?
A: This is just the beginning for Chappy. Our main focus right now is on the U.S. market, but we have plans to expand internationally in the near future.
