Instant Chemistry Calculates Romantic Chemistry Through Genetics

Posted on July 24, 2015

Instantchemistry logoFORBES – July 23 - Instant Chemistry helps couples understand the science behind their attraction. The site was founded in 2013 by Ron Gonzalez, who has a PhD in neuroscience. In the early days, Instant Chemistry worked with a dating site Singledout. They ended this partnership 8 months later. Gonzales doesn't regret. He received several emails from couples asking if they could use his test to determine whether they are a good match. Instant Chemistry’s kit tests for three Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) immune system genes and four behavioral genetic variants. It also includes a psychological assessment. Although the market for DNA testing for love hasn’t yet been proven, Instant Chemistry’s growing customer base gives Gonzalez high hopes.

Jiayuan Committed To Buyout

Posted on July 14, 2015

Jiayuan logo new Aug 13FORBES – July 13 - Jiayuan is still committed to the privatization process that could end with its departure from New York and re-listing of its shares in its home China market. The reason is that investors are far more likely to get excited about a stock when they’re familiar with its name and business model, giving it a better valuation than it would get from less familiar buyers in overseas markets. That's why most companies choose to make their primary listings in their home stock markets.

A Chinese Policeman Builds The World’s Top Gay Dating App – Blued

Posted on May 25, 2015

Blued founderFORBES – May 25 – Ma Baoli, who goes by the alias Geng Le, had been a policeman in the northern Hebei province for almost 20 years. He was forced to quit the job in 2012, when people found out he had secretly moderated Danlan, a gay website, at night. China has no anti- discrimination law in place, meaning a lot of people, especially those working for government, choose to hide their sexual orientation. Ma Baoli started Blued, a dating app similar to Grindr. Now Blued boasts ~20M users, including ~6M abroad. Last year Ma raised $30M at a valuation of $300M. This year he will start talking to investors for a new round. International expansion is on his mind. The goal is listing on the NASDAQ within five years.

Waltzz Dating App: India’s Take On Tinder

Posted on April 28, 2015

Waltzz logoFORBES – Apr 27 – India has always been a nation of matchmakers. In the 90s, matchmaking went online with Shaadi.com. Waltzz is a new app that is something between Tinder and Shaadi. Waltzz has several safety features, including requests for LinkedIn, Facebook, phone and email verifications; screenshots are disabled, and last names are eliminated from user profiles. Once uploaded, profiles are verified through a keyword scan for any abusive or unhealthy language in comments sections. There’s also a quick quality control check on the photos that users have uploaded.

AshleyMadison.com Keeps Making Money

Posted on February 3, 2015

Ashleymadison logo new apr 2010FORBES – Feb 9 – Avid Life Media is a privately held Toronto holding company that owns Ashley Madison, CougarLife and other dating sites. Avid Life Media grossed $115M for 2014, up 45% from the $78M it grossed in 2013. Pretax profits will come in at $55M. Worldwide, Ashley Madison has had 31M total users over its lifetime, with 6.8M active users. CEO Noel Biderman says his company is worth $1B. Match.com is worth $3.8B, or 12 times estimated 2015 operating earnings, and Tinder $1.3B, or 18 times estimated earnings. A sale would be a healthy but not crazy-big payday for Biderman. He owns just over 10% of the firm after selling off most of it in a $40M round in 2007. Ashley Madison launched in Israel, Hong Kong, Turkey and India in 2014 and is launching next in Thailand, with plans afoot for Russia, Ukraine and Nigeria.

How She Did It: Q&A With Alexandra Chong On Founding Lulu

Posted on November 21, 2014

Lulu Alexandra ChongFORBES – Nov 20 – Alexandra Chong is the Founder & CEO of Lulu, the provocative female app that allows users to rate men.

Q: What inspired you?
A: I graduated with a law degree from LSE, and I went to work in the legal department of a music licensing start-up. I quickly realized I wanted to start my own business. I went to a brunch with a group of girls after Valentine’s Day. It was a table of just women sharing stories about guys. I concluded that women needed their own network for sharing with other women.

Q: What were some of the tactics you used to get Lulu off the ground fast?
A: We went directly to our customers. College sororities and fraternities seemed like a great fit, so we ran a beta at two colleges in Fl. Within just a few weeks, we had 40% of girls and 60% guys on a campus on Lulu!

Q: What were some of the challenges you faced?
A: I don’t have a technical background, so I needed a very strong technical lead. Our CTO, Hassan Chahrour, was one of my first hires.

Q: What do you see as the future of dating and the emergence of accompanying tools, in particular?
A: Online dating is now the norm. We hear from users that dating without a reference is a scary thing. Lulu provides a critical information layer for the dating industry.

Q: What successes have you achieved so far at Lulu?
A: We’ve reached millions of girls in the US, including one in four US college girls. We hit #1 in the App Store in Brazil just one week after launch.

Q: Do you have any advice for other professionals aspiring to start their own business?
A: It all starts with the team. Find people that are smarter than you who you believe in and want to work with.

Wyldfire: A Dating App Inspired By Tinder, Made For Women

Posted on July 23, 2014

Wyldfire logoFORBES – July 22 – Brian Freeman and Andrew White started Wyldfire, a new dating app that is a lot like Tinder. “Without Tinder, we wouldn’t exist,” says Freeman. “We’ve taken their idea and spun off something we think is super highly valuable off the core concept.” They surveyed female friends about their experiences with online dating, who told them the biggest drawback was the explicit come-ons they received from guys. Wyldfire is an app that men could only join if invited by a woman member. Chats are limited to 20 messages. Wyldfire only has ~ 6K users so far but 60% of them are women.
