What Was the First Online Dating Site?

Matchcom original logoFOX BUSINESS – June 15 – Gary Kremen founded the Match.com as one of several online classified ad businesses he planned to develop. The idea for the revolutionary platform came to Gary Kremen while he was in the shower. "I thought it would be really interesting to use the Internet for relationships, and to do it right," he said. By 1994, he owned the domain Match.com. The website went live in April of 1995. In 1997 Match was sold for $7M to Cendant, a Connecticut consumer-services company. In 1999, IAC acquired Match.

Mark Brooks: Not quite true. Webpersonals was started by Andrew Conru in 1994, and sold to the company that would become Lavalife in Canada. Webpersonals was the first. Not Match.com. Dr Conru then went on to start FriendFinder in 1996.

During Coronavirus Lockdown, Tinder Surpasses Bumble, OkCupid and Hinge Downloads

Dating app generalFOX BUSINESS – Mar 25 – While many businesses have suffered dramatically under the coronavirus, its been a great week for Tinder, which saw an increase in first-time installations of the app in the U.S., according to Sensor Tower. First-time installs of Tinder were up 13% last week in the U.S. compared to the week of March 2, but were down 5% worldwide for the same comparison period. Bumble's downloads fell 10% in the U.S. and 11% worldwide, Hinge downloads fell 7% in the U.S. and 12% worldwide, and OkCupid fell 16% in U.S. and down 20% worldwide.

Senior Dating App Stitch Offers More Than Love

Stitch logoFOX BUSINESS – Mar 8 – Stitch, an online community for singles over the age of 50, was launched in 2014 and is headquartered in Sydney. The site offers three types of memberships: basic, community and community+. The basic membership is free, the community membership costs $60 per year and the community+ type, which allows additional profile browsing, starts at $15 per month. Currently, the app has 1K members. "Lonely people over the age of 60 can see the same health effects as smoking 15 cigarettes a day," said Andrew Dowling, the founder and CEO of Stitch.

Tinder Loophole Allows Users to Reappear as Suggestions After Being Rejected

Tinder yes or noFOX BUSINESS – Feb 14 – The loophole allows users to delete and remake their profiles, giving them a second chance to reappear as suggestions for people who previously "swiped left" on their profiles. One Twitter user wrote directly to Tinder on the social media site in April, saying, "Hi Tinder! I would like an explanation as to why a profile that I've swiped left on at least 10 times in the past keeps reappearing. I've tried to report it through the app to no avail." Tinder did not respond to the tweet.

College Students Pay Tuition by Hooking up With Sugar Daddies and Mommas

Of that, 62%, or 2.48M, are students in the U.S, according to the company. The site recently released its list of schools nationwide with the largest growth in new profiles. The annual list has been published as millions of Americans owe $1.5 trillion in student loan debt. Students are the top profession of "sugar babies" and 30% of sugar babies use gifts from sugar daddies and mommies to pay for tuition and other school-related expenses. Georgia State University, University of Central Florida and the University of Alabama claimed the top three spots on SeekingArrangment Sugar University.

Former Cape Coral Mayor Creates Dating Site to Combat Domestic Violence

Youreamatch logoFOX4NOW – Dec 17 – Former Cape Coral mayor, Marni Sawicki launches a new dating site aimed to combat the issue of domestic violence by providing users with additional background information. "I absolutely believe the online dating sites should be doing more to protect their users," said Marni Sawicki. Sawicki and her business partner launched You're A Match, which allows survivors to anonymously post police reports, restraining orders, convictions and other verifiable documents. She says that of the 3M restraining orders reported each year, only 1M are uploaded to the FBI's crime database. The site aims to provide a safer dating experience and relies heavily on survivor engagement.

Dozens of remote consultants – from a stylist, to a photo analyst, to an app-swiper – work together to curate and manage users online dating profiles for them. They even have a ghostwriters, who flirts with their matches on their behalf. The end goal is to set up a date for their clients.

IAC’s Diller: Pushback Over Match Spinoff Will Iron Itself out

Iac barry diller 2019FOX BUSINESS – Oct 16 – IAC Chairman Barry Diller said that investor pushback over the spinoff of Match Group is inevitable but will ultimately get "solved." Last week IAC/InterActiveCorp announced plans to spin off all of its shares in Match to IAC stockholders. The company owns ~80% of Match. "Match is a cash flow machine. So we would not cause indebtedness at Match to be beyond any kind of rational threshold," he said.

Barry Diller: Facebook Is No Match for Match.com

He said that if a company focuses on one thing, it will tend to do it better than others who are "dabbling." "The truth is we have not yet seen competition from Facebook," Diller said. "It's our business. For them, it's a little side business."
