Jewish Dating App JCrush Exposed User Data and Private Messages
TECH CRUNCH – June 4 – A security lapse at JCrush left a database open without a password, exposing sensitive user records and private messages to anyone who knew where to look. None of the data was encrypted. The records contained the user's name, gender, email address, IP address and geolocation, as well as their city, state and country, date of birth, sexual preferences, religious denomination and photos they use on JCrush. The records also show the user's Facebook ID, which points directly to their Facebook profile. It also includes the access token, which can be used to take over a JCrush user's account without needing their password. JCrush's parent company, Northsight Capital, said it was "aware" of the situation and "secured the database immediately when the problem occurred."

For example, Google has a full suite of lightweight "Go"-branded apps, like Google Go, Gmail Go, Files Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go and Google Assistant Go. There's also Facebook Lite, Instagram Lite, Messenger Lite, Twitter Lite, Uber Lite, Spotify Lite and even TikTok Lite. The company didn't share an exact launch date for Tinder Lite, but, according to Match Group CEO Mandy Ginsberg, the app is "coming soon."

TECH CRUNCH – May 1 – Facebook built Dating to be privacy-safe, hoping to avoid the awkwardness of friends or family checking out users' romance profile. Dating brings with it a new feature called Secret Crush. Users can choose up to 9 friends they like-like. Badoo & Bumble’s “Private Detector” Uses AI to Detect Dick Pics
TECH CRUNCH – Apr 25 – "Private Detector" feature will identify inappropriate photos and label them as such in chat, giving users the option to view the photo or report the user. Badoo CEO Andrey Andreev opted to have his team build the tech in-house. The company claims 98% accuracy. This feature fits into something Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd has been promoting – safe online dating for women with less harassment. Wolfe Herd has started approaching the issue of unsolicited illicit photos from a legislative track as well. She has been working with the Texas state legislature to pass a bill that makes it illegal to send clearly unsolicited lewd photos. The "Private Detector" functionality goes live in June on Bumble as well as on Badoo, Chappy and Lumen.

Tinder Becomes the Top-grossing, Non-game App in Q1 2019
TECH CRUNCH – Apr 12 – For the first time in years, Netflix is no longer the top grossing, non-game mobile app. That title now goes to Tinder. The change in position is not surprising, given Netflix's decision in December to stop paying the so-called "Apple tax." Netflix no longer allows new users to sign up and subscribe to its service through its app. Now, instead of giving up its 15 – 30% cut of subscription revenue, new users have to sign up through Netflix's website. Tinder saw revenue grow by 42% YOY to reach $260.7M, up from $183M in Q1 2018.
France’s Tax on Tech Giants Passes First Vote
TECH CRUNCH – Apr 10 – The lower house of the French parliament has voted in favor of the new tax on tech giants. Big tech companies that generate significant revenue in France will be taxed on their revenue generated in France. Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has been lobbying other European countries so that big tech companies would stop optimizing their European corporate structure to lower their effective tax rate. This tax is specifically designed for tech companies in two categories – marketplace (Amazon, Uber, Airbnb) and advertising (Facebook, Google, Criteo). France expects to generate €400M in revenue with this new tax in 2019.
