Single Mom Used OKCupid To Make Friends

Posted on July 21, 2014

Okcupid logo aktualniTHE GLOBE AND MAIL – July 17 – Solmes, a single mother used OkCupid to meet other single mothers. She scoured through profiles, looking for women who had the highest compatibility index with her, and then messaged them. Looking for new girlfriends later in life is a lot like dating. Websites such as GirlFriendCircles.com, a “dating site for women finding friends,” tap into our tendency to hit it off with people who are substantially like us. A Yale study published this week found that we make friends with people who are genetically similar to us. Shasta Nelson, started GirlFriendCircles.com in 2009. The site now counts 40K member.

‘No Asian. No Indian’: Picky Dater Or Racist Dater?

Posted on February 24, 2012

Fastlife logo newTHE GLOBE AND MAIL – Feb 23 – Racial filtering is alive and well on mainstream dating and hookup sites, which give users the option of checking ethnic preferences alongside ideal body types and social habits like smoking and drinking. While most critics agree that the ethnicity checkbox is vastly preferable to specifying 'No Asians,' they disagree about whether the option is a step backward. Is it any different than hunting through niche sites like Shaadi or JDate? Grindr acknowledged that users can list race in their preferences, but can be banned for posting material "perceived to incite racism". "We also encourage our users to state what they are looking for as opposed to what they are not looking for." A dating poll of 2K Lavalife users found that 74% of women surveyed said ethnicity affected their dating decisions, compared with 49% of men. "Men are more open to meeting people from different communities. They tend to concentrate on physical aspects whereas women are much more interested in lifestyle and background," said Justin Parfitt, CEO of speed-dating company FastLife International. "People should be free to have sex or not have sex with anyone they want", argued Harry Reis, a psychology professor at the University of Rochester who co-authored a review of 400 studies on online dating. "In my estimation, it is fine (although self-limiting) to be racist with regard to sexual preferences", he said. "Throw out the checklist," Mr. Parfitt advises. "What you think you want and where you end up finding chemistry are often two very different things."

Online Dating and Politics Don’t Mix: Study

Posted on September 21, 2011

Onlinedatingwoman1 THE GLOBE AND MAIL – Sep 20 - People are more likely to reveal they are overweight than divulge their political stripes on online dating sites, according to a new American study. Sifting through 2,944 randomly sampled online dating profiles, only 14% of users stated their “political interests." Older daters as well as those with higher levels of income and education were more likely to divulge their political leanings. So were men, with women 8% less likely to report a political bent.

Shaadi.com, A 20-million-strong Indian Matrimonial Site

Posted on August 9, 2010

Shaadi logo THE GLOBE AND MAIL – Aug 6 – Unlike Lavalife and eHarmony users, members on sites such as Shaadi.com often have a parent looking over their shoulder – if not running their profile outright. About 30% of the Canadian profiles on Shaadi are made by parents for their sons and daughters – and scrutinized routinely. Among other criteria, the site lets members search by community, religion, caste and sub caste. The company recently teamed up with FastLife International, which organizes speed dating and singles' events around the world. About two years ago, FastLife launched events for Hindus, Christians and Jews, as well as East Asians. For this community, they host four events monthly in Toronto and two a month in Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa.

Radar Love

Posted on September 18, 2009
Location dating THE GLOBE AND MAIL – Sep 18 - Mobile dating apps such as Skout and Are You Interested let users download software onto their phones that alerts them when a potential match is within a few hundred metres. The pioneer of GPS dating was Lovegety, which originated in Japan in 1998 and notified users if a match was nearby by vibrating their cellphones. Lovegety inspired Bluedating, spontaneous matchmaking via Bluetooth. Soon after came “geosocial” networking services such as Loopt and Brightkite.com, which allow people to keep track of friends and explore social communities around their favourite venues. Even though the apps are all explicitly opt-in, they've raised safety concerns. With stalker risks in mind, most will only reveal the distance between users, not their exact location. They also let users block others if they become pesky.

Mark Brooks: It will take a major iDating site to integrate LBS before Location Based Dating will really take off.
