The Meet Group: Live Streaming Can Ease Loneliness

Posted on December 12, 2018

Themetgroup logoDOWNLOAD – Dec 11 – In a recent study, Cigna, the health insurance provider, concluded that loneliness is an epidemic afflicting most Americans, but that Generation Z (18-22) and Millennials (23-37) suffer from feelings of disconnection the most. The study also found that those who engaged in frequent meaningful interactions were less lonely and those who did it daily felt even less isolated. The Meet Group, which owns social dating apps MeetMe, Skout, Tagged and LOVOO, was curious to see if the Live video chat component of its MeetMe app could make its users feel more connected. The company sent out a survey to MeetMe users, and of the 6K respondents, 70% reported that using the Live video feature very often made them feel less lonely. On average, as of Q3 2018, the platform had 117K broadcasters each day with an average of ~25M minutes spent in video daily in October.

900,000 Reasons To Notice The Meet Group

Posted on October 30, 2018

Themetgroup logoTHE MOTLEY FOOL – Oct 30 – The Meet Group has a hot live-streaming platform and momentum for its established and acquired social discovery and online dating apps. Its stock is trading 46% higher in 2018. The difference maker at The Meet Group is a video business that didn't even exist a year ago. Earlier this month, The Meet Group revealed that it attracted a daily average of 900K users in Sep to its live-streaming offering, and on a typical day 125K users are broadcasting live video content. Revenue from the platform is now running at an annualized clip of $48M, up from a $42M pace back in August. The Meet Group wasn't generating any revenue in this niche a year ago. Analysts are gradually starting to notice its performance. Darren Aftahi at Roth Capital boosted his price target on the shares to $6.75 earlier this month.

Fascinating Interview With Geoff Cook, CEO Of Meet Group

Posted on September 3, 2018

OPW INTERVIEW – Sep 3 – Meet Group has acquired Skout, Tagged and Lovoo, and has added video, in similar fashion to Momo, in the last year. Fascinating! I asked Geoff how the integrations are coming together, and monetizing.

Meet Group is ahead of schedule for enabling video, and are finding that audiences across their various geographic markets are very similar in terms of their behavior around video. Livestreaming really fits the dating context well, and actually helps solves a particular core problem with Internet dating. Many males and females are left out with Internet dating apps. They come to a dating platform to feel less lonely, and end up feeling more lonely. However, on Meet Group dating services, “livestreaming video enables them to replace feelings of loneliness with feelings of entertainment where they can actually engage with the broadcaster.” But its not all about entertainment. 56% of video users report that they meet in real life.

“Video monetizes extraordinarily well.” Meet Group went from zero revenue from ‘gifts’ to video broadcasters to a $37 million run-rate business from video gifts by July 2018. This is mainly from MeetMe and Skout. Meanwhile, Lovoo has been experimenting with bitcoin, but this is very fledgling and not a huge contributor to revenues yet.

Meet Group’s Link-up Site Veers Into Live Streaming Video And Sees Its Stock Jump

Posted on August 27, 2018

Themetgroup logoPHILLY.COM – Aug 25 – Meet Group is like China's Momo, with its live streaming video chat. Live streaming on its Quick app now attracts ~850K of its 4M paid and premium-feature free users daily. Those subscription and "gift" payments account for a quarter of Meet Group's revenues. By the end of the year, Meet Group plans to offer a new video product, Battle, that will enable two or more competing performers to register paid gifts as signs of favor from viewers, a kind of interactive mobile America's Got Talent. Last year, Meet Group bought Germany-based Lovoo, a five-year-old, mostly European dating app funded by subscriptions, purchases and ads, for $70M in cash, plus up to $5M in sales bonuses. That purchase boosted Meet Group sales by $32M. In 2016, Meet acquired IfWe for $60M and Skout for $52M. In 2011 it merged with Quepasa, a Latin America-focused, publicly traded social-media company.
