Gay Dating App Growlr is Now Owned by Straight People

Posted on March 12, 2019

Growlr logoOUT.COM – Mar 12 – After being founded in 2010 by Coley Cummiskey and becoming a "by bears, for bears" social media app, Growlr is now part of The Meet Group. Its new owners already have big plans for the platform, namely introducing livestreaming by the end of the year. The Meet Group plans to invest in marketing and grow the team (it had before just been Cummiskey and his husband Frank Rollins). Growlr is The Meet Group's fourth purchase in three years. Cummiskey and his husband will stay on with Growlr for at least a year, as per their contracts.

Why The Meet Group Bought Gay Dating App Growlr

Posted on March 8, 2019

The Meet Group Geoff CookPHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL – Mar 8 – The Meet Group acquired gay dating app Growlr for $11.8M this week. Growlr will join Meet's existing portfolio of MeetMe, Skout, Tagged and Lovoo. Meet announced the Growlr acquisition ahead of its Q4 and full year 2018 earnings call, when it saw $178.6M in total revenue, a 44% jump from 2017. Meet's been in talks with Growlr for more than a year, and Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group, said the acquisition is part of its goal to expand into different audiences it doesn't already serve. The app, which counts ~200K global daily active users, came at a good value, he added, and once Meet integrates its live video features into Growlr, he believes it will be the first gay dating app in the country to do so and growth should follow. Growlr has just two employees who will join Meet.

The Meet Group Stock Has a Lot to Prove This Week

Posted on March 6, 2019

Themetgroup logoTHE MOTLEY FOOL – Mar 6 – Shares of The Meet Group have more than doubled over the past year, hitting fresh highs earlier this week. The Meet Group is facing its first big test of 2019 this week when it reports Q4 financial results today. The Meet Group stock was already rolling — up 64% in 2018 — when it announced in early January that revenue soared 30% to hit $52.3M in the Q4 that ended a week earlier. Earlier guidance was calling for just $47.8M to $48.8M on the top line. Streaming video has been a huge component of The Meet Group's growth since the latter half of 2016, but the real needle mover these days is Battles, where a pair of live-streaming users square off in everything from joke-telling to dancing. Virtual gifts dictate the winner, and that provides a juicy financial incentive for members to engage others in more Battles. By late last year, an average of 30K Battles were taking place on a typical day.

Tycoons of Love: The Men Who Run Online Dating

Posted on February 16, 2019

THINKNUM – Feb 16 – The world of dating apps is dominated by four companies – Match Group, The Meet Group, Badoo and Spark. Here are the four men behind these companies.

Barry diller2Match Group – Barry Diller
Born in San Fran in 1942, 77 year-old Barry Diller is Chairman and Senior Executive of IAC and Expedia. Diller married fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg in 2001 and is now estimated to be worth $3.3B. He also created the Fox Broadcasting Company and USA Broadcasting. On top of creating his own empire in media, Diller's influence has spread to those who he mentored – colloquially called the "Killer Dillers" – which included former Disney Chairman & CEO Michael Eisner and Dawn Leslie Steel, one of the first woman to become the head of a major movie studio.

Geoff cookThe Meet Group – Geoff Cook
Geoff isn't The Meet Group's founder. That honor goes to his younger brother and sister, Dave and Catherine Cook. Dave and Catherine created myYearbook in 2005 as a place for ex-classmates to meet up online. Geoff became the company's power player after investing $250K that he made from his EssayEdge and ResumeEdge startups he created in his Harvard dorm room.

Andrey andreevBadoo – Andrey Andreev
Born in February 1974 in Moscow, Russia, Andreev founded Badoo, SpyLog, Begun, and Mamba. He also famously convinced ex-Tinder exec Whitney Wolfe Herd to create Bumble, of which Badoo is a 79% owner. Andreev was recently listed by Forbes as one of the world's richest people, estimated to be worth $1.5B.

Affinitas Jeronimo Folgueira for interviewSpark Networks – Jeronimo Folgueira
Before taking over Spark in 2017, Jeronimo was a Managing Director at Betfair plc (now Paddy Power plc). The Columbia Business School grad took over the reigns of all of Spark Networks SE when JDate and Christian Mingle-focused Spark merged with Affinitas GmbH.

Q&A With Catherine Cook Connelly, Co-Founder and VP Brand Strategy, The Meet Group

Posted on February 16, 2019

The meet group catherine cookMARKETING TECHNOLOGY INSIGHTS – Feb 15 – Catherine Cook Connelly, the co-Founder and VP Brand Strategy at The Meet Group spoke at the Mobile Growth Summit 2019 this week. Her session is about how they built Live, their live streaming video feature and why it works so well for their portfolio of apps. "It is the most successful product we have ever launched in the company's history, reaching a $71M annualized revenue run rate in just 15 months of being active," she said.

Q: What was behind your decision to build Live?
A: From watching MOMO and other popular Chinese dating apps, we began to see how live streaming can fill a core product gap in dating apps. We've always thought of our apps as the neighborhood bar, and video is the live entertainment meant to keep people engaged and give them something more to talk about. Our apps  –  LOVOO, MeetMe, Tagged, and Skout –  have ~25M minutes of live video every day, and we have not experienced cannibalization of our core text-based chat. Instead, live video fills the product gaps.

Q: Did you have a monetization model in mind prior to its launch?
A: Yes, we used the monetization model popularized in Eastern live streaming apps that rely on viewers to send gifts to the broadcaster. The model has taken off with our users because streamers have an incentive to make interesting streams. We're introducing new products such as Battles, which brings an exciting competitive dynamic to Live. The feature brings together two live streamers for a live competition, whether it be for best dancer, musician or comedian. Each battle lasts just a few minutes, and the winner is the streamer who earns more diamonds from the audience. On a larger scale, we expect to bring Levels to the platform this year. Levels adds a gamification element to Live by establishing aspirational ranks for users and exclusive benefits to unlock.

Q: It seems like being a "live streamer" is now a formal occupation that can be quite lucrative… can you discuss this phenomenon as you are seeing it unfold firsthand?
A: A few of our streamers have said they plan to quit their jobs or have taken a step back from their previous job to build themselves up as streamers. 20% of our streamers consider themselves full-time live streamers.

Dating Apps Look to Live Video as a Way to Boost Interaction

Posted on February 15, 2019

The Meet Group Geoff CookCHEDDAR – Feb 14 – In the push to attract more use, dating platforms are adding features like live video, games, and credits that can boost users' profile. Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group, talks about their live streaming feature. "Live streaming fits very well into dating," he says. "I find live video so powerful because you can actually get a sense of who a person is before your date." He also added: "More than half of our users met in real life." Full video.

How The Meet Group Gets Live-Streaming to Pay Off

Posted on January 17, 2019

Themetgroup logoAD EXCHANGER – Jan 17 – In less than two years, The Meet Group managed to diversify its revenue from a near total dependence on programmatic advertising to a mix of ads, in-app purchases and subscriptions. "90% of our revenue was ad-driven before we started to shift," said Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group. "Now it's ~40% advertising, 60% users pay." In late 2016, The Meet Group built a live-streaming video business modeled after Momo, a Chinese dating app which was able to make ~$200M per quarter within a year of introducing live video into its platform. In the 15 months since The Meet Group launched live-streaming video, annualized video revenue alone is ~$70M. "~20% of our daily users and as many as half of our monthly active users spend 20 minutes a day watching live streams," Geoff Cook says.
