Serial Litigator Targets Major Dating Apps Over Biometrics

Posted on November 11, 2024

LawsuitOPW – Michael Massel, a serial litigator based in Illinois, has become known for his prolific use of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) to file class-action lawsuits against some of the largest players in online dating. Massel's recent suits target prominent platforms like Millionaire Match, Victoria Milan, and Luxy. Massel's lawsuits allege these companies collected, stored, and utilized sensitive biometric data, such as facial scans, without securing explicit user consent or adequately disclosing data usage and retention policies. Under BIPA, companies must obtain clear, informed consent before collecting biometric data. Fines are up to $5,000 per violation. Beyond the dating industry, Massel has expanded his litigation efforts to other sectors, filing lawsuits against companies like Zengo, Coinbase, CoinZoom, PaySec USA, Steak 'n Shake, and Foris Dax.

Posted on October 10, 2024

Victoriamilan logoTOP CLASS ACTIONS – Plaintiff Michael Massel has filed a class action lawsuit against Victoria Milan, a dating app for people seeking discreet relationships, in Illinois federal court. Victoria Milan allegedly failed to inform users about data storage practices or obtain written consent. Massel seeks damages and a jury trial on behalf of Illinois users affected over the past five years, citing risks of identity theft and unauthorized tracking due to compromised biometric data.

Posted on March 29, 2011

Victoriamilan logo ICE NEWS – Mar 28 – Victoria Milan, a dating site which encourages married people to have affairs has prompted a record number of complaints to the advertising ombudsman in Sweden. Norwegian company Victoria Milan has introduced a billboard campaign in Stockholm, with posters reading: “Are you married? Liven up your life – find an affair”. “I understand that people react. Mark Brooks: A growing number of dating sites are focusing on this niche. Which is both good, and bad. It's bad because, it's a shame the institution of marriage is being eroded, and people are encouraged to lie to their spouses. It's good because, it's better cheaters are NOT on mainstream dating sites. They need to clarify on their marital status up front, not 3 months into dating. 'Oh, btw, I'm married.' Ick.
