Online Dating For The Wealthy

Posted on June 24, 2010

Gray&farrar logo FINANCIAL TIMES – June 23 - Gray & Farrar is a matchmaking service for wealthy people in London’s affluent Mayfair. According to Julie Ferman, a Los Angeles matchmaker, such specialised agencies are a US phenomenon now spreading across the world. At one end of the spectrum are websites such as SeekingMillionaire.com or DateaMillionaire.com, where men sign up for $25,000 or $50,000 and women pay nothing. A more traditional matchmaking service, Seventy Thirty, established in 2004, requires that both male and female members have assets worth £1m. It charges yearly fees of £10,000. Dating services aimed at the wealthy are not restricted to heterosexual singles. Patrick Perrine runs myPartner.com, a gay matchmaking service that charges clients between $5,000 and $30,000. Mark Brooks, a consultant to internet dating and matchmaking companies, advises potential daters to do some research before they part with their cash. “It’s easy to start a matchmaking company,” he says. “If you are putting out serious coin, you need serious levels of service.” He suggests that prospective clients find out how many people are on the dating agency’s database, and meet their assigned matchmaker before signing up. “It’s easy to get lulled into paying by the sales pitch,” he says. Chinese Website Runs Competition To Find Brides For Millionaires

Posted on June 24, 2010

Jiayuan logo new TELEGRAPH.CO.UK – June 23 - The competition, run by jiayuan.com,
has attracted huge attention in China where online dating is becoming
one of the internet's fastest-growing and most competitive industries,
expected to be worth £120m this year. Hopefuls from as far afield as
Vancouver, Singapore, New York and Paris flew in to China last weekend
to join local girls in the first round of auditions which saw an
initial selection of 2,600 successful applicants being assessed on the
basis of their weight, figures, education and age. The latest
competition from Jiayuan.com is also an exercise in shock-marketing
intended to boost online registrations in the fiercely competitive
online dating business, boosted in part by the shortage of girls in
China caused by the one-child policy and the cultural preference for
sons. Although profits are still relatively small, the industry is
predicting it will attract 140m registrations by the end of this year
according to a report by the iResearch internet consultancy. FULL ARTICLE @ TELEGRAPH.CO.UK

Mark Brooks: Baihe and Zhenai are the top two competitors to Jiayuan. Interviews with their Founder/CEOs can be found here for Baihe, and here for Zhenai.

Posted on June 21, 2010

Sparknetworks ABC NEWS – June 18 – Spark boasts 32 dating sites in all. Adam Berger,
CEO of the Spark Networks, calls it "niche" dating. "Niche dating makes
people instantly feel comfortable," said Berger. "They're among people

State Tells Great Expectations To Get Real In Matchmaking

Posted on June 21, 2010

Greatexpectations.net logo SEATTLE PI – June 18 – They came in search of love, and Great Expectations told them it had thousands of potential mates just waiting to meet them. So the lonelyhearts shelled out thousands of dollars. Then they waited for love that never came. That's the story reported by KIRO, which helped prompt an investigation by the state Attorney General's office. That led to a complaint filed Tuesday that the Bellevue-based dating service had been overpromising its goods with high-pressure sales pitches. The local affiliate of Great Expectations – a company called DMZ Group, also signed a settlement in which it agreed to restrict its marketing practices and give partial refunds to unsatisfied customers. What Love Means To 4-8 Year Olds

Posted on June 20, 2010

Whatislove OPW – June 20 – Money is nice. But the
thing that helps keep a lot of matchmakers and internet dating workers
motivated is helping people find love. What is love anyway? The question
'What does love mean?' was put to a group of 4 to 8
year-olds. Their answers were broader and deeper than you'd think:

'Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne
and they
go out and smell each other.' Karl – age 5

'Love is what's in the room
with you at Christmas if you stop opening
presents
and listen.' Bobby – age 7 (Wow!)

'Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it
everyday.' Noelle – age 7

'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her
toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even
when his
hands got arthritis too. That's love.'  Rebecca – age 8

'Love is when you go out
to eat and give somebody most of your French
fries
without making them give you any of theirs.' Chrissy – age 6

'When
someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just
know that your name is safe in their mouth.' Billy – age 4

'Love is what makes you smile when you're tired.' Terri – age 4

'Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip
before
giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.' Danny – age 7

'If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who
you
hate,' Nikka – age 6 (we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)

'Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone
all
day.' Mary Ann – age 4

'When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars
come
out of you.' (what an image) Karen – age 7

A four year old child whose next door neighbor was an
elderly
gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's
yard,
climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy
said, 'Nothing, I just helped him cry.'

Did I make your cry? You soppy thing. You're definitely in the right profession.  😉

iDate Coverage – Final Panel Debate

Posted on June 18, 2010

IDATE OPW – Jun 18 – The final panel debate is the culmination of the Internet Dating Conference. Panel participants include Frederick Vallaeys from Google AdWords, Mark Brooks from Online Personals Watch, Tai Lopez from Niche Enterprises, Violet Lim from Lunch Actually, Karinna Kittles-Karsten from Sacred Love, Julie Spira, and Victor Daniel from Elitemate.

The first discussion topic was the growing mobile market and its affects on online dating. The mobile platform is a powerful tool, but screen size limitations and platform limitations will affect site design and revenue models. Mobile sites and applications must be streamlined and intuitive to work well and be adopted by consumers. Advances in mobile technology, in particular smartphone platforms, are helping to increase the end user experience and development capabilities. Multitasking capability is one important advancement which will improve the user experience. Push technology also keeps the information flowing and drives user engagement on mobile devices.

Users tend to download mobile dating applications and use them for a short time, normally a week, then go inactive. The key to breaking through this problem is continuing user engagement to keep them active on your application. Mobile applications and sites have the potential to open up additional revenue streams for online dating companies through proper monetization and billing solutions. Mobile is gaining ground, but as with all new technologies, it will take time to ramp up and gain strong traction in the industry.

The second topic for discussion was social dating. What is fueling the growth of these sites and how well do they retain users over the long term? One aspect of social dating is the safety of meeting people within a group of people known by your friends. Another aspect is the ease of adoption and signup for the sites. The true test of the success of social dating sites is how effective they are at connecting people and creating relationships.

Discussions continued on to the importance of partnering with academia to further develop the dating experience. The science and psychology behind human interactions and relationships need to be implemented into the online dating experience to create successful and lasting matches. Site operators should put efforts into educating members in the skills needed to be successful in dating and relationships.

Finally, all of the panel participants believe that the online dating market will go up over the six months.
