Dating En Masse With Grouper

Posted on June 26, 2012

Grouper logoSFBG – June 26 – Grouper is a mixture of online matchmaking, blind dating, and networking. It pairs up two friend groups based on their Facebook profiles, as well as their answers to a short n survey focused on details like height and religion. After all three friends pay a $20 per-person registry fee online, and respond to any necessary Grouper emails, the encounter takes place entirely in the flesh. Users gather at the assigned date, time, and bar for complimentary drinks. Venues that partner with Grouper provide a round of free drinks in exchange for new customers Grouper brings through the door. Grouper is currently available in San Francisco and New York.

Matchmaking Service An Alternative To Web Dating

Posted on June 25, 2012

Elove logo new May 12TELEGRAM.COM – June 24 – Even with the popularity of Internet dating sites, matchmakers has survived. They make up ~14% of the $2 billion dating industry. Through eLove Matchmaking, Ms. McGraw, of Lexington, met seven men before she was introduced to the Littleton man who became her boyfriend. They’ve been together for a year. eLove consultants ask a lot of questions before they match a potential couple. Computers help them search the client database to find matches faster, but otherwise, technology hasn’t changed the business, said Paul Falzone, the company’s CEO and co-owner. It’s still about getting to know people. eLove, which is based in Norwell, has ~40 offices in the US and recently opened three in Canada. The company is expected to earn $18M in revenue this year, up from $15M in 2011.

FindYourFaceMate Uses Face.com To Make Matches

Posted on June 24, 2012

Findyourfacemate logo newUSA TODAY – June 21 – A new dating website that uses facial recognition to suggest pairings based on shared facial characteristics is launching. “In the beginning, it’s the face,” says Christina Bloom, founder of FindYourFaceMate, whose official launch is July 10. Making the site’s pairings possible is Face.com, an Israeli company, which has been acquired by Facebook. Face.com’s software scans photos to examine facial features and compare them with other faces to try to make a positive identification. Facebook uses the software to identify specific people in photos, while the dating site uses the software to find people with similar features as potential dates.

Skout App May Shut Teen Forum Permanently

Posted on June 22, 2012

Skout logoLA TIMES – June 21 – Skout shut down its forum for 13- to-17-year-olds last week and assigned a team of security specialists to determine whether it can make the app safe for teens. If not, the company plans to close that forum for good. The alleged assaults on two girls, ages 12 and 15, and on a 13-year-old boy underscore how tough it can be to keep kids safe on a new generation of mobile apps. Skout was originally created as a flirting app for adults, and users had to be 18 or older to sign up. It morphed into more of a social networking app that finds people nearby with whom a user can swap messages, photos and virtual gifts and make plans to meet up. But so many of the app’s users were kids (~15%) that last year Skout opened a separate forum for teens.

Double Happiness For China’s Matchmaking Firms

Posted on June 21, 2012

5qchina.comREUTERS – June 21 – The one-child policy in modern China piles on even more pressure on children to get on with the business of producing offspring. Matchmaking events are increasingly common. TV dating shows such as "If You Are the One," in which men have 20 minutes to sell themselves to 24 female guests, have become wildly popular. People have become more aware about matchmaking," said Sunny Ouyang, the founder and CEO of Shanghai-based matchmaking company 5QChina.com. Most of her members are white-collar workers in their late 20s or early 30s.
