Privacy On OkCupid

Posted on June 14, 2012

Okcupid logo aktualniBOSTINNO – June 13 – OkCupid is famous for making the most of its users’ data, whether to analyze on its OkTrends blog or to make money. OkCupid used nine different tracking companies and ad networks to obtain information about its visitors. These trackers aren’t a part of OkCupid: they’re independent third parties mining user data like clicks, ad views, pages visited, and time spent viewing a particular profile. Even if you delete information from your profile or account, OkCupid states that “we may keep such information archived indefinitely.” After digging into OkCupid’s Privacy Policy, we learned that they say that “third parties” and “service providers” can access members’ personal information in order to “direct and display specific advertisements” to them. Match.com, IAC, and all of IAC’s properties may now access all of OkCupid’s user information.

Ad For Manhunt.net Escapes Ban In UK

Posted on June 14, 2012

Manhunt mobile logoCAMPAIGNLIVE – June 13 – An outdoor ad for manhunt.net that features two topless men about to kiss has escaped censure by the advertising watchdog, despite a flurry of complaints that it was overtly sexual. In its ruling, the ASA said it had noted that Online Buddies and Primesight had given the poster's location careful consideration, so as to avoid schools and businesses that provided children-based services. The ASA ruled the ad was "sexually suggestive", rather than overtly sexual, and concluded the ad was not socially irresponsible and the ad could continue to run.

Skout Suspends Service For Teens Amid Rape Allegations

Posted on June 13, 2012

Skout logoLA TIMES – June 12 – Skout has temporarily shut down its services for teens amid a series of rape allegations involving its underage users. "Until we can design better protections, we are temporarily shutting down the under-18 community," founder Christian Wiklund wrote. In the last couple of weeks, three men ranging in age from 21 to 37 have been accused of posing as teenagers on the app's teen forum and allegedly luring boys and girls ages 12 to 15 to sexually assault them, according to a New York Times report. The men, all currently facing criminal charges, allegedly used Skout to contact minors.

Online Personals Watch Is 8 Years Old

Posted on June 11, 2012

OPW logo z banneruOPW – June 11 – Eight years ago I started Online Personals Watch. We've now run 6,413 posts and have 7,661 comments on the site, and have spawned a few offshoot blogs (see right bar).

I was working at FriendFinder in 2003, and friends kept referring me GREAT articles covering the internet dating industry. But I wasn't making the time to read them. I looked around for a blog that was summarizing the idating industry news and couldn't find one. So I started OPW.

This is an illumination blog. We review and summarize the news daily and aim to condense three hours of reading to three minutes, for you. We interview the rock stars and innovators in the industry, and serve executives and marketeers with the top news bites and knowledge, so you can make better decisions, serve users better, and make more money.

OKCupid’s Founder Digs Into Data On Daters

Posted on June 11, 2012

Okcupid sam yaganINTERNET RETAILER – June 10 – Observers can tell a lot about a person from their online dating profile, Sam Yagan, co-founder and CEO of OKCupid told attendees this week at the Internet Retailer 2012 Conference and Exhibition. “Our brand was built on our data,” Yagan said. OKCupid has demographic, psychographic, lifestyle and consumption data. That’s why a large, unnamed retailer contacted OKCupid to try and learn more about its customers, Yagan said. Retailers can use OKCupid’s model to determine what a shopper wants, not, however, by what she says she wants, but by her actions. Older women, he said, are more positive and have more self-confidence. They also enjoy sex more and are interested in casual sex more than younger women. Women who like the taste of beer are more willing to have sex on the first date.
