At OkCupid, Being An Atheist Is A Date-maker

Posted on November 14, 2012

Okcupid logo aktualniWASHINGTON POST – Nov 14 – In some circles, being an atheist is a strike against you. But at OkCupid, including the word “atheist” in a first message to another user was more likely to garner a reply than any other religious descriptor except Christian. “Mentioning your religion helps you, but, paradoxically, it helps you most if you have no religion,” co-founder Christian Rudder wrote on the site’s blog. OkCupid was founded by Rudder, Sam Yagan, Chris Coyne and Max Krohn. In the 1990s, while still Harvard math majors, they created SparkNotes, a series of study guides that was sold to Barnes and Noble. The four launched OkCupid in 2003, and the site has since attracted ~10M users. Three of the founders describe themselves as nonbelievers in their onsite profiles.

True Love Former Directors Fined $1.5 Million By NSW Court

Posted on November 13, 2012

JusticehammerAAP – Nov 13 – Three "romance robbers" from True Love Corp must pay ~$1.5M for exploiting vulnerable clients and leaving them dateless and destitute. NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe says True Love's conduct was "despicable" and he hopes "other ruthless operators" in the dating game will take note of the landmark decision against them. Zivko Dimitrijevski, the former director and his wife Helen Dimitrijevski, a former manager of TLC, have been ordered to pay compensation of $1,123,095 and banned from working in the introduction industry. Hollie Veall, a former co-director, was ordered to pay $342,050. In most cases the clients were told to upgrade their memberships, at significant cost, to meet more people and have life coaching and grooming services but didn't get anything and it turned out the prospective partners on the databases were largely nonexistent.

Software Engineer Jason Barton developed Wikimatch.com to utilize socially collaborative matchmaking, in which people estimate the likelihood of a good match between singles. The Question Of Internet Dating Standards

Posted on November 12, 2012

LIST-OF-RULESOPW – Nov 12 – There's a general consensus that it would be a good idea for the Internet dating industry to assert a set of standards on itself, before governments around the world take more initiative and impose them.  Here's a few standards that are worthy of your attention.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Australia has this set of guidelines.

A group of leading German Internet dating services agreed on a set of best practices called the Spin Kodex to help consumers distinguish rogue from reputable services.  They use the Federal Association of the Digital Economy to handle complaints.

And more recently, Jackie Elton (Christian Connection) has led the charge in the UK to build a set of standards under the Association of British Introduction Agencies.  Its a work in progress and they're planning on launching it early next year.

What do you think. Your comments please?
