Hater Dating App Will Expand Beyond Dating

Posted on February 28, 2017

Hater welcome screenTECH CRUNCH – Feb 28 – Hater founder and CEO Brendan Alper says the idea for the app came up a year and a half ago, but he hadn't envisioned it as being a real product at the time. Instead, Alper, a former Goldman Sachs employee, had left the banking biz to pursue his passion in writing comedy. Hater was originally going to be a part of an online comedy sketch. But the more he talked about it, the more it seemed like the app might actually have real appeal. The app connects people based on their dislikes. Hater now has 310k users and 30k+ daily active users. Alper is planning the expansion to social, more Facebook ad tests and a partnership with Cosmo, which will publish stats pulled from the app. Brands are also talking to Hater about future integrations, which could see them being able to place their own items into the app's list, then analyze the results of who likes and hates those topics.

The Fears Involved In Launching An App

Posted on February 28, 2017

Dateplay logoHUFFINGTON POST – Feb 24 – Vana Koutsomitis released her dating app DatePlay on Valentine's Day in the App Store. "It was absolutely terrifying. There was still so much to fix", she says. The team sat down with one of their mentors and told him about all their issues. They were considering postponing the launch yet again. He said: "Just get on with it and release the app! It is never going to be perfect." One of the biggest issues that early stage startups phase is running out of cash before gaining traction. Each delay that you have is costly and the more time you spend working on the app, the more money you spend. Pull the trigger and launch your product! Even if it's not completely ready.

Japanese Women Fall In Love With Men Who Live In An App

Posted on February 27, 2017

IkemenSTAR2 – Feb 27 – Japanese book editor Miho Takeshita is a fan of romance simulation games, a booming market in Japan that is winning the hearts of women looking for some unconventional loving. "It's very addictive," Takeshita said. "Even though the game characters aren't real, you start to develop feelings towards them." That is the whole point, said Natsuko Asaki, a game producer at Cybird, which created the popular series Ikemen – a Japanese term for handsome guys. The Ikemen app has been downloaded ~15M times since its launch five years ago, and the firm has also released an English version. Some 80% of fans, including a growing number of married women, play just before bed, a Cybird survey found. The Ikemen app lets players escape into a world where they create their own love story with digital hunks.

Giving Credit For A Partner’s Housework Strengthens The Relationship

Posted on February 26, 2017

Man workingTHE CONVERSATION – Feb 13 – A recent Swedish study found heterosexual couples were more likely to divorce if men discounted women's housework contributions. A Day In The Life Of Grant Langston, CEO Of eHarmony

Posted on February 25, 2017

Eharmony grant langston 2017 cutTHE MEMO – Feb 23 – Grant Langston is a veteran eHarmony employee. He joined way back in 2000 as one of the first employees. He was promoted to CEO last year.

Q: What part of your morning routine sets you up for the day?
A: I'm up about 6am. I have two small children and I work hard to make the mornings about connecting with them and my wife.

Q: What apps do you use to be more productive?
A: WunderlistWunderlist: The best to-do list I've ever seen.
Evernote: I use this as a filing cabinet for personal items.
iXpenseIt: To track expenses.
IFTTT: Another little tool for shortcuts.
CloudBeats: I've put my large music collection in Dropbox and CloudBeats lets me play it.
SeatGuru: If you travel a lot, it's a great way to avoid ending up in the quirky seat that will hurt your back.

Q: How many people, outside of family, do you meet in a day?
A: This varies greatly. One of the things I like most about this role is the wide range of possibilities.

Q: What book have you read, either recently or in the past, that has inspired you?
A: The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz. This is the book for the wartime CEO.

Q: What advice would you give for people who are eager to get into your industry?
A: Find a place that's doing the work you want to do, preferably a company that's small and struggling, and reach out to them.

Q: Are you sending emails in the night? Or do you have a wind down routine?
A: I've learned to be sensitive to that.

Q: If you could ask your idol one question, who would it be, and what would you ask?
A: If I only had one question I would pick someone who went through the most dire circumstance, Abraham Lincoln. The question would be: "What's the best want to enjoy life and maintain perspective when the pressure is on and the chips are down?"

I see so many leaders consumed by their fight. They seem to be hating every minute of their work life. There's a real skill to having fun when times are hard.
