The Failed-marriage Market In China

Posted on January 11, 2018

Marriage counselingGLOBAL TIMES – Jan 10 – An increasing number of companies devoted to romance counseling are springing up in recent years in China, rapidly growing into its own strong market force. Shu Xin is the founder of Weiqing, a marriage counseling agency with 17 years of history. Weiqing attempted an IPO in 2016, but had to retreat due to its failure to disclose its confidential client list. The company generated ~20M yuan ($3M) in revenue in 2016 with 100% annual growth rate for three consecutive years. Its biggest anonymous client, a woman, spent 1.4M yuan that year to get rid of a woman that almost ripped apart her family. Shu dismissed widespread rumors about how his business "threatens" mistresses to leave disloyal husbands. "The first step is to befriend the mistress", he says. "After we gain her trust, we will encourage her to think in the shoes of the poor wife and guide her to imagine the pain of betrayal herself." 90% of extramarital affairs his company has dealt with are caused by an unsatisfying sex life between husband and wife. Chris Wu is the founder of Xiaolu, an online marriage counseling platform. The company generated ~ 200M yuan in revenue in 2017 alone. Wu believes his company is only seeing a small chunk of China's 2B yuan "love counseling market," which he expects will grow to 10B yuan within the next five years.

Online Dating Can Make Society Less Segregated

Posted on January 11, 2018

Online dating 22THE CONVERSATION – Jan 10 – The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) recently banned an ad from eHarmony which said the site has a "scientifically proven" matching system. According to the ASA, eHarmony failed to demonstrate that its matching system was scientifically proven to give users a better chance of finding a partner. But oline dating has changed who we end up marrying. Before online dating, people tended to marry people who were already in their social circle. After 1995, with the rise of online dating, people were increasingly more able to date anyone, and had a higher chance of matching with someone from another race or ethnicity. There is new evidence that internet diffusion has contributed to increasing marriage rates among 21 to 30-year-old people in the US. Also, relationships that start online transition to marriage more quickly than those between couples who met offline.

OkCupid Billboards Were Rejected In Portland For Being Too Phallic

Posted on January 10, 2018

Okcupid billboardWILLAMETTE WEEK – Jan 10 – The billboard ads, which were designed by Portland's Wieden+Kennedy, are a play on the acronym DTF (Down To Fuck, of course). DTFootball vs. Futbol, the ad reads—beside a couple soccer balls and a football arranged in a phallic fashion. With the ad, OkCupid's goal is to get people to redefine the "F" in DTF. The vendors selling the space for the billboards rejected the ads for fear of bad press for using a phallic image. Portlanders can expect to see the not-at-all-sexual ads up around Portland soon.
