Chief Scientist At eHarmony Cavorts With The… Facebook

Posted on January 5, 2018

OPW – Jan 5 – Steve Carter is one of two super long-termer executives remaining at eHarmony. (Grant Langston, the CEO, is the other one). Dr Carter is the man (leading the team) behind the algorithm, and has worked at eHarmony since 1999, before it was launched. Starting out as a research analyst he's risen through the ranks to become VP of Matching in 2012 and the Chief Scientist in 2016, and now…he's also working as Data Science Manager at Facebook "Helping Facebook get even better at making meaningful and beneficial connections between people."

Screen Shot 2018-01-03 at 8.34.27 PMIn the past, Facebook has declared themselves not a dating site, and even gone to the extent of shunning and banning the dating industry from advertising for a while, perhaps to help clarify it's distinction from dating. So what's going on underneath the hood. What could Steve be working on. Cause for concern, or celebration? Your comments please.

Gay Dating App Chappy Is Fighting Racist Body-Shamers

Posted on January 5, 2018

Chappy logoADVOCATE – Jan 4 – Ollie Locke and Jack Rogers, the cofounders of Chappy, saw a disturbing trend in hookup and dating apps. Things like "no fats, no fems, and no Asians" were visible on dating profiles. "Our incredibly progressive community is pulled backwards in time by anonymous platforms that provide spaces for actions and language that would never be deemed acceptable in real life", said Ollie Locke. Chappy created "The Pledge", a declaration that every user must accept before creating their profile. They promise that they will be courteous about others' feelings and refrain from bias and isolating behavior.

Posted on January 5, 2018

Rightly iconSF WEEKLY – Jan 3 – "While the LGBT community often faces social stigmas in real life, there are more and more dating apps aimed specifically to cater to them," said Arianna, a PR representative from Rightly. "Straight people have been ignored and most of them do not want to meet LGBT people in a general dating app."

PR Web Bans Dating Apps, But Is OK With Guns

Posted on January 3, 2018

Prweb logoOPW – Jan 3 – We just got a note back from PR Web that dating is no longer acceptable for their premium (i.e. worthwhile) releases.

"Due to recent requirements from outlets in our distribution network, PRWeb is no longer able to distribute press releases regarding dating sites/apps/services via our Advanced or Premium distribution options."

But guns are ok?

Can someone please tell me why this American media network is offended by dating, but ok with violence?

Watchdog Bans Advert’s Claim eHarmony Is ‘Scientifically Proven’

Posted on January 3, 2018

Eharmony bannerTHE GUARDIAN – Jan 4 – UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) says eHarmony's billboard ad is misleading because the dating site cannot prove it provides a greater chance of finding lasting love. The offending advertisement said: "Step aside, fate. It’s time science had a go at love." It went on: "eHarmony's scientifically proven matching system decodes the mystery of compatibility and chemistry so you don't have to." "Phrases like 'scientifically proven' should be confined to claims that are just that, not used in crude puffery designed to lure in those longing for love," said Lord Lipsey, a former lay member of the ASA's council. eHarmony submitted copies of two published studies that reported higher levels of marital satisfaction for couples who met through eHarmony than any other offline or online methods. But the ASA found that the results of the studies did not justify using the words that were the subject of the complaint.
