Posted on January 29, 2019

Coffeemeetsbagel dawoon kang reddit amaCMB BLOG – Jan 29 – Coffee Meets Bagel's Co-Founder and CEO Dawoon Kang braved Reddit's AMA (Ask Me Anything) on January 22 to answer the questions on everyone's mind: from tips for online dating, to where the name "Coffee Meets Bagel" came from.

Q: How can I increase my match rates on CMB?
A: Have an effective profile (longer profiles are better than short ones) and respond to chat requests when you receive them.

Q: Is Dating Sunday really the busiest day for online dating?
A: It was actually the biggest chat day in CMB history! The next most-popular day was the following Sunday (Jan 13)

Q: What are some of the best online dating icebreakers?
A: Jokes are great. Secondarily, commenting on someone’s profile is also a great way to hit it off.

Q: What's your online dating philosophy?
A: Quality over quantity.

Q: How does 'Discover' work?
A: The idea of Discover is to open up the pool of matches to people you might not consider otherwise.

Q: What are you doing about online dating bots?
A: This is a real problem on our app. This quarter, our goal is to get ourselves set up to use a third party safety specialists.

Q: What does the name 'Coffee Meets Bagel' mean?
A: We choose bagel as an homage to New York (where CMB started), and coffee just goes well with bagels.

Tinder’s CEO Swipes Right on These Advisers

Posted on January 29, 2019

Tinder elie seidman 2019 wsjWSJ – Jan 25 – Tinder CEO, Elie Seidman, says he invites criticism but doesn't act on every piece of advice he receives. He prefers feedback from people with whom he's worked closely so he knows how to interpret their suggestions. Here are his trusted advisers:

Allen Kay, Retired partner at Korey Kay & Partners
Mr. Seidman first sought out Mr. Kay in 2009 while looking for an advertising firm to represent his first startup – hotel review site Oyster.com. In the years since, Mr. Seidman regularly calls on Mr. Kay for branding advice.

Nick Hammerschlag, President of Entangled Group
Although Mr. Hammerschlag is 12 years his junior, Mr. Seidman considers his former colleague at General Atlantic Partners a vital mentor. Mr Seidman calls on Mr. Hammerschlag, now leading an education strategy consultancy, for a "perspective that is generationally relevant" given that Tinder's audience is skewed toward users in their 20s.

Jocelyn Goldfein, Managing director at Zetta Venture Partners
"She's one of my thinkers for management, engineering and product," says Mr. Seidman.

James Bennett, Chairman and CEO of Midcon Midstream LP
Mr. Seidman says he takes insights from Mr. Bennett's fresh approach to managing a workforce with diverse educational backgrounds.

Indian Women Are Breaking the Divorce Stigma

Posted on January 29, 2019

Divorce picECONOMIC TIMES – Jan 27 – India still remains at the top of the list of countries with the lowest divorce rates. Divorces are riddled with stigma in India. But women are challenging that perception now and pushing for a change. ~110K Facebook users from India openly state their relationship status as "divorced". Though women comprise only a fifth of this figure, they surpass men by expressing interest in the concept of a "divorce party" or liking pages around the "happily divorced" theme. Dating app Truly Madly has seen a 200% increase in the number of profiles stating their divorced, widowed, or single-parent status upfront. In 2016, 3% of Truly Madly's user base would have such statuses.

Millennials in India Are Turning to Algorithms to Find Their Match

Posted on January 25, 2019

Betterhalfai teamBLOOMBERG – Jan 24 – Pawan Gupta wasn't having any luck finding a match so he teamed up with engineer Rahul Namdev to start an AI-powered matchmaking app, called Betterhalf.AI. The dating app, funded by 15 angel investors including half a dozen MIT alumni, puts users through several levels of verification comprising social networks, phone number, personal and work e-mail, and government ID. New users answer a breadth of questions on moral values, emotions and personality. That information is then melded with data from married individuals, open-source data and compatibility research. Betterhalf is targeted solely at people looking for a serious relationship. The start-up has 15 employees. There's plenty of competition in the new AI space including Truematch. Matrimony.com, which has 3.7M active users, is developing an AI-powered chatbot that it plans to deploy later this year.
