What Role Should Dating Apps Play in Preventing Cyberstalking?

Posted on January 22, 2019

CyberstalkingCNET – Jan 21 – "The overwhelming majority of our domestic violence cases involve some type of technological abuse," said Sadie Diaz, a senior staff attorney for the Courtroom Advocates Project. Stalking victims say that dating apps and services have done little to prevent this abuse. The FBI encourages people to report cybercrimes to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, but it doesn't have a category for cyberstalking. The closest is "Harassment/Threats of Violence." While the FBI received 16,974 complaints in 2018, the Justice Department prosecuted 16 cyberstalking cases that year. Matthew Herrick, of New York, wasn't aware there were multiple fake profiles of him on Grindr. Then one day, someone showed up at his apartment expecting sex. It was the first of many. His ex-boyfriend had created the profiles after the two broke up, and was courting strangers to come harass him in real life. Herrick asked ~50 times for Grindr to delete fake profiles. Section 230 of the Federal Communications Decency Act, a law from 1996, provides immunity to tech platforms from actions of its users. When Herrick sued Grindr for failing to delete the fake accounts, a New York judge dismissed the case on Jan. 25, 2018. Nearly a year later, at an appeals hearing on Jan. 7, Grindr's lawyers echoed the same argument. While Grindr ignored Herrick's pleas for help, Scruff was more responsive. Fake profiles were removed within two days. Eric Silverberg, Scruff's CEO and co-founder, said the company has a focus on moderators and detecting fraud. Facebook, for example, continues to expand its protection against revenge porn, even if Section 230 would protect them.

How Shaadi.com Uses Technology to Find the Perfect Match

Posted on January 22, 2019

Shaadi ajay poddarETCIO.COM – Jan 21 – Ajay Poddar, VP-Engineering, Shaadi.com shares how the online matchmaking company uses technology to bring people together. When it comes to the matchmaking, first impressions matter. The company maintains a team that reviews photos to ensure they are appropriate. Using Amazon Rekognition, Shaadi has reduced the photo screening time by 95%. The profile-matching process is computationally intensive and algorithm-based. They decided to migrate to AWS in order to improve agility and reduce infrastructure management complexity. Today, ~60% of Shaadi's cost on the web servers got saved by moving to Amazon EC2 Spot. With AWS they have doubled the number of matchmaking algorithms that could be tested simultaneously. "Prior to using AWS we could run less than 2 AB test at any given time, however now we run 6-8, and that can even go up to 10-12 as AWS allows us to scale", Mr Poddar said.

Lumen Is Launching in Wales, And Celebrates the Romanticism of the Welsh Language

Posted on January 22, 2019

Lumen iconNORTH WALES LIVE – Jan 21 – Lumen, a new dating app for the over 50s is launching in Wales, and the people behind it claim to have created a new Welsh phrase. They've come up with word slogan credwchmewncariadarôlpumdegoherwyddeifodmorllawennawrfelybuerioed to mark the launch. The slogan is set to appear on billboards up and down the country. Crafted by Sarah Russell, a writer from Monmouthshire, she says that loosely translated it means "believe in love after 50 because it's as joyful now as it ever was." She was initially inspired by the longest place name in Wales – which is Llanfairpwll (in its short form) on Anglesey. The village's full name is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

The Biggest Pitfalls of Online Dating in India

Posted on January 22, 2019

Indian dating statsTIMES OF INDIA – Jan 18 – When it comes to marriage, Indian families have traditionally relied on the referrals route. The online matchmaking industry in India is now almost two decades old, and one big benefit it has brought is exponentially increasing the choices available to those seeking partners. According to a Ken Research Report of 2016, India's online matchmaking industry revenues are set to touch $318M by 2020. The biggest pitfalls of online dating are security and safety. Not surprisingly, the gender ratio is highly skewed in favour of males. A survey by dating app Woo puts the ratio of male: female at 74:26. Woo says it keeps users' personal details confidential, analyses users' digital footprint to verify relationship status and professional information, and enables women to call matched profiles without revealing their own phone numbers. TrulyMadly, another player in the space uses a trust score for authenticity and gets the user Facebook-verified. However, possibly the safest method of matchmaking or dating still remains the referrals route. Dating app Ponder uses referrals from family members and close friends to help its users find the special one.

Match.com Pays Off for Rare Frog

Posted on January 22, 2019

Romeo the frogNEWSER – Jan 18 – For the last decade, Romeo had been the last known frog of his kind, but that has since changed thanks to an online dating stunt. Researchers put up a profile for Romeo on Match, and the resulting attention raised $25K, enough to fund a search expedition in Bolivia. Researchers found three more males and two females, including an adult who has been named Juliet. Once the frogs are out of quarantine, Juliet will be matched with Romeo in the hope that offspring will result.
