Dating App JigTalk Raises $1M

Posted on January 14, 2019

Jigtalk icon 2019BQ – Jan 14 – JigTalk, the dating app that encourages online daters to talk more, has officially closed its seed round of $1M. The round was led by Apadmi Ventures and includes significant backing from high profile London, New York and Manchester-based angel investors. In addition to growing its team to 10 full-time staff, the company has also welcomed a new Chairman, Christopher Edmonds. Edmonds is the ex-global MD of technology for JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley. Over the course of the last 2 years, JigTalk has beta tested the app in the north of England and built a team ready to launch its app UK-wide, starting in London in Jan 2019.

Muzmatch Is for People Looking for Marriage

Posted on January 14, 2019

Muzmatch logoBUSINESS INSIDER – Jan 14 – Dating app Muzmatch claims ~1M users. Founded by an ex-Morgan Stanley banker, the app caters to Muslims who are looking to find a partner to marry. Muzmatch is mostly popular in Britain, the US and Canada. Shahzad Younas left his job as banker in June 2014 to learn how to build apps after he had the idea for the company. In April 2015, initially using almost $200K of his own savings, he launched the first version of the app from home, and grew it to 50K users around the world in less than a year. He met iOS engineer Ryan Brodie in April 2016. The pair revamped and relaunched the company in August 2016. In summer 2017, the duo raised ~$2M in seed investment. By halfway through 2018, they had 500K registered users. Muzmatch claims to be the only one in the world with a chaperon feature, which allows a friend or relative to be present in a chat. "There's an Islamic principle where when a guy and a girl are getting to know each other there should be a third party present," Younas says. "For some users it's important – if it didn't have that feature, they wouldn't use it." In October 2018, it launched ads on the London Underground with catchy phrases such as "Halal, is it me you're looking for?" It launched a second campaign in January with similarly tongue-in-cheek taglines.

The Big Hangup: Why the Future Is Not Just Your Phone

Posted on January 14, 2019

Cell phonesWALL STREET JOURNAL – Jan 13 – Steve Jobs took to a stage a dozen years ago this week to introduce the first Apple iPhone. It changed the way people communicated, the technology world reoriented around the smartphone, supplanting the personal computer, MP3 players, the digital camera and maps. And the mobile economy was born. Today, it looks like the era of smartphone supremacy is starting to wane. The devices aren't going away any time soon, but the global sales slump. Apple and Samsung risk seeing their high-end phones become commoditized, as Chinese rivals Huawei and Xiaomi prove capable of making similar devices at lower prices. In 2015, annual smartphone shipments grew at a double-digit clip. Those days are over: The industry saw its first declines at the end of 2017 and remained negative all last year. The challenge tech companies, wireless carriers and device makers now face is birthing the next society-shifting technology.

Korean Dating App Amanda Claims 5M Users

Posted on January 12, 2019

Amanda iconTHE INVESTOR – Jan 10 – Amanda is a dating app that has shot to the top of the industry charts over the past few years. In the Q2 of 2018, Amanda ranked first in terms of sales in the local dating app market, with ~5M users. This year, the industry is expected to hit 500B won ($446M) in South Korea. One way of quality control at Amanda is through the so-called "member-screening system." People who want to join must be judged by existing members and obtain a score of 3.0 or higher. "Koreans don't like meeting strangers online, especially women, who like to meet people who've already been approved by their friends or peers," explained Shin Sang-hoon, co-founder and CEO of NextMatch, the operator of Amanda.

Q&A With League’s Founder Amanda Bradford

Posted on January 10, 2019

Theleague amanda bradford linkedinTHE VERGE – Jan 10 –

Q: What is The League?
A: The whole mission of The League was to create power couples. Sometimes I joke and say it's an app for workaholics, but at the end of the day, it’s people that are really serious about their career and really want to make some kind of impact on the world.

Q: So for you, is the career the most important characteristic when looking for a potential partner?
A: I don't want to say it's most important, but I wanted to play more than just hot or not. You can see a little more about the person and what career that they decided to dedicate their livelihood, too.

Q: How are you determining who gets to be let into the app?
A: We use both Facebook and LinkedIn. Then we put everyone into a waiting list. It's similar to a college admissions pool. Job and education is a very big factor in the application. We can see who's checking back in, who's referring friends, and figuring out how it all works, and we use all of that information to predict who's going to be a good user in the system. We don't reject anyone. We just keep them on the waiting list. We try to encourage them to make some changes. There's also sort of like a demand score for everybody, and if you're in high demand, you might get in faster than if you're in lower demand.

Q: Do you have an estimate of what percentage of people get waitlisted, and then make changes, and then later get in?
A: Our acceptance rate in general hovers around 20 to 30%. And then a lot of people don't come back and make changes. A lot of the people that we don’t accept were probably not the right fit anyway.
