Has Facebook Been Good for the World?

Posted on February 7, 2019

Facebook icon useVOX – Feb 4 -15 influencers weigh-in on Facebook. Here's some key quotes relevant to us. – Mark Brooks

Sherry Turkle, author of Life on the Screen and clinical psychologist at MIT
Facebook friendships offered the feeling of connection without the demands of intimacy… At the Facebook launch, I expressed my disbelief that we could have intimacy without privacy and democracy without privacy. …Facebook taught us that we can only consider them together. The social media business model sold our privacy in ways that fractured democracy.

Ro Khanna, US Congress member representing Silicon Valley
Facebook has been a net good for humanity by democratizing communication and mobilization… It has allowed members of a diaspora to stay connected to their relatives. It has helped provide a sense of community in an age when families have been split.

Steven Pinker, author of Enlightenment Now and professor of psychology at Harvard University
People can make choices that are bad for them, like addictive drugs, and they can make choices that are good for them individually but bad for the world, like carbon emissions.

Many of the rumors about the social, psychological, and political pathologies loosed by social media do not survive fact-checking. Careful studies have shown that social media has not led to epidemics of loneliness, depression, and suicide (see the references in the "Happiness" chapter of Enlightenment Now and in my follow-up essay).

Jonathan Haidt, author of The Coddling of the American Mind and professor at NYU
There's an old joke about an optimist who fell off of the observation deck of the Empire State Building. As he was passing the 30th floor someone called out to him: "How's it going?" He replied: "So far, so good!" I think that joke has some relevance for humanity in the Facebook era.

Peter W. Singer, author of Like War: The Weaponization of Social Media and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution
Mark Zuckerberg, [is] not just a billionaire, but the ruler of a digital kingdom that has more members than any single nation in the world.

Looking for LOVe? Spark Networks Offers Serious Upside

Posted on February 7, 2019

Sparknetworks logo 2018SEEKING ALPHA – Feb 6 – Spark Networks SE was formed in 2017 through a 75:25 merger between Affinitas GmbH and Spark Networks, Inc. Its shares are severely mispriced because investors remain scarred by Old Spark's dismal performance. Old Spark struggled for years with falling subscribers and revenues and was heavily loss-making. YOY its revenues fell 22% in 2015 and 27% in 2016. Unlike Old Spark, Affinitas has a long history of organic and acquisitive growth. Spark Networks SE is forecast to achieve 2018E revenue of EUR108M and adjusted EBITDA of EUR10.4M. Base case valuation indicates over 100% upside vs. 30% downside presenting a compelling asymmetric investment opportunity. A bull case would offer large profit potential.

Posted on February 7, 2019

Match group brands selected 2018MARKETWATCH – Feb 6 – Shares of Match Group are down 4% after Deutsche Bank analyst Kunal Madhukar downgraded the stock to hold from buy, writing that the company's "gold rush is over." That's a reference to Tinder Gold feature, which has helped drive strong paid member growth in recent quarters. Madhukar said that future growth for Tinder is likely to come from international sources, and the company may generate lower revenue per user overseas. Match Group reports earnings this afternoon.

How Tinder Creates Better Matches Through AWS

Posted on February 7, 2019

Tinder icon on mobileARN – Feb 6 – Tinder is using image recognition technology from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to power its matching algorithm. Speaking during AWS re:Invent in December, Tom Jacques, VP of engineering at Tinder explained how it is using the AWS Rekognition service to identify user's key traits by mining the 10B photos they upload daily. "The challenges we face are in understanding who members want to see, who they match with, who will chat, what content can we show you and how do we best present it to you," Jacques outlined. Tinder ingests 40TBs of data a day into its analytics and ML systems to power matches, which are underpinned by AWS cloud services. "The more pictures you have, the higher likelihood of success to match," says Jacques. An increasing number of users are foregoing the bio altogether, meaning Tinder needed to find a way to mine those images for data that could power its recommendations. Rekognition allows Tinder to automatically tag these billions of photos with personality markers, like a person with a guitar as a musician or 'creative', or someone in climbing gear as 'adventurous' or 'outdoorsy'. Rekognition is available off the shelf and is charged at $1 for the first 1M images processed per month, $0.80 for the next 9M, $0.60 for the next 90M and $0.40 for over 100M.

Vimeo and Match Facing BT Patent Infringement Claims

Posted on February 7, 2019

Patent lawWIPR – Feb 6 – Video streaming website Vimeo and Match Group will face a patent infringement suit after a US district court partially rejected claims brought by British Telecommunications (BT). The US District Court for the District of Delaware ruled on Monday, Feb 4, that two of BT's infringement claims would proceed to trial. The British telecoms company accused Vimeo and Match Group, both subsidiaries of IAC, of infringing six of its patents. The IAC subsidiaries filed separate motions to dismiss BT's claims, citing insufficient evidence of infringement. The district court found that BT had made "plausible" arguments for infringement of the '105 and '200 patents.

Dating Apps & Data Security

Posted on February 7, 2019

Data securitySMART COMPANY – Feb 6 – In recent times, the topic of data privacy has been thrust aggressively into public awareness. Facebook experienced its largest security breach ever when an unknown hacker exploited a bug in the 'View As' feature to take control of 50M user accounts. Add to this the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where Facebook achieved global infamy for its role in influencing the 2016 US presidential election via the improper use of Facebook's API. But despite increased questioning about security and ethics, a mass exodus of users hasn't occurred. Facebook is still used widely by singles to verify their matches before going on a date. But scammers simply backup their fake dating profiles with fake Facebook profiles. Casual hook-up platform Adult FriendFinder combs through every single profile created on their platform – checking usernames, IP and photos – to manually confirm that they are real. They also encourage users to verify their profile by sharing a copy of their driver's licence and deploy AI technologies to scan private messages for red-flags such as users under 18, threats of personal harm or fraud. But not all dating services take this strict approach and it's true that platforms worldwide are overrun with bot-generated profiles.

Samsung Is Trying to Turn Refrigerators Into Tinder

Posted on February 6, 2019

RefridgerdatingCNET – Feb 5 – Samsung is launching a dating app called Refrigerdating. The free app works with the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, a $4K appliance with a touchscreen on the door and an ingredient-tracking camera that can take photos of the inside of the fridge. "We hope people can meet with the help of the contents of the fridge, because that can tell you a lot about the personality," said Elin Axelsson, PR manager at Samsung Electronics Nordic based in Sweden. Refrigerdating is available through a browser, so it will work on every phone. Developer Peter Simonsson said the team opted for swiping since it's a common format for dating apps like Tinder and Bumble. Samsung even worked with a relationship expert when creating the app. Samsung recommends users don't stage the fridge to try to attract dates.
