Momo Stock Gained 28% in January

Posted on February 12, 2019

Momo app logoTHE MOTLEY FOOL – Feb 11 – Momo stock lost ~46% of its value from October through December, and the stock posted big gains in January (up 28%) as the market regained some ground. There doesn't appear to have been any company-specific news behind the company's stock gains last month, but Momo trades at low multiples compared to its earnings trajectory, and investors piled back into the stock as skittishness in the broader market abated. Momo is a stock that could see more big gains if the country's tech sector continues to recover. The company's monthly active user base continues to climb (up 17% YOY last quarter).

Users Complain of Account Hacks, but OkCupid Denies a Data Breach

Posted on February 11, 2019

OkCupid denies a data breachTECH CRUNCH – Feb 11 – A reader contacted TechCrunch after his account was hacked. He said the hacker broke in and changed his password, locking him out of his account. They changed his email address on file, preventing him from resetting his password. There were several cases of people saying their OkCupid account had been hacked. "There has been no security breach at OkCupid," said Natalie Sawyer, a spokesperson for OkCupid. "All websites constantly experience account takeover attempts. There has been no increase in account takeovers on OkCupid." "If you use the same password on several different sites or services, then your accounts on all of them have the potential to be taken over if one site has a security breach," says OKCupid support page. That's called credential stuffing, a technique of running a vast lists of usernames and passwords against a website to see if a combination lets the hacker in. The easiest, most effective way against credential stuffing is for the user to use a unique password on each site. For companies like OkCupid, the other effective blocker is by allowing users to switch on two-factor authentication. OkCupid is just one of many major dating sites that doesn't use two-factor authentication at all.

Tinder and Grindr Failing to Enforce Age Restrictions

Posted on February 11, 2019

Children on dating sitesDAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Feb 11 - Dozens of children as young as eight have been sexually abused by paedophiles on apps like Tinder and Grindr because they are failing to enforce age restrictions. The figures were revealed by 10 of 46 British police forces. Jeremy Wright, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, described the findings as 'truly shocking'. He added: "I will be writing to these companies asking what measures they have in place to keep children safe from harm, including verifying their age. If I'm not satisfied with their response, I reserve the right to take further action." Tinder said it uses both automated and manual tools to moderate users, including scanning profiles for 'red flag' images, and said it also depends on users to report profiles that may belong to a minor.

Local Indian Dating Sites Focus on Serious Relationships to Take on Tinder

Posted on February 11, 2019

Indian dating appsTIMES OF INDIA – TrulyMadly is one of the bigger and older local ventures in India. Co-founder & COO Snehil Khanor says the company caters to both casual and serious users, "but there's definitely more money in older cohorts." He says 80% of its paying users mention on their profile that they are looking for something serious. 50% of TrulyMadly users are 28+ years old, and 70% 26+. Sumesh Menon, co-founder and CEO of matchmaking app Woo, also says money flows in only from older users, who are both socially and financially dependent. BetterHalf.AI too pitches itself as a "serious matchmaking product for working professionals looking to get married in the next 1-2 years." Co-founder and CEO Pawan Gupta says matrimony sites are too overwhelming for today's generation. Matrimony, Shaadi and others that traditionally relied on revenue from parents, are transforming to attract singles while keeping parents still involved in the process. Murugavel Janakiraman, founder and CEO of Matrimony.com, says till the mid-2000s, parents registered on behalf of their daughters and sons. Not any more. "Today, ~60% of our 3.7M active members are individuals who register on their own." Investments in the segment have been small, and was at its peak in 2015 at $6.3M. That was the year when TrulyMadly raised $5.3M and iCrushiFlush raised $0.5M. Last year there was just one funding deal. According to comScore data, the number of unique visitors to Tinder in India had risen to as high as that of Shaadi in late 2017, and had continued to challenge the local players.

The Perfect Time to Buy Match Stock Is Long Gone

Posted on February 11, 2019

Stock1INVESTORPLACE – Feb 10 – The time to buy MTCH stock was down at $30 in late 2018; now, it's time to sell. Last week, shares of Match popped on an otherwise down day for markets after the Q4 numbers that impressed investors and included a healthy subscriber growth outlook. The stock rose 5% in response. But, the truth is that the time to buy MTCH stock was back in late 2018 when the market was freaking out about the potentially slowing growth at Tinder against the backdrop of a decelerating global economy. A lot has changed since then. For starter’s, MTCH stock has almost doubled. The Relative Strength Index on MTCH stock has jumped above 70, which is traditionally considered overbought territory. Historically speaking, whenever the RSI in MTCH stock has jumped to these levels, the stock proceeded to pullback over the subsequent several weeks.
