THE MEET GROUP – Jan 30 – Many well-respected tech companies came together to form a consortium called Project Artemis, a multi-year, multi-company effort for a multi-faceted text-based analysis system designed to detect child grooming. Teenagers sometimes masquerade as adults. Artemis is an A.I. system that relies on a database of common textual patterns derived from confirmed child predator conversations. The flexible design allows companies to incorporate their custom detection methods into it so multiple industries can use it. The database of common textual patterns employed by child predators was compiled using data from multiple companies and platforms. The modular architecture of Artemis permits adaptation and expansion based on the needs of different platforms, which allows platforms like The Meet Group to add features and functionality to it. The Meet Group added real-time processing functionality and support for profile metadata as well as two NLP algorithms. These additions improve Artemis for all companies who use it. The Meet Group believe Artemis is an essential component of any social-oriented company's predator detection toolkit and commend Microsoft on its openness in broadly sharing this capability across the industry to protect children everywhere.

ALLEYWATCH – Jan 27 – S'More dating app is trying to make online dating less superficial. The app is prioritizing conversation over appearances. The profile photos of two matched individuals are progressively unblurred based on the engagement in conversation.
Q: Tell us about what Something More offers.
A: S'More (a.k.a. Something More) provides daters with a totally interactive way of getting to learn more about a person before evaluating them on the basis of appearance. While most dating apps focus on an image first, S'More focuses on the whole person.
Q: What market does S'More target and how big is it?

Q: What are the milestones that you plan to achieve within six months?
A: We plan to launch out of beta by the end of the year. We will launch S'More by city starting in Boston and Washington DC.
Q: What is the one piece of startup advice that you never got?
A: No one ever told me just how important it is to step back from time to time to refocus on the "big picture." It's important to prioritize and invest your time where it will have the biggest impact.
Fraudsters Used Grindr to Spoof Ads on Roku Apps and Devices
BUZZFEEDNEWS – Jan 27 – In just the past three weeks, Grindr has been slammed by the Norwegian Consumer Council for exposing users' personal information, suspended from Twitter's ad network as a result of that investigation, and alleged to have been the way a Michigan hairstylist met the man who brutally murdered him. Adding to those concerns is new research showing that Grindr's Android app was exploited by ad fraudsters in a scheme that stole money from advertisers. Amin Bandeali, CTO of Pixalate, the Palo Alto ad fraud detection firm that identified the scam, said Grindr was likely targeted because of its large user base. Here's how the scam worked: A normal banner ad was bought on Grindr's Android app. The fraudsters then attached code that disguised the Grindr banner ad to look like a Roku video ad slot. This fake ad space was sold on programmatic advertising exchanges, the online marketplaces where digital ads are bought and sold. So cheap banner ads were used to resell more expensive video ads.
