Some Dating App’s Users Are Trying to Get People to Violate Social Distancing

Posted on May 11, 2020

Bi articleBUSINESS INSIDER – May 9 – Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge have reported increased use amid the coronavirus pandemic, while touting virtual dating alternatives for users instead of meeting up in person. Swaths of users are still encouraging matches to break quarantine to have sex and go on dates. Artist Samantha Rothenberg, who uses the handle @violetclair on Instagram, has been collecting these screenshots from followers, and said she's received close to a thousand of such stories. She has long collected screenshots of users' horror stories from dating app interactions, which she often will depict in illustrations she posts to her Instagram account. But now, nearly all of the screenshots she's received have had to do with coronavirus.

The Sudden Rise of Virtual, Video Based Dating

Posted on May 10, 2020

QUARTZ – May 10 – Covid-19 has forced a pivot to video for many online singles. A shift (towards video) within the (dating) industry has accelerated. Bumble launched in-app video chat in 2019 and said its use increased 56% worldwide over the last two weeks of March.

Online dating consultant Mark Brooks envisions a landslide industry shift to video, similar to Tinder's expansion to smartphones in 2013. His first client, Webdate, attempted this in 2005. The same year, what eventually became YouTube initially flailed as a video dating website. "It's been a long time coming, but I think in a couple of years it will be unusual not to be able to do a first date on a dating app," he said.

Virtual first dates address problems that plague online dating. According to Pew Research (2019) 45% of those polled (in US) said dating apps left them feeling frustrated, and ~50% consider the platforms to be unsafe. In that sense, virtual dates can serve as both a quick authentication and vibe check.

Mark Brooks: The video above is a 2 minute segment from a 7+minute news feature on dating. Through interviewing with Quartz I discovered the wonderful QZ.com news platform. Very impressed, and hooked. I recommend signing up so you can see this full video feature. I'm also subscribed to WSJ and The Economist, and find QZ to be a nice complement to these more formal and traditional news outlets.

Dating and Relationships in the Digital Age

Posted on May 10, 2020

Pewresearch logo 2020PEW RESEARCH – May 9 – A Pew Research Center survey conducted in October 2019 finds that many Americans encounter some tech-related struggles with their significant others. 51% say their partner is often distracted by their cellphone while they are trying to have a conversation with them. Seven-in-ten Americans say it is rarely or never acceptable for someone to look through their partner's cellphone without that person's knowledge. Still, 34% of partnered adults say they have looked through their partner's cellphone without that person's knowledge, with women being more likely than men to say they have done this (42% vs. 25%).

Filter Off, a New Dating app That Revolves Around Video Speed Dates

Posted on May 10, 2020

Filteroff logoMOBILE MARKETING MAGAZINE – May 8 – Filter Off's co-founder and CEO Zach Schleien discusses what the COVID-19 pandemic has done to the online dating scene, and why people are more inclined to use video dating. "I've used all the dating apps, and it's a very long process from start to finish. We wanted to cut out all that swiping, messaging back and forth, followed by bad first dates, and just allow users to see each other face to face at a really authentic human level and see if the two people vibe right off the bat." Filter Off schedules 90-second "blind" video dates for users. At the end of the 90 seconds, they can either do a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down. If both give each other a thumbs-up, they're entered into a match like every other dating app. At that point they can either send a video message or send a text message. Schleien believes that the social isolation and loneliness that has been a side effect of the COVID-19 crisis has encouraged more and more singles to try out video dating.

Posted on May 8, 2020

Pof logo 2019 higher resolutionPR NEWSWIRE – May 7 – Plenty of Fish released a new study, called Pressure Points: Dating from a Distance. The study explores the relationship between dating and anxiety, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how singles are leveraging technology to foster meaningful connections. While 7 in 10 singles report feeling more anxious than usual, 72% of online daters believe it is still possible to start a romantic relationship while social distancing, and over half say the situation has inspired them to take dating more seriously. 79% of singles will not date someone who doesn't take social distancing seriously. POF has recently introduced Live!, a new livestreaming feature, which enables people to date from a distance, and last year implemented a face filter ban to increase authenticity in dating. 1 in 5 users have used Live!.

Indian dating appsECONOMIC TIMES – May 7 – Startups like Floh, SirfCoffee, Aisle, MyScoot and FilterOff are offering virtual poetry and cookery sessions and speed dates online among other activities. These apps have seen a 20% increase in new users, mostly busy professionals. SirfCoffee has set up over 200 personalised virtual dates in the comfort of our members' homes,” said Naina Hiranandani, co-founder of SirfCoffee. "We now host weekly Zoom events on various relationship topics," says Siddharth Mangharam, founder and CEO of Floh. "We are looking at hosting only interactive activities online like brewing coffee without equipment. So, users with an interest in coffee will join the session," says Suyash Sinha, founder of MyScoot. Bengaluru-based Aisle, on the other hand, is hosting online group activities through Zoom. These activities include games like Pictionary. After the activity, users connect with other members. US-headquartered FilterOff permits users to have a 90-second video chat session with the selected dating partners, before proceeding with the virtual date.

How Coronavirus Is Changing the Dating Game for the Better

Posted on May 8, 2020

Well-datingNEW YORK TIMES – May 7 – According to Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist & Match.com's chief science adviser, coronavirus has given us a gift. The pandemic is changing the courtship process in some positive ways. It has slowed things down. This pandemic has forced singles to return to more traditional wooing: getting to know someone before the kissing starts. Video chats are in. During the second weekend of April, Match asked its 6K members how they've changed their courtship habits since the world shut down. Before Covid-19, only 6% of respondents were using video chatting. Now, 69% are open to it. Before this virus hit, some 34% of American singles had engaged in sex before an "official" first date. That's over – at least for now. Money is off the table, too. On an in-person date, singles must negotiate who pays. These money negotiations are history. With the coronavirus lockdowns, many of singles now have more time and more time to talk. Chitchat and small talk have become far less relevant. Singles are now likely to share far more meaningful thoughts of fear and hope. This virus is probably delaying matrimony, too. Another plus. The later you wed, the more likely you are to remain married. A study of ~3K married people in the US found that, compared with those who dated less than a year, couples who dated for one to two years before wedding were 20% less likely to divorce. Couples who dated for three or more years before marrying were 39% less likely to break up.
