The Meet Group Launches Live Video on Growlr

Growlr logoBUSINESSWIRE – May 7 – The Meet Group, a leading provider of interactive dating solutions, is launching live video on its gay dating app GROWLr. Additionally, in the midst of the pandemic, one-on-one video chat is now free for all GROWLr members. "Livestreaming allows people to make connections and remain socially distant," said Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group. Since the release of Live, 87% of surveyed GROWLr members said they feel they are able to connect with more people, and 90% have agreed that the feature provides them with a better way to meet and socialize with others during the pandemic. Beginning this week, GROWLr will host a variety of free live entertainment shows on its mobile app, welcoming musical artists, comedians, and more.

The Meet Group Reports Q1 2020 Financial Results: Revenue up 11%

Themetgroup logoBUSINESSWIRE – May 6 – Q1 2020 revenue was $55.1M, up 11% YOY. GAAP net loss was $2.4M, compared with GAAP net income of $1.3M in Q1 2019. Adjusted EBITDA was $7.9M, compared with $8.1M in the Q1 2019. Non-GAAP net income was $6.7M, compared with $7M in Q1 2019. Transaction with ProSiebenSat.1's and General Atlantic's joint company NuCom Group expected to close in the Q2 2020.

Match Stock Gains After Tinder Subscriber Trends Stabilized in April

Match group logo blue 2019MARKETWATCH – May 5 – Shares of Match were up 0.7% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company matched Q1 revenue expectations and said Tinder subscriber trends were "stabilizing" in April after dropping sequentially in March. Match generated net income of $160.4M, up from $123M in Q1 2019. The EBITDA was $171.5M, above the $155.1M it recorded a year prior. The company posted revenue of $545M, up from $465M in Q1 2019. Tinder subscribers averaged 6M in the quarter, compared with an average of 5.9M in the December quarter. Match saw the average number of daily messages sent across its products rise 27% in April relative to the last week of February. For users under the age of 30, the daily average message count was 35% higher.

Tinder to Launch in-App Video Chats Later This Year

Harassment and abuse could be difficult to screen for on video, as opposed to text-based messaging. But presumably, the team is either building its own offensive image detection system or looking to a third party to provide one.

Sam Altman Backs ‘Video-First’ Dating App Curtn

Curtn iconTECH CRUNCH – May 5 – A new dating app advised by Grindr founder Joel Simkhai and former YC chief Sam Altman is aiming to capitalize on the skyrocketing popularity of video chat. The new app, called Curtn, is pushing video as its differentiating factor, encouraging users to create short videos for their dating profiles and aiming to move conversations to video chat after users match. CEO Brenden Strauss and his co-founder and CTO, Benjamin Honig have some noteworthy advisors. For one, Strauss' boyfriend Joel Simkhai is the co-founder of Grindr and was one of his biggest inspirations for building out the app. Former YC president and current OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also serving as an advisor and is one of the startup's first investors. The team has raised ~$425K pre-seed round of investment to get the app ready to share with the world.
