Apple Will Let Dating Apps Offer Third-party Payment Options in the Netherlands

Posted on January 17, 2022

Apple logoTHE VERGE – This will allow dating apps – and only dating apps – distributed in the country to avoid Apple's 15 to 30% commission on in-app purchases. Dating app developers can either direct customers to a website to complete their purchase or add a third-party payment service within the app. However, if developers choose to snub Apple's payment service in favor of an alternative, Apple says it won't be able to help users with refunds, subscription management, or any payment issues. Apple has also appealed the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets' (ACM) decision. "Because we do not believe these orders are in our users' best interests, we have appealed the ACM's decision to a higher court," Apple explains. "We're concerned these changes could compromise the user experience, and create new threats to user privacy and data security. In the meantime, we are obligated to make the mandated changes which we're launching today and we will provide further information shortly."

Fixing Freemium’s Flaw

Posted on January 17, 2022

Dating app usersHARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW – A large-scale two year study (with Inner Circle) suggests that carefully managing the threshold for the number of referrals needed in order for referring customers to access the premium features can increase customers and generate more profitable ones. There's 8k+ dating sites in the world. In 2019, 39% of U.S. couples said they met online. In 2020 270m adults worldwide subscribed to a dating site, ~double 5 years ago. Most sites don't have a clear idea of how profitable referred customers are compared to the (originating) friends who invited them to join the site. The number of successful referrals users are required to make before they can access premium features (called the referral threshold) can have important effects on users' behavior. Referral-driven growth typically comes at a cost: as the number of referred users in the population grows, their collective level of engagement tends to fall. Raising the number of successful referrals needed to win free access to premium features did not have an impact on the relative activity of their converts. New members were as engaged as those invited by users in referral programs that had a lower threshold. Total revenue increased when we raised the number of successful referrals required for free access to the premium features. Adding additional referral requirements in exchange for premium features did not disincentivize some users. Tweaks could be dynamic: the platform could start by assigning a freemium plan to all users, and after assessing behavior, decide whom to give the option of joining its referrals-for-features program. Individuals value having their friends on the platform. Social referral programs designed to enhance the shared experience of online dating (for example, by organizing offline activities) could be particularly effective in increasing platform engagement.

Mark Brooks: This study was run by Professor Ting Li and Professor Rodrigo Belo, Rotterdam School of Management. Given that the only mutual contacts I have with them on Linkedin are with Inner Circle, I'm going to infer that this study was with Inner Circle. In short, it's worthwhile amping up your price and proposition testing. Time to hire a data scientist if you don't already have one, or perhaps open up to experiments by academics like this. See IDEA's Project 0d8 at 0d8.com, btw.

Meta Closes Video Speed-dating Service, Sparked

Posted on January 14, 2022

Sparked logoTECH CRUNCH – Meta (Facebook) is shutting down a video speed-dating service it tested out in 2021. Sparked daters cycle through short "video dates" during a preplanned event with locals in select markets, including Chicago. They also hosted several "global" date nights and events for LGBTQ, and certain demographics and age groups. Sparked users had 4-minute dates, with optional 10-minute dates, and contact info sharing. Sparked experimented with audio only dating. Facebook Dating, soon thereafter launched Audio Dates. Tuned, an app for couples, was made by the same team. The experimental app 'NPE Team' has offices in Lagos, Nigeria, and is staffing another in Asia. It's also planning to look externally for new ideas, and making seed investments.

Can Grindr Become More Than “Just a Hookup App”?

Posted on January 14, 2022

Grindr logo 2018MIC – Grindr was first introduced to the queer community in 2009 by a gay tech entrepreneur named Joel Simkhai, whose original intentions were to connect queer people with similar interests. Simkhai recognized that people would view Grindr as nothing more than a hookup app, but he had much higher hopes for it from the start. But the app's "only-for-hookups" stigma has stuck around and Grindr has been trying to shake it off ever since. It apparently didn't help when Simkhai sold the app to a Chinese Kunlun Tech in 2016. The new president, Scott Chen, viewed Grindr as a hookup app and simply focused on increasing the number of daily users rather than trying to improve it. One former employee said that for Chen, "anything that detracted from encouraging hookups was seen as a distraction." In March of 2020, Grindr was sold once again, this time to San Vicente Acquisition. The company has since pivoted back toward what Chen tried to move away from – including the relaunch of their digital publication, "INTO". Grindr users tapped into the app's unofficial housing market during the pandemic. Some people also use Grindr to further their careers.
