TECH CRUNCH – Tinder has launched a new "Relationship Goals" feature that allows users to display their dating goals on their profile, whether they're looking for a "long-term partner," "long-term, but open to short-term," "short-term, but open to long," "short-term fun," "new friends," or "still figuring it out." The app will also have new weekly check-in prompts to remind users that they can change their Relationship Goals. When testing "Relationship Goals," Tinder found that 50% of users opted to use the feature option on their profile. Hinge launched a similar feature earlier this year called "Dating Intentions," letting users display what they want in a relationship on their profile.

Apple Allowing Sideloading Has Some Benefits for Dating
SEEKING ALPHA – If Apple were to allow third-party app stores on iPhones and iPads, a process known as sideloading, it would only provide a "relatively immaterial" benefit to companies such as Bumble and Match Group, as Samsung's Galaxy App Store only has Tinder and no other major dating apps. "We estimate that even if MTCH/BMBL are able to get 3% sideloading penetration in the EU, it would only be a ~$2M/~1M benefit to FY23 EBITDA," said the analysts at Morgan Stanley. Shares of Bumble and Match Group soared initially after the report that Apple is considering allowing third-party app stores but eventually closed the Tuesday trading session with more modest gains.

Tinder Makes a Date With the Federal Court
ICLG – Tinder has been targeted by a class action in Illinois over how it stores its users' biometric data. The claim, which was initially filed in Oct and moved at the end of Nov to the federal court, is being made under Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), the same law which gave rise to two huge class-action settlements involving TikTok and Snapchat earlier this year. The lawsuit claims that the companies violated the BIPA by improperly scanning the faces of people who upload their photos to verify their identities for their profiles. Under the Act, companies must tell people that their information is being collected or stored, inform them about the purpose and time span of the collection, and obtain a written release indicating informed consent.

The Woman Who Made Online Dating Into a ‘Science’
THE ATLANTIC – Helen Fisher is an anthropologist and famed love expert. She is the chief scientific adviser for Match.com. She says personality is a cocktail of hormones; love comes from the buzz of mixing them just right. Dating apps can't possibly kill romance, even if they do show us so many options. "It's the same old brain," she says. "The brain hasn't changed in 300K years." She's famous for her science books, including "Why We Love: The Nature and Chemistry of Romantic Love", which," may have been the one that brought her to the attention of Match.com. The company was looking for insight – Why does anybody fall in love with one person and not another? She created four personality styles (Builders – high in serotonin, logical, and traditional; Explorers – high in dopamine, spontaneous and daring; Negotiators – high in estrogen, empathetic and imaginative, and Directors – high in testosterone, decisive and competitive.) Those categories became the basis for Chemistry.com. When it launched in 2005, Chemistry.com competed with eHarmony and PerfectMatch.com, based on the Myers-Briggs personality test. Users filled out a questionnaire written by Fisher and were assigned primary and secondary personality styles. According to Fisher's system, builders match well with other builders, explorers with explorers, and negotiators with directors. Taking the job with Match was "one of the smartest things I've ever done with my life," she said. "Fifteen million people have taken that questionnaire." (The questionnaire was used first for Chemistry.com, then for Match's flagship site.) Today, Fisher's role at Match has more to do with data analysis and public relations than designing dating products.

Bumble’s Cyberflashing Campaign Helped Ensure It Was Included in the Online Safety Bill
THE DRUM – Bumble's CyberFlashingIsFlashing campaign achieved its goal when it managed to get the UK government to agree to make cyber flashing a criminal offense in its proposed Online Safety Bill. Bumble made this happen by briefing 576 MPs across England and Wales and got its community to send ~7,500 letters to MPs, as well as securing a meeting with the former secretary of state, Nadine Dorries. During the campaign, Boris Johnson was even asked if he would bring forward legislation to criminalize cyber flashing – to which he said yes. On social, the #DigitalFlashingIsFlashing garnered 1M views and interactions. This campaign was a winner at The Drum Awards for PR 2022.
