Ending Subscriptions to Get Easier With New ‘Click-to-Cancel’ Rule

Posted on October 18, 2024

Click to cancelWALL STREET JOURNAL – On Wednesday, federal regulators mandated that businesses give consumers an easy way out – as simple as it was to sign up. The Federal Trade Commission voted to issue a "click-to-cancel" regulation. Businesses will have to offer a cancellation method that is easy to find. Consumers can't be required to interact with a rep., unless they consented to that step when they initiated the subscription. The final rule scaled back some elements of its proposal, including a requirement that sellers provide annual reminders to consumers about automatic renewals.

Mark Brooks: Making it easy to cancel helps improve the likelihood of reorders when dating users consider which dating app to use again. Reminding users before quarterly, semi-annual or annual recurring memberships decreases the chances of complaints and chargebacks.  Both are just general good practice in the dating industry for keeping positive word-of-mouth and brand sentiment for your app, and the industry at large.

Bumble Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Discrimination Against Straight Women

Posted on October 18, 2024

BumbleTOP CLASS ACTIONS – A class action lawsuit has been filed against Bumble by plaintiffs Christine Johnson and Diane Foster, claiming the app's "first move" feature discriminates against straight women. The feature requires women to initiate contact with men they match with, which the plaintiffs argue denies them the option to be pursued. They claim the policy is based on stereotypes about women needing protection from men, disempowering heterosexual women by taking away their choices. The lawsuit, filed in California, alleges the feature violates the state's Unruh Civil Rights Act.

The magazine features contributions from prominent writers and aims to offer creative, thoughtful content. While tech companies often use such publications for marketing, AFM is seen as both a cultural venture and an ad for Feeld. The magazine doesn't plan to generate revenue directly, but its creators hope it will help revitalize the dating experience by offering a fresh perspective on modern relationships.

UK Regulators Ban Seeking.com Ad for Promoting Sexist Gender Stereotypes

Posted on October 17, 2024

Seeking logo 2022 for social mediaUKTN – A dating ad by Seeking.com has been banned by UK regulators for promoting "sexist and negative gender stereotypes." The ad, posted on Reddit, featured an older man discarding a woman's photo in favor of four young women in bikinis, accompanied by the text "Be the catch" and claims of a 4:1 women-to-men ratio. Complaints were filed with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which ruled the ad perpetuated harmful stereotypes, suggesting women's value lies in their youth and attractiveness. Seeking.com defended the ad as humorous but agreed to remove it and comply with the ASA's guidelines against sexist content.

Dating Apps Introduce Political Features Ahead of Upcoming Election

Posted on October 17, 2024

The Right Stuff logoCNN – Dating apps increasingly incorporate political features ahead of the upcoming election, recognizing that politics plays a crucial role in modern dating. Tinder introduced a "Take Action Center," offering voting-related stickers and resources in partnership with Vote.org. OkCupid added new questions focused on voter behavior to help users find compatible matches. Users prioritize political compatibility, with many viewing political differences as deal breakers. Meanwhile, The Right Stuff, a conservative dating app, focuses on aligning users with shared values without explicitly being overtly political.

Younger Daters Are Tired of Swiping

Posted on October 14, 2024

FROMLOS ANGELES TIMES – Younger users are growing tired of traditional dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, leading to a shift in the online dating market. Startups in Los Angeles are offering alternatives that focus more on in-person connections and less on swiping. Apps like "First Round's on Me" encourage real-life meetups, while others, like Lox Club and Feeld, host social events to foster deeper connections. Gen Z is moving away from swipe-based models, preferring more intentional dating experiences. Although the major apps remain dominant, they face slowing growth, with Tinder and Bumble seeing declines in user engagement and revenue. Smaller, niche apps are emerging but often struggle to scale, with the likelihood of being bought out by larger companies. The industry remains profitable but stagnant, with innovation needed to reignite growth.
