Grindr Shielded From Rape Lawsuit by U.S. Appeals Court

Posted on February 19, 2025

Grindr logoREUTERS – A U.S. federal appeals court ruled that Grindr is not liable for matching a 15-year-old user with four adult men who raped him. The 9th Circuit upheld that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects the platform from liability over user content. The victim, who misrepresented his age, sued for negligence and failure to warn about risks. Three attackers were imprisoned, while one remains at large. The court found Grindr's features "content neutral" and rejected claims of active sex trafficking. The victim's lawyer criticized the ruling, hoping for a Supreme Court review.

Aisle’s #FindAnkit Campaign Goes Viral

Posted on February 19, 2025
Aisle's #FindAnkit Campaign

SOCIAL SAMOSA – Aisle’s #FindAnkit campaign was a viral marketing stunt that turned a common dating app regret – accidentally skipping a profile – into an engaging social media movement. It started when a woman mistakenly swiped past a profile she thought was a perfect match. Aisle turned this into a fun, city-wide search for “Ankit,” a fictional 5’11” techie from Bengaluru who loves chai. The campaign reached 8.8M people and gained 9.8M views.

Silicon Valley’s New Matchmakers Are Betting on AI to Fix What Dating Apps Broke

Posted on February 18, 2025
Stitched Social launch event

TIMES OF INDIA – Less than 1% of swipes lead to dates. 17% of 1st dates on Hinge result in a second. San Francisco’s Stitched Social has an AI system which integrates real-time feedback and reinforcement learning to refine matches continuously and charges for successful matches.

Mark Brooks: AI will transform online dating, for sure. I’d argue that 1% of swipes turning into dates, with 17% of 1st dates leading to 2nd dates, is pretty good. I wish journalists would stop clouding the dating industry with glass half-full candor. The truth is we’re doing well but can do better, with AI tech.

Hinge CEO Rejects AI Replacing Human Connection in Dating

Hinge CEO Rejects AI Replacing Human Connection in Dating

BUSINESS INSIDER – Hinge CEO Justin McLeod dismissed the idea of AI dating on behalf of users, emphasizing that dating is a personal journey that individuals must experience themselves. While apps like Grindr and Bumble are exploring AI-powered dating assistants, McLeod stated that Hinge believes AI should support users rather than act as an intermediary. He also noted that current technology is not advanced enough to accurately replicate a person’s voice, values, and personality. Instead, Hinge plans to introduce features that guide users with conversation tips.

BUSINESS INSIDER – New dating apps are emerging as users grow tired of swiping, challenging industry giants like Tinder and Bumble. Startups are experimenting with alternatives, such as AI-powered matchmaking (Sitch), daily limited profile selections (Pique Dating), and in-person dating events. Some social networking apps like 222 and Posh also foster organic connections that can lead to romance. Even Big Tech, including Facebook and Instagram, is expanding its dating features. With Gen Z prioritizing broader social connections, the online dating landscape is evolving beyond traditional swipe-based models.

AshleyMadison Netflix documentaryFORTUNE INDIA – Netflix and Hulu documentaries have fueled a surge in Ashley Madison's popularity in India, pushing the country from the eighth to the sixth spot globally in new signups. Despite the platform's controversial history, including a massive 2015 data breach, its membership has now grown to 85M users worldwide, with 1.4M signups from India as of December. Chief Strategy Officer Paul Keable attributes this rise to increased exposure from streaming platforms, noting a 20-30% jump in global signups following the Netflix series.
