A Debate: Is It Time to Break up With Dating Apps?

Posted on February 17, 2025

OPW – In a debate moderated by journalist Nayeema Raza, matchmaker Maria Avgitidis (CEO of Agape Match) and Melissa Hobley (Global CMO of Tinder) discussed whether dating apps are more of a hindrance than a help.

Maria argued that dating apps have gamified romance, leading to exhaustion, indecision, and a paradox of choice. She claimed users are more focused on superficial traits, like height, and are getting dopamine hits rather than real relationships. She pointed to Gen Z’s declining interest in dating apps as proof that people are looking for more authentic ways to connect.

Melissa countered that dating apps remain the most effective way to meet a partner, citing research showing that half of relationships and 70-80% of LGBTQ+ relationships start online. She acknowledged that dating is hard but emphasized that apps like Tinder provide accessibility, control, and opportunities that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Melissa highlighted Tinder’s role in promoting social change, such as advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.

Both agreed dating apps aren’t disappearing but need to improve. Maria urged users to be more intentional, arguing that past generations built lasting connections without endless swiping. Melissa defended apps as essential, especially for marginalized groups, citing Tinder’s role in LGBTQ+ rights and a rise in interracial relationships.

AI-Driven Romance Scams Surge as Deepfakes Flood Dating Apps

Posted on February 14, 2025

AI-Driven Romance Scams Surge as Deepfakes Flood Dating AppsGLAMOUR – According to a new study, 75% of UK dating app users have encountered deepfake profiles. Earlier this year, a French woman went viral after being duped out of £700K by scammers who led her to believe she was in a romantic relationship with Brad Pitt. The technology is so advanced that perpetrators can create entirely original images. Deepfake images are unidentifiable by reverse image search, which is normally a good technique for detecting fraudsters. It's the dating apps that need to do more of the heavy lifting. Right now, fake profiles are being created in minutes, and it's left to those affected to seek out the truth or disprove the lie. Often, even if profiles are reported, the profiles remain live, allowing those behind the accounts to continue to deceive people for whatever purpose they choose.

Dating Apps Losing Users as Young People Find Love in Online Communities

Tinder lost 594K users, Bumble dropped by 368K, and Hinge declined by 131K in the UK, according to Ofcom's 2024 report. A 2023 US survey found 79% of Gen Z were using dating apps less frequently. Instead, platforms like Strava (135M users, 20% growth) and Letterboxd (50% growth) are becoming spaces where people naturally form connections. On Strava, 1 in 5 Gen Z users have gone on a date through fitness clubs.

Matchmaking TV show

LOS ANGELES TIMES – Smriti Mundhra, the executive producer of the Netflix show “Indian Matchmaking,” has spearheaded another matchmaking series focusing on the Muslim American community. Patti Novak and Patti Stanger pioneered the matchmaker series in “Confessions of a Matchmaker” in 2007, and Stanger was “The Millionaire Matchmaker” in 2008, running for 8 seasons. In April 2024, Stanger appeared in a new series, “Patti Stanger: The Matchmaker.” Adam Cohen-Aslatei, the CEO of Three Day Rule, said the shows dive into relationships and dating and teach viewers how to approach their dating lives in a more productive way. Lox Club is a “members club for Jewish people with ridiculously high standards,” joined the matchmaking space in May 2024. Stanger said since COVID she noticed a shift in more women turning to matchmaking services, which used to be solicited primarily by men. She added that her business is “on fire” right now. Stanger’s packages start at $50k, and Three Day Rule starts at $5,900.
