Usage of Top Dating Apps Grew 20% YoY in January

Posted on February 11, 2022

Tinder Bumble HingeIANS – The monthly active users of Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge collectively grew 17% in January 2022, when compared to January 2019, globally. According to Sensor Tower, Tinder has maintained its majority market share among top dating apps in the US for the last five years. From January 2019 through January 2022, Bumble and Hinge's monthly active users reached a fraction of Tinder's, however, their user bases have grown over that time.

Bumble’s First Acquisition Raises 3 Red Flags

Posted on February 11, 2022

Fruitz and Bumble logosTHE MOTLEY FOOL – Bumble recently agreed to buy Fruitz, a French dating app that lets its users express their intentions with four fruit-based metaphors: cherries, grapes, watermelons, and peaches. On the surface, Bumble's acquisition makes sense. It only operates two main apps, Bumble and Badoo. However, the deal also raises three red flags about Bumble that can't be ignored.

  1. Bumble needed to buy more growth
Bumble ended Q3 of 2021 with 2.89M paying users across its two main apps, which represented 5% YOY growth. By comparison, Match's paying users rose 16% YOY to 16.3M.
  2. Fruitz probably won't add many paid users
Fruitz has been downloaded ~5.6M times globally for iOS and Android devices, according to Sensor Tower. And we don't know how many paid users it actually has.
  3. Selling Badoo makes more sense
Bumble generated more than twice as much average revenue per paying user than Badoo. Instead of acquiring another European-oriented app to offset Badoo's slowdown, it would have arguably made more sense to sell Badoo and reinvest that cash into Bumble's overseas expansion.

Bumble Acquires French Gen Z Dating App, Fruitz

Posted on February 7, 2022

Fruitz iconTECH CRUNCH – Bumble is adding the fast-growing French dating app Fruitz to its family of apps. Deal terms were not being disclosed. The quirky app Fruitz assigns a fruit to each particular kind of relationship type, ranging from those who want long-term commitments to those in search of one-night action. This allows users to filter out those who aren't on the same page as them. It also prompts users to answer questions that serve ice breakers before messaging their match. Fruitz was co-founded by Julian Kabab (CEO), Fabrice Bascoulergue (CTO), and Arnaud Ruols (CFO) and initially launched in France in Feb, 2017. To date, Fruitz has been downloaded 5.6M times globally across the App Store and Google Play, according to Sensor Tower. As of Feb. 3, 2022, the app was ranked No. 4 on the iPhone's top free charts in the "Lifestyle" category in its home market of France.

Bumble Hid Drop in Paying Daters Before Offering, Investors Say

Posted on January 27, 2022

Bumble logo 2020BLOOMBERG LAW – Bumble misled investors about the loss of paying dating app users ahead of its Sep 2021 secondary public offering, a new suit alleges in federal court in New York. The company didn't disclose how its "previous favorable paying user growth trend had abruptly reversed" in the fiscal quarter leading up to the Sept. 10 offering. Bumble had lost tens of thousands of paying users during Q3 2021. Paying users had been more reluctant to sign up for the Bumble app during the quarter because of the recent price hike for paid services.

How Dating Apps Are Countering ‘FODA’ This Covid-19 Christmas

Posted on December 27, 2021

Dating generalFORBES – "With the vaccines and other changes in the pandemic, people want to get back out there and date," said Logan Ury, director of relationship science at Hinge, citing her research into 2021 dating trends. "But we also understood that more than half of singles have FODA." "FODA," Ury explained, "is fear of dating again." "People need love. People need connection," said Wolfe Herd in her CNBC interview. "That does not go away, irrespective of the changing landscape of this pandemic so our business remains largely unaffected during this new wave." Bumble adapted during the pandemic using video and voice. Hinge has adopted this tech, too, but not with a nod to its competition. Its team said they found inspiration in Clubhouse and added voice to users' profiles.

Bumble CEO Says the App Remains Unaffected by Omicron

Posted on December 15, 2021

Bumble Whitney Wolfe Herd 2021 2CNBC – Wolfe Herd said the dating app's business has remained "largely unaffected" despite increased worry around the omicron variant. "Demand does not change with different restrictions. People need love. People need connection," she said. Wolfe Herd said Bumble users lean on the dating app's features in different ways depending on the public-health situation around them. "We have opportunities on both sides of the coin," she said. If a user lives in an area where social activities are restricted, Wolfe Herd said that's where Bumble's "Night In" trivia game comes into play.

Dating Trends Experts Are Predicting for 2022

Posted on December 13, 2021

Dating apps12BUSTLE – It's been hard to separate the pandemic and dating over the last couple of years. However, some of the biggest dating apps have big predictions for 2022. "If 2020 was the year of reflection, 2021 has been a year of discovery and we expect to see that continue into the new year," said Naomi Walkland, Head of Bumble UK and Ireland.

Top UK Dating Trends
In 2022 Pre-first date video calls became the norm. The Inner Circle has said that this is one way that app users can work out if they have a connection with someone. Experts at Dating.com agreed, arguing that audio and video dating will redefine how we date in 2022, with 90% of users saying they plan on doing it in the new year. And Tinder said that video dates have been mentioned 52% more times in people's dating profiles. Being vaccinated (or not) will continue to play a big role in dating in 2022. While 2021 may have been the year of hardballing, 2022 is going to be the year where daters hold nothing back. OKCupid has identified a 17% increase in BDSM terms in users profiles and there's been a 125% increase in users saying they wanted children.
